this song makes me feel it all. Everything blossoms once I listen to this and feel the lyrics, the melodies, everything in my soul, it makes me feel so magical, yet so sad and confused. It's beautiful and shocking how one human can make someone feel so much with a simple song. I relate this with my mother, how our relationship fell once, but we are much better, it never made me feel so seen and beautiful before, but now it does. And I thank mitski for writing this beautiful flower of a song.

i thought it was about being in a relationship with someone who you know is going to let you down, specifically cheating on you. “tell your baby that i’m your baby” - tell the person you’re cheating on me with that you’re dating me “i bet on losing dogs” - for context, i assume this is a reference to wrestling, though i don’t know much about wrestling so this is an assumption lol. the “losing dog” is the person who she knows is going to cheat on her but she keeps putting her faith into them, i.e. “i bet”. “i know they’re losing and i pay for my place by the ring, where i’ll be looking in their eyes when they’re down” - this continues the wrestling metaphor. she knows they’re going to cheat on her/are cheating on her (“i know they’re losing”) and are going to break her heart (“pay for my place”), but she holds on anyway. “i’ll be looking in their eyes when they’re down” is, to me, about the moment where the person confronts her about their “loss,” i.e. the fact that they cheated, and she has to deal with this knowledge. i believe the lines “i wanna feel it” and “how you’d be over me looking in my eyes when i c*m” shows that this relationship isn’t made of mutual love. it’s already been established (by my interpretation) that the person she’s with cheats on her, and these lines show she only stays in the relationship bc she believes it will make her feel something, and feeling anything, even if it’s not a genuine attraction, feels better than feeling nothing. music is fluid and this is just my interpretation! i hope it helps :D

oh yeah “i pay for my place” has a double meaning, the first being literal and following the wrestling metaphor of how people bet (like with money) on who they think will win a match, aka her staying in a relationship with this person, and the second being having to deal with the consequences of her decision.

I see it as a motherly figure helping a “losing dog”- a child of theirs. As if the child is drifting away she wishes them to be her baby again. The child is going through a hard time but the mother still bets on her “losing dog”.
