i think a lot of people are misunderstanding the sad girl thing. she doesn‘t want us/herself to not feel sadness anymore, she just doesn‘t want to be defined by that as an artist since her work shows many nuanced emotions that go beyond sadness.

@@Sapphire1982 i dont think she is, she even laughed at the other depressed jokes the sad girl theme was often used to romantize being a sad girl pretty pics of crying girls and cringe depressing quotes went along with it in the past years and its good that thats over, it was a way for girls to talk about their feelings online and be understood but overall it never really helped anyone but rather ended in romantizing being sad and not wanting to get out of it im not sure whether this is exactly what she was referring to, but yea the sad girl thing is over and i hope it never comes up again mental health talks on the internet are a lot better now sry this got longer than it shouldve been lol

That's all I'm saying. I get your point though. Kind of dumb to romanticize being sad at least without discussion or effort to get better but hey I also understand feeling as it there is something wrong with you & it'll never get better. @@Sapphire1982 i totally agree the line between romantizing and being relatable is extremely thin and i don't think you can always classify something as bad bc it romantizes a bad thing, it's art after all mitski does do it sometimes and i love those kinds of songs tbh sometimes you don't want someone to tell you it gets better but feel understood from the complete opposite the sad girl thing itself was a whole movement tho it has existed for ages and even Shakespeare had pretty looking crying sad girls in tumblrs high years it often also came with a lot of privilege, since this whole aesthetic mainly centered around cishet white middle class women (not that those don't have problems but yk it wasn't exactly inclusive) what was seriously problematic is how these communitys held each other down and back from getting better while in today's internet and for example the mitski fandom it's ppl talking abt their trauma, mental illness or other issues with self awareness and normally a lot of actual information involved (a lot of these people also go to therapy and share that online) it's way less toxic then groups of sad girls were back then way more unaware and uneducated and sometimes it seemed like they weren't supposed to get better or find help since that would alienate them from this online community sorryyy this got kinda long i just thought abt this a few days ago and watched some videos on it lol

Another thing i wanted to add is that a lot of her music is about being a woc in the US and the struggles that come with that (most apparent in songs like your best American girl). Diminishing her lyrics to just being about sadness/depression is kind of disrespectful to her experiences. Not to say you can’t empathize with her just because you’re white but there are layers to her songs that go beyond the sad girl thing.

I agree that people reduce Mitski to a Sad Girl, some sort of unhinged feral beast that vomits emotion onto a page, while giving her zero credit as an artist. Howeverrr I think people like Jasmine are just teenagers who haven't yet aged out of making suffering part of their identity (as a way to cope), which is ok. Like most people have at some point tried to view their issues as something interesting about them rather than something difficult they can and should try to work through, because it's very hard to do that and it takes time to get to a point where you can accept that growth is possible :(

i would say the opposite, there are people out there who cling to this sadness as a way for comfort, but mitski's work has been repeatedly framed as this "sad girl shit" that refuses to acknowledge the diversity and complexity of her songs over and over again. and this reductive view also puts her in this position of a confidant who just channels her suffering into lyrics with no creativity or active participation involved, and she has talked about how tired of that she is for years now
