Honestly he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would want to do that. Every time he talks about going to a densely populated city his experience is always being uncomfortable. Japan would be sensory overload.

That fixed rear mirror is so you can see how close you are when parking (and if there's anyone short standing behind the car, presumably.) The rear is high enough that most objects will disappear from view long before you actually get close, so this way the area up close to your bumper is still visible. I'm pretty sure the sunroof panels don't open. Those shades are supposed to be motorized, however - I'm guessing that's what is busted.

It's one of those Japanese oddities, which includes stuff like the 3rd side mirror for SUVs, and column shifters + bench seats for smaller cars so the driver can exit via the passenger door. Parking is tight in Japan.

Those things are all over the place here in Okinawa Japan. Command a high premium because the backseat can fold up and you can put a lot of crap in the back. There also versatile for going on the beaches and the higher mountain terrain’s here in Okinawa. We have had similar Mitsubishi and Mazda vans at our TV station, and we have used them for over 20 years. They were thrashed, bashed, and each had almost over 2 million miles on the clock, yet when time has finally come for company to sell them, it was hard to part ways with them- they were almost tank reliable. I have seen one of our old company Mitsubishi vans recently- new owner has put some work into sorting out the rusted bodywork and some tinkering around the engine and suspension- i swear it runs like new.

We have tons of these here on the south cost of BC, canada. Fun fact is the 4D56 diesel engine offered in that delica is actually a newer version of the 4D55 diesel engines offered in ford rangers, and dodge ram 50s of the mid-1980s. All rubber band timing set with silent shafts.

I got memories in that same gen Delica. Driving through Mabalacat with my native cousins cruising at 30 mph surrounded by anxious 100-200cc motorcycle riders weaving in and out of traffic. We always had the side door open when the a/c didn't want to work, risking the possibility of falling out with the insane amount of body roll through old cement roundabouts. Workhorse and Bulletproof were good names for that wagon and I knew it even as a kid, but I still laughed a little when I saw the big "Delica" and joked about telling Toyota about this. I remember desperately driving around the city for 45 minutes looking for contact solution, getting denials and "down the streets," ultimately finding a bottle 7 shops later. The maze of a city humbled me. I remember my family and I wearing nice clothes as we parked in the church lot for my cousin's wedding. "I haven't seen you since..." was the phrase of that day. We arrived with 5 and left with 9 as we drove to the reception, shoulder to shoulder with loud laughs and life updates. Thank you, Delica.

These were very funny vehicles. I used to drive the German Version of it called the L300. Driving was horrible. Sitting in front of the axle it steered very strange and the jumpy suspension made you feel like it always wanted to throw you out of the front window. It always overheated and the cabin was terrible hot with the engine between the seats. Not to mention it was loud as anything and you had a feeling of speeding whenever you drove faster than 80 km/h. The non 4x4 Versions (which as far as I remember were pased on the old Pajero/Montero platform) had a very weird shifter, which was attached to the steering column and you really really had to throw the gears in. Even though the one I had was probably only serviced once in 160k km, it never let us down. We drove it overheating, toped it of with too much oil and were even rear ended by a Clio (which was totaled with all airbags deployed) and it still drove. Since this vehicles are popular in Africa, it went away after 30 Minutes standing on a Parking lot for a very decent price. Propably still driving in Africa.

That Panasonic box is for electronic tolls in Japan, a prepaid card goes in it so you don’t have to pay for toll every time you go on highway, whenever the car passes through e-toll gate the Fare is charged from the prepaid card and when you’re low on credit it beeps so you put in a new card. Exceed used to be trim level for highest trim (late 80s 90s) of Mitsubishi’s of that era

The Delica "de-li-ca" was originally developed as a delivery wagon, thus Deilvery Car = DeliCa. They are known for their lack of reliability and fuel inefficiency... but they do look pretty cool. The current generation D5 hasn't been updated in like 10 years other than trim. Exceed is the trim level. Mirror on the back is a parking mirror. The rear of the car extends far enough from the rear wheels that it will hang over parking blocks enough to hit polls or walls behind you before your wheels touch the blocks. Land Cruisers have an electric mirror that unfolds when you put the car in reverse! The offset steering wheel is extremely common in Mitsubishi vehicles and is a common complaint. That steering wheel is cheap aftermarket garbage, the original wheel is dinky rubberized plastic thing. Those switches are supposed to reel the shades in or out. The Panasonic box is an aftermarket ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) unit. There's a little antenna node on the dash or stuck to the window and you put in an ETC IC card into the slot. ETC cards are usually tied to your credit card account, and you can get an ETC card when you apply for a credit card. The rear windows do not pop out, but newer models don't have these because they are stupid easy to break into (open them with a flat head screwdriver, gently unscrew the latch attachment on the window, reach in and loosen up the latches on the inside and pull the window out). I had them on my Hilux Surf and didn't even notice them until one day I found one was pried open (no damage mind you).

Love these vans, I own an 86 Toyota Van and it’s similar to these. Mid engine, rwd, 5 speed. The seats in the back fold down and make a bed. Shaggin wagon for sure!

The shape reminds me of the early Toyota vans that had 4WD. Guy I worked with had three of them--made the money, but REFUSED to buy anything else but these types of vans. He used them at Outer Banks and Daytona Beach. Loved those things, he did.

Doubt it. Bruce Henn's is about 2 hours away from Philly, and philly has a pretty well equipped and well known Delica Dealer.

Ahhh the Delica Star Wagon. Used to see these all the time back when I lived overseas. Very popular as shuttles in most Asian countries in the 1980s and 1990s.

When I was installing trailer hitches for Uhaul one of these pulled up. Which was a great job for getting to drive all sorts of different vehicles. I was elated at the thought of getting behind the wheel. Then he requested that he drives it into the shop and then after looking at what needed to be done he decided to not get a hitch after all. It was cool to look at though!

Reminds me very much of the '90 Nissan Vanette, my friend's parents used to have when I was a child. Very similar design but without the offroad-stuff.

The mirror mounted on the back is for seeing where your bumper is when you're backing into a parking spot. In Japan, most people back in to spots as space is so limited.

The Panasonic box is an ETC card reader. It stands for electronic toll collection. Basically that box blasts a signal to a sensor at the toll gate and opens the gate so you don't have to slow down. Works like a cash card where you have to top up the ETC card to pay for tolls.
