Keep in mind that Kei-class vehicles were primarily designed for Japanese city streets; unlike North America, Japan has a very high overall population density; almost 10 times over the average across the entirety of the United States. They are brilliant at what they do best. Designed for crowded Japanese cities. My ex wife used to have a fleet of 5 for urban deliveries in English villages & towns, some of the streets date back to medieval lanes meant for a pony & cart where a Ford Transit would struggle or even not pass at all. Any American that has been to old English towns will understand. As for speed, the average speed of inner London traffic is barely more than horse & cart days.

I got it sideways on a dirt road once by accident and I swear it was going to roll, but everything was fine. It’s also pretty fun to drive at low speeds because you can fit through anywhere, turn on a dime, parking is never an issue, and you’re constantly shifting gears with a super marshmallow clutch (at least on mine).

It just hit me that I see these on the high way all the time and I didn't realize they were so weak. "Kay", surely? I dunno about the smug smile thing you get in the states, but borrowing a Daihatsu equivalent for a while was certainly a fun, smile inducing experience. So long as you kept it under 65, where it developed a terrifying shimmy. The crazy seating position actually gives you a good view around in traffic, it turns like nothing else at low speed which lets you pull scary lateral G on city streets, the midengine design and fairly light upper body on top of a low-ride chassis means it's actually got a low centre of gravity and despite the worrying amount of roll you have to try really hard to get it to tip over... the mini-like wheel-at-each-corner design helps keep it planted as well. Though I dunno if I'd have been so gung ho if it was loaded up with cargo... using it as a commuter hack felt rather like cheating.

I'm going to probably sound incredibly stupid, but wouldn't sucking air up through a down facing radiator also suck in dirt, debris, water, etc? Shouldn't the fan be blowing down instead?

+PUU-TAAH Nin Nin It's def kay, not key. This is the first time Mr. Reg has annoyed me.
@1MotoXRacer18 жыл бұрын
+PUU-TAAH Nin Nin It is more like "kay", yes. But it's just the accents and how you pronounce spellings. Someone who speaks English will say "key", and someone who is Japanese or a related language will say "kay". They're both acceptable. Hyundai is pronounced "Hoo-n-d-ie" in Korea, but English say all sorts of weird amalgamations of "Hi" "un" "yun" "die". And that's fine.

There were alot of those cars driving around in Switzerland in the 90s and 2000s. Especially Subarus. Gotta deliver those croissants in the snow, AWD son.

I had one of these in the late 1990s when I lived in Japan. Great car but boy was it gutless. With 4 passengers, it could barely go up steep hills. It had a huge interior and handled pretty well.

Dat Daihatsu Mini-Truk. Mmmmmm.. I don't know what it's like in the rest of the country, but around where I'm at in the back-asswards rural everything that is the corners where Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana meet the place is Lousy with grey-import Daihatsu Mini-trucks Exactly. Like. That one. Why? Because Jeeps and Tacomas have gotten too big and too expensive to go bouncing across the pasture doing farm-work during the week and then go bouncing through the woods Huntin' during the weekend, and side-by-side ATVs and UTVs are too Not-Road-Legal to replace them.

It's pronounced like the letter K. Not key. I drove a daihatsu atrai for about three years that is the same thing. It had a 550cc triple engine with intercooler and turbocharger, and 4WD. It was a great little car. My neighbor has a suzuki jimny that looks like a jeep, and it has a 550cc two stroke triple engine. It even sounds like an old suzuki water buffalo.

I don't know what Pennsylvania dads are like, but over here in the midwest I genuinely can't comprehend someone getting any sort of aggressive or angry at you for driving something weird. Then again, I've never rolled up next to a DUSENBURG MEET in a JDM van from the 80s
@s502018 жыл бұрын
Too bad the Japanese safety standards on this thing is practically nonexistent. Less safe than a 90's Miata. The thing's basically a cardboard box. I wouldn't be driving this thing more than 25 mph since you're bound to lose your legs /w that lack of crush zone. No side impact protection either. Edit -fixed typos
@SquallyZ068 жыл бұрын
+s50201 I would love one of these if I had some land and needed to haul stuff around said land. Otherwise I'd keep it off the road. I've seen them fold like a pancake in accidents when I was living in Japan. Speed limits are slow over there so I couldn't imagine getting into an accident at US speeds with large vehicles. Death trap on wheels!
