ECLIPSE. The most underrated tuner car of all time. Responsible for setting off the US tuner scene and immortalized by The Fast and The Furious franchise, the Eclipse has seen it all. See how it all began with James Pumphrey; as he explains the origins behind the DSM name, the partnership with Chrysler that gave rise to the Eclipse, and it’s influence on car culture as a whole.
“I see a cold air intake, it’s got a NOS fogger system, the T4 turbo Dominic, I see an AIC controller, it has direct port nitrous injection…” “Yeah and a stand alone fuel management system...not a bad way to spend ten thousand dollars”

Ive got a 1991 Mitsubishi eclipse, its been an amazing little car. Ive owned it for about 9 going on 10 years now. It was my first car when I turned 16. I received the Eclipse from my uncle who was just wanting to get rid of it due to the timing being off and was just tired to dealing with it sooo.. i got it.. lol Thing was sitting under a tree covered in bird crap and was just a sad little car.. LOL I knew nothing about DSMs at the time. Long story short. He helped me get her running once i got the brand new timing parts and the rest is history. Grandfather (R.I.P) who was on his death bed gave me his remaining money to help me buy the new parts.. So you can imagine the attachment to this car. Restored the whole car from top to bottom with custom paint and body work. Looked like it came right off the show room floor. Sadly how ever.. i wrecked it back in October of 2016 due to a truck not having tail lights... Sad day.. but all was not lost! Got a new core support and put her back together once again and is now on the roads once more. Just gotta save up the money to get her painted again. Awesome vid. Made me even more proud of my DSM!

Thank you James, Thanks For Representing the DSM community. 17 years for me working on and driving the balls off these cars, 4G63 is a old technology engine but the best low budget 4 cylinder ever made. Stock long blocks capable of 500hp on 30-45psi of boost, if that not impressive i'dk what is. As of right now I have 2 DSMs and 1 hatchback Mirage GT with a 4g63 swap, I love these cars and will never trade them for nothing. When I was a child my first entrance to NFS was Carbono, there it was the Mitsubishi Eclipse, I love it the shape and the sound of that car, tunned the hell of it and finished the entire game with it. Didn’t care of the Gallardo, the Challenger, the Murcielago. I was just happy to go out on the Eclipse. After that I didn’t understand why there wasn’t many eclipses in my town but when I saw one in the street I used to stop walking and just admire that beautiful car (for me at least). It might not be the “best” car on the world, but I can say it was the first car which I fell in love.

I owned a 1991 Eagle Talon TSI AWD 5 speed manual, the engine and boost with a BIG 16G Turbo was AMAZING! Especially with my full 3" exhaust and hollowed cat! God damn, I wish I had looked into the car before I bought it though, the first owner literally blew the shit out of it! When I got her, there was a HOLE in the stock 14B Turbo! The camshaft had skipped 2 or 3 teeth and I had to get a top end rebuild - at least I got 1mm Oversized Valves, Titanium Valve springs - and the accompanying upgrades to the valve covers. My Mechanic was AMAZING! And he was VERY cheap! I bought my Turbo for ~$700, he only charged me about $500 to install - AND TUNE MY ECU for a better fuel map (he already had the ECU flash ready, as he owned 6 of the DSM Turbo Trio himself!) He also ran BIG 16G Turbos (EVO 3 stock turbo) on 3 of his own cars - so he knew it all so well. Anyway, eventually after draining my savings on things like a new Alternator, Steering Pump, Fuel Pump - and much more - the Head Gasket blew and cracked one of the cooling jackets a little - not enough to leak a lot immediately, but enough that it WOULD have failed, and I did not have the $5500 or more it would have cost - about $4000 or more was in parts alone... So I HAD to sell her off on eBay as a Parts Car, I only got $3000 for it - and I sunk basically $10,000 into it. See I thought I was safe because it was low-ish miles when I bought it at just below 60,000.... God I wish I still had that car, I was EASILY putting down about ~300+ HP with 93 Octane and 25 PSI of boost! When she ran as she was supposed to, she was the MOST FUN I HAVE EVER HAD IN ANY CAR! And I have driven a LOT (worked at an Auto Auction, and had friends with fast cars!)

Because your average car buyer doesn't watch Donut, they don't care about horsepower and torque, they don't give a rat's ass about handling, and they're functionally retarded when it comes to their vehicle. They want one vehicle that can do it all and don't care if it drives like crap.... hence the return of the station wagon with a new name and a slight lift to kinda hint at enhanced capabilities and automakers falling all over themselves to besmirch classic nameplates like Eclipse, Mustang, and Blazer to make little shitboxes that suck all the soul and fun from driving only to replace it with Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone integration. The popularity of Crossovers is mainly due to the fact that automakers know they can still cash in on crappy designs because everyone still thinks they'll have to haul some mythical and mysterious STUFF in the back of their vehicle so they want more cargo room, folks believe that someday they'll hit the Appalachian trail or they'll just have to go somewhere in the snow so they want All Wheel Drive, and you better believe you just have to have world beating efficiency for that cross country trip you'll never take cause gas stations is scarce in death valley, but wait there's more Dude you gotta have your Apple Auto and Android Car play compatibility to get your crappy trap beat mumble rap tunes everywhere you go so we added Bluetooth, usb, and aux to your car.

My dad took me to a launch screening of Fast and Furious in his dodge van. He bought a 91 2 door accord, put it on 5 spoke tsws, lowering springs and a magnaflow exhaust. Bought my mom a 4 door too a week later. 20 years later, crazy to look back how a movie influenced my dad that much.

Tuner cars were around long before the F&F movies, the movie just brought it to the mainstream public. My friends in high school took me to the illegal street races once before the movie and video games were made...mind blown! 300zx's, supras, rx7's and eclipses heavily modified like alien spaceships from another world! These cars only came out at night, which made the scene even more cool!

It's sad but true, a lot of people think every DSM was turbo all wheel drive, but only 5 % of total production was the GSX and TSi AWD , so they were pretty rare off the bat , even new. The Turbo All Wheel Drive versions have a high visibility factor in comparison to there numbers because all the DSMs people see on KZbin or Facebook are the Turbo All Wheel Drive versions, it seems like 80 % of those models ended up as drag cars or street racing lol, I've owned a 95 Tsi awd since new .

I am just super glad to remember watching the entire transition in my own backyard and never knowing what was going on. My kids will replay my rants and stories of “the good old days” of car culture. But you can’t help but wonder what our next generation will bring and I personally am looking forward to the “look what I did to this car” type stories. As long as tools and knowledge flows our generations will make it their own!

+1 for most underrated tuning car of all time. People love to shit on the 4th gens because no AWD nor 4G63, but keep in mind the V6 of that generation was by far the most powerful iteration. While you can't tune it quite as well as a turbo, it still responds very well to bolt-ons and reflashes. My own is putting down 280whp on simple bolt-ons and a 94 octane map. Not bad for a car that you can buy and build for less than 10k

it really isn't a solid performer when you consider the cars people are comparing it to / alternatives in its segment. Its actually quite slow and handles pretty poor for even a FWD car... No hate, just facts... helped my friend tune his 4th Gen GT and had a bitch of a time finding bolt ons that wasn't megan racing crap or from RIP. Theres more to a car than raw performance like every no car bitch ass kid wants to comment about on youtube. Drive and enjoy what works for you!
@jordanprice9285
@jordanprice9285 6 жыл бұрын
Rawdawgggg actually not true.. they can make 400hp naturally aspirated which is pretty cool considering this car doesn't have too much of a cult following like the 4G63 or 420A variants.. and yes, I mean, it isn't as good as the other things in the market, but I think it can be made to handle pretty well for it's size.. RRE Motorsports made a turbo one back in 08 and there's even a video of it on track racing at Willow Springs Raceway..
@manfromnantucket9544
@manfromnantucket9544 6 жыл бұрын
Rawdawgggg Sure it may be a bit heavy and has a poor weight distribution, but it sure as hell isn't what most people would call slow. My first car was a 2001 Chrysler sebring coupe lxi. My dad bought it new and in 2003 when he bought a jeep grand cherokee overland, he gave me the sebring, Which was a Mitsubishi eclipse with a Chrysler body and slight cosmetic differences inside. It was 5 speed with a short throw, had grey leather seats, black body and dash, chrome rims, Infiniti audio system with 6 disk Indash changer, and enough room in the back for fooling around with babes. It wasn't the best car, it wasn't the fastest car, but to me, it was the best car ever made. I used to always tell people it was an eclipse wearing a Chrysler jacket. My friends still always talk about it because of how much time we all spent in it. Even the girl I dated off and on through high-school, still says how much she loved it.. The eclipse/sebring will always be an important car to me.

My dad bought an Eagle Talon DSM from some hillbilly's barn near central MS. I was 14 when he said "Son this is going to be your car when you're in high school." The car was running, very shabby condition, but I loved the thing. That year during Christmas he and I were headed out for some last minute shopping and, of course, we tried to max speed because duh. He only made 4th gear on a 3/4 mi stretch at 120 mph. After that run with hot tires and high adrenaline, we head home. Some lady was on our street driving in the wrong lane, talking on the phone, and smacking at her toddler in the back seat. My dad swerved out of her way and struck a brick mailbox. The car was ditched and the passenger side was in shit shape but neither of us were hurt apart from our egos. Drove the car home fine too. Next morning he starts the car and CLICK dut-dut-dut-dooom. The intercooler was punctured and filled with water, worked its way to the block and forever locked the motor. (edit) I forgot to mention, i think the tires somehow got quenched in the rain puddles because there is no way he swerved that hard to change lanes at 35 mph and ended up slipping into the mailbox. oof.

They threw all their eggs in one basket into the evo, without making the 4g a awd turbo that wouldve been a evo killer. Or at least bring back the 3000gt. Both the evo and sti sat on their crown hoping their audience will continue to support them with no innovation for more than a decade while letting their competition catch up. Hope they fail and go bankrupt with nissan now owning 1/3 of their company. Just quit mitsubishi you're a piece of shit company now, ruined the name.

Their outlanders sell at the bottom of the price line so that says it all about the health of the company. They can still make it up like you said if they bring back the 3000gt vr4 (hopefully not an SUV as well lol) but I think the damage to their reputation has already been done. And sports cars are not doing so well currently despite the economy improving. Anyone who's not a millennial will never forget!

I had a yellow and black eclipse hot wheels when I was a kid and it was one of my favorites. Now I drive a 2011 lancer sport back. Not exactly the same, but the thing can really get around. It's a nice little full circle moment for me.

Back in the mid 90's, I had a '91 Eagle Talon GST - it was my first fast car. 190 HP - what's not to love? It didn't take long for the turbo lag to get old (it wasn't modded). I swore I'd never again buy a turbo car, but that only lasted until I bought a new Gen 1 Speed 3. No turbo lag or not enough to be annoying! The lust for power carried over to the next (current) car - a '16 Golf R. At first it felt slower than the Speed 3 but a solution was quickly discovered - tuning! The R now sports nearly 400 HP and 409 FT LBs of torque. My lust for lag-free power has been satisfied (4 1/2 years into the ownership of this car) and I'm hoping it will last me the rest of my life as I am well into my senior years.

it prolly pisses the mitsu dealership i work at off when their service techs drive and modify their old school mitsu but wont touch their new stuff with a 10-foot pole lol. Also even the customers gravitate to their old models more than the new ones xD.

They forgot to pay the freelance designer that created the DSM designs. Same thing is happening to Ford right now. Companies rip off everyone including designers. Oh well...I guess that's why the back some of Ferrari's look like lady parts!😄
