Mitsubishi and Subaru were locked in a battle for supremacy for over a decade - both on road, and off it. For many, the peak of road going Mitsubishis would be this, the Lancer 6 Tommi Makinen edition. I'm a Subaru fan, but how good is the 6?

My personal favourite out of all Evos. In a semi-Group A spec it went toe to toe with WRC machinery. Post 1996 Imprezas and all later Evos are 'just' roadcars but no homologation cars for the greatest of all rally competitions, WRC.

@Graham Creese Yes I do agree. He is such a natural driver, that he has managed to do quite a few different genres of motorsport and as championed them all. How many other drivers can put that on their CV. The only reason I did not say him is because he is to me outside of F1 he is the greatest all round driver of our generation. Period.

The Evos always seemed more special or exotic to me. But the Imprezas have more character and a more unique sound. You know when it's an Impreza tearing about. Evo's sound meh. Looked at these the 9s and the hawkeye JDM Impreza but went for 1jz vvti power instead

@@chappy2121 Subarus definitely have a unique sound. They sound alright to me. But a superior sound? Absolutely not. 4g63 is one of the best sounding inline 4s. Subies boxer sounds pretty bland to be honest. They don't build up to anything. I love both but I'm not even being biased when I say evos are better performance wise. Wrx have the overall package better. I'll give them that. As in they're comfortable to drive and of course sporty. But Mitsubishi scraped aside comfort and went straight for performance and it shows.

Enjoyed your video. Tommi Mak in Canal Blue, very very nice . Having owned a IV, VI and a VII back in the 00's I still have fond memories how capable these cars were/are. These Evo's are still just about affordable Tommi aside. Downside is they can rot in a fashion if not looked after hence many people buying the JDM imports which are usually rot free. Tommi Makinen edition (evo 6.5) had the shorter steering ratio of later evos (7, 8, 9) compared to 5 and 6. The RS weighed 1260kg and lacked AYC (but still had ACD), A/C, sound system, had standard Lancer seats and small steel wheels. GSR had them all and weighed 1360kg. RS was quite rare until evo 8 and 9 as it was more for people and teams to use as base for their race builds. Although Evo 10 is nice out of the box stock, I think it is kind of large and heavy for what it is. Also, if the car has some Japanese brand aftermarket suspension system, they tend to be crashy and bouncy (mainly Tein, but pretty much all of them, HKS, Zeal, etc), they focus too much on high spring rates only.
@jamesrichards5601
@jamesrichards5601 3 жыл бұрын
Great video James. The GSR model is the version you are driving, whereas the RS is the rarest model and came with steel wheels from factory, unpainted mirrors and handles, a shorter final drive ratio and were predominantly in Scotia White (Though 1 model was sold in Satellite Silver and 1 was sold in Passion Red making them truly unique). I believe the GSR model is the most desired in terms of value and much more collectible but the RS is the most raw and hardcore drivers variant. 😀

An absolute legend this it brings a tear to my man pride for two reasons one I nearly bought one for about 10K back in the day and it would be worth a lot more now, second because they stop making them 😪 in 2001 I got a Mitsubishi FTO GPX mivec instead, not a lot of people know its an Evo 6 with a prettier shell on top, and an advanced V6 and gearbox. Mitsubishi always proved to be that little bit better in the engineering department I like Subarus but if you compare and EVO 10 or the previous generations the evolution of those cars was so much better as you can see on Top Gear funny clip thrown around the tracker 110 miles an hour they handle better than supercars. Every petrol head should be contacting Mitsubishi and begging them to bring out a new one instead of their borrowing suv they have now.

The EVO VI TME RS & Ralliart versions in the UK were actually the fastest track cars in the series. The later model FQ model's were definitely fast, but weight increased due to all the extra technology, so they couldn't actually beat this model. 1/4 mile times were similar across the board. I think the EVO VI performance model's were more reliable however.

I owned this exact colour and spec although mine was a 3 year old ralliart uk spec (even less of them around, just meant things like the fog light were integrated into the bumper rather than hanging off it!). The front bumper was the classic difference between a normal evo vi and my one came with Mitsubishi warranty but it never missed a beat (only problem I had was a clunking noise on the front diff on full turn due to Mitsubishi putting the wrong length screws in the front diff so they sheared off). On B roads nothing could touch it back in the day and that gearbox was a dream, short shifting and precise. Happy days

I remember when this car appeared & they had to compare it with the fastest exotics because nothing else came close. But nothing could actually beat it. They actually recommended the best from BMW & Audi because they offered a significant amount of the EVO's speed with much better comfort's to enjoy, plus the EVO could only beat them when it was flat out. The EVO VI TME RS is even faster due to even more weight reductions, think the fastest exotics would be even more humbled. Think it's a low 12sec 1/4 mile car & still the fastest track EVO to this day due to it's lighter weight. Reliable buggers too, it's a combination of Mitsubishi's best & most durable technologies.

Subaru were probably more famous in Rallying. Mostly thanks to the late great Colin Mcrae but the EVO VI was the far better driving road car with much less understeer than the Scooby.

Tommi Makinen was a more successful driver than Colin McRae, hence 4 driver championship to 1

@MunroM84 Look at my wording.... I didn't say Subaru were more dominant but more Famous. Especially in the mid 90's.

@@sallypowers1131 Yes he probably was, measures of success and fame are 2 different things though..... It's like comparing Schumacher with Hamilton..... also success for any driver, comes about from having a better car..... There's success and dominance, which go hand in hand but talent is a better measure of a driver IMO but lets not get into that argument :)

@@sallypowers1131 Yes he drove to push the limits more than most others and hence if you are pushing it to the limit then sometimes you are going to crash. Most racing drivers, drive at 90% for 90% of the time and the other 10% they are giving 100% but Mcrae gave 100% at least 90% of the time and the other 10% he crashed or had car failures (his car failed more than others because he was pushing it to the limit and therefore being harder or the mechanicals) All the best drivers crash because they are driving to the absolute limit and then there are those who drive the best car in their field and don't need to push it to the absolute limit but they still look good because they are winning but it's actually the car that's really winning.

The Evo X is honestly better in every way tho, unless your talking about a luxury spec MR, not a fan of evos trying to be Audi's. But the Evo X is a better drivers car and more capable than the earlier gens.

The X is shit. Boring compared to a Tommi. It’s not about speed. The X or 7-9 is nothing compared to a red Tommi with the decals.
@becomeraptureready

Well let me explain why the Evo X is actually FAR superior to the 6. Engine- The 4B11t is a whole 40lbs lighter than the 4G63t, while actually being more rigid. The 4B11t is a semi-closed deck, which gives it most of the strength of a closed deck and ALL of the cooling of a open-deck. The 4G63s closed deck iron block ONLY becomes a pro after surpassing the 1200whp mark, before or at that power level the 4B11 is equal or better on all fronts. Also, the 4G63 has balance shafts, which are a failure point, and also eat extra power, which is not race car at all. The 4B11t has no balance shafts! It is a square engine and has very good balance at all RPM's. Emissions- The 4G63 is plagued with all the terrible 80's emissions equipment, such as EGR and a bunch of garbage, the 4B11 has none of that stuff bone stock! The 4B11 was designed to be better than the 4G63 on every single front, by the engineers that were responsible for the 4G63. Not to mention, stock for stock, the 4B11 gets better fuel economy, more power and torque, less emissions (climate change is a hoax btw), and revs higher and smoother while hitting boost 500rpm sooner than the 4G63! Transmission- We all know the 5 speed is the holy grail in evo land, and the 6 speed was good but not up to the task of a modified Evo. The 5 speed in the Evo X is BY FAR stronger and beefier than the 5 speed in earlier Evos. RALLIART was involved to make sure the trans would take any and all abuse from their rally customers that would buy an Evo X to compete with. We all know Mitsubishi, the company, left rally shortly after the TME came out, but they had many many teams that wished to buy a rally car from Mitsubishi in which to compete with, and the Evo X has had much success in rally despite it only being used by smaller private teams and not a manufacturer. They even won the 2013 Safari Rally with an Evo X, the toughest rally in the world bar none. Looks- This is subjective, I love the TME, I've driven an Evo 6 and it was fine, and I would agree with many when saying the Evo X just doesnt have the spice. However, I have modified my own Evo X is a bare bones, WRC inspired way, that truly makes it far sexier than even a Ford RS200 in my eyes. With a proper livery, and the right basic parts, it is capable of stealing all the attention from a TME. Chassis- The Evo X has a chassis that is 40% stiffer than the Evo 9 MR, which means its roughly 65% stiffer than the TME. The chassis is extremely safe, seeing as my first Evo X saved me in a bad wreck where someone cut me off, no injury or anything. The chassis and steering speaks to you and it is such a good drive, the handling and wizardry in the AWD is unexplainable. Certainly there are few cars in history that can turn in and YAW through a corner like the X specifically. This is my short introduction into why the hated X is better than the beloved TME.

@@becomeraptureready everyone knows the X is technically superior to the 6. But it will never have the Motorsport legendary history that the 5/6 have. It will never have the iconic look. The X is just not there and never will be. Don’t bother trying to convince yourself otherwise.
