Mitsubishi Mirage - New Stereo With Wireless CarPlay

Installing a new stereo into our 6th generation Mirage that is capable of wireless CarPlay. The product shown in the video is Model 4G-64GB here:

The only tools used in the video are a flat and Philips head screw driver. Everything else such as the plastic trim tool, cables came with the radio.
If you are planning to buy a generic double din radio. You will need to buy a wiring kit such as Metra 70-7005 and a dash trim kit, as a bracket to support a standard double din radio is needed such as Metra 99-7016GHG. You will also need some soldering skills and patience to assemble your wiring harness.

Updates: Apparently the second connector we didn't wire into our new radio is probably for steering wheel controls. I don't have any buttons on my steering wheel so this doesn't effect me.

Update, the delayed boot really bothers me, the radio won't support bluetooth remotes for steering controls and the CarPlay sometimes drops connection which is very dangerous since i have to look down to my phone to reconnect the bluetooth for the radio to start working again. Very dangerous when relying on it for maps. Also, very importantly the GPS on the unit is literally horrible, when driving downtown in an area with high rise condos around, apple maps placed the car in lake ontario...

Update: The radio screen flickers when i'm driving and press on the brakes. I think it maybe some sort of issue with the illumination circuit receiving power but i'm unsure. I no longer recommend this radio until i resolve this issue as its very distracting to have the radio dim then brighten its screen rapidly every time you press the brake pedal.

The illumination circuit receives power from the same fuse that feeds the tail light relay / lamps. That was probably ok with the original radio having minimal current draw for illumination, but the new radio display draws more current, stressing the components on that circuit. You might rewire the illumination power wire to receive power from another key on power source, or use the incoming illumination power wire as the power source for the control side of a relay and pull power for the load side off the cigarette lighter power port (if the car has one). I'm not an expert so talk to one before doing any wiring. 👍

I'm glad you added that part. My wife is very sensitive to bright lights and any lights changing brightness would have bothered her. I'd have had to pull it right back out.

Interesting. How come you didn’t want to consider the head unit from the SE trim level, the one that has 2 knobs, buttons, and a CD player? Seem like it would’ve been a plug and play install and easy user interface.

A couple of reasons: 1.At the time of filming it wasn't easy to find one of these radios used. The CarPlay radio has only been our since 2017(i think) and only on higher trim levels so its not super easy to find used/at a junk yard. If you go on car-part.com all the cars I found have the non-touch screen radio you see me remove in the video. They do exist on eBay but it is a risky game for me as I am in Canada and would need to pay for international shipping 2 ways if it didn't work. Also note that brand new the radio is out of my budget: www.ebay.ca/itm/363783846760 2. I wanted wireless CarPlay and when this video came out last year most wired to wireless CarPlay adapters were not reliable and were expensive so this seemed like a cheaper alternative to me. This radio also came with a backup camera that I have not yet installed which was appealing to me. 3. I think this radio has a bigger screen than the OEM one(although I maybe wrong).

I use it every time I drive. Maybe 1 in 10 times either the music stops working or the Bluetooth disconnects and I have to pull out my phone to reconnect. The brightness is a bit too much for me at night and the screen flickers when braking but that maybe a wiring issue with my car. Otherwise it is ok. If I had to do this again I’d probably get an OEM unit with a wireless adapter for CarPlay from something like quad lock. Aside from functionality this unit is not held in with screws and will go flying if I crash. If this was much cheaper then an OEM unit then I would consider buying it again. Before this I used a phone stand and my problem was the phone would overheat since I don’t have air conditioning. If you have air conditioning this setup is not really better than a phone stand.

I installed it where the factory one would go if I had the higher trim with the touch screen radio. It’s all plastic above it. GPS quality is not good. Using Waze the gps works much better but the phone also gets warm. I think they are using the phones gps in combination with the radio. Newer cars will use the can bus data for speed and steering position to help with gps. An aftermarket radio can never compete. The radio gps works fine as long as I don’t drive downtown. I would compare it to maybe a Samsung s4 from a decade ago.

The main difference between oem and this Chinese thing is the WIREless CarPlay and if you wanted to run other android apps, i.e plug in a tpms sensor system or watch Netflix directly (maybe while driving or something like that) Thank you for watching!

Yeah any radio can work if you buy the double din adapter kit and wiring harness and do your own wiring. This involves connecting the car specific harness you buy and the one that comes with the radio together. This kit came with a premade wiring harness and the plastic bezel/frame that is custom fit for the car.

Yes it has Bluetooth. All CarPlay radios I’ve seen also support Bluetooth.

Does your usb working with CarPlay? Android auto is working but not CarPlay.

I only ever use the wireless connection with a fast charger plugged into the 12v socket. I tried to use usb once but it appeared to only want to connect wirelessly. If you are also having connectivity issues maybe consider a usb to wireless CarPlay adapter.

@@welfarewagonrepairs thanks for your replying . I contacted the seller, CarPlay is wireless and AA is wired. So nothing to change about. On Reddit i saw people using carlinkit to let wired. (Better connection/ quality of sound). Good video btw! Very detailed and easy to follow.

Does stock 2021-2022 radio do wireless carplay? The stock one does SeriusXM which is desirable (and it being OEM and all). Not sure what all adapters are needed for that conversion!

I do not believe any mirage has wireless CarPlay, in the USA only SE and up have CarPlay. But i believe it is wired. @@welfarewagonrepairs in 21and 22 I think carplay became standard with the newer larger screen alpine radio. Looks like they sell adapters for usb to turn any ole carplay radio into wireless carplay. No one saves the adapter harnesses at these dealers before crushing so idk how I am going to hook this up...

@@0zfer im in canada, on the 2022 mitsubishi mirage official brochure, CarPlay is offered on the 7 inch touchscreen that comes on SE and higher trims. The cheapest model (ES trim) doesn't have it. @@welfarewagonrepairs It needs adapter for USB, and harness for MIC and GPS antenna. Only usb adapters are available online. The others need to be fabricated, acquired from another car, or you can forgo the GPS and/or mic as they not required unless you want them. This chinese unit doesn't have any way to support siriusxm right? This is probably the main benefit along with being majority plug and play (metra port/ antenna/ steering wheel controls/backup camera) with the OEM Alpine Carplay unit. As I mentioned, wireless carplay can be added to OEM radio.

@@0zfer i have never used sirusxm. Im not sure why/how its better than spotify. I believe sirusxm has a CarPlay app that uses your phone data to work. So that would probably work on this radio. My biggest issues with the radio are the lack of automatic brightness adjustment, the minimum adjustment is too bright, slow boot (about 10-15 seconds) and most importantly to me the lack of steering wheel controls. id like to be able to change songs without looking at the radio.

Hi there, I bought exactly the same, all works perfect but the left connector that left loose probably goes for steering wheel controls and I don't know how to connect them,. the seller said there are 2 wires (key 1 and key 2) that are ment for that.. but there are 4 buttons on controller so I said maybe I will connect at least the volume up and volume down to them but I don't know what colors to connect.. any experience with that anybody ? thanks ahead

Each button probably does not have its own wire. The cruise control buttons only have a total of 2 wires each button connects the two with a different resistor that the computer can understand and identify.

Works ok when plugged in, it’s does not work well when used wirelessly. The screen also flickers when I hit the brakes and the gps does not work well downtown. I would look elsewhere unless this was much cheaper than the alternatives

I only bought this because my phone would overheat as I don’t have air conditioning. If you have air conditioning then a good quality phone stand like the quad lock is easier to use and more reliable than this.

I tried to find the ones you have from the link you attached to your description but it didn’t work. How do yours fit are they very loose or do they sit pretty snug? The ones I bought were rattling badly so had to take them out they almost just fell out that’s how loose they were.

Shitty made in china multimedia system. Very laggy, slow response, no knobs, no volume/home button lighting. Brightness way too high and it’s very dazzling at night. At daytime, this screen is so glossy. Worthless piece of junk.

The glossy screen and high brightness are annoying. I do not have any issue with lag, its possible we have the same model but with a different processor and amount of ram.

Yes you need a new fascia. The one shown in the video came with the radio and wiring harness from Ali express. The new radio is literally held to the car by the plastic fascia. You can find this exact radio if you search on aliexpress. It claims to be 9 inches but I have never measured it. Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to leave this comment.
