I can empathise. I have breast cancer and will be having my operation on Monday. The surgery won’t be straightforward as I have other chronic health problems so will need tubing and ICU after the op. I’m nervous but grateful for the NHS. Best wishes to your father for a speedy recovery Harry!

The Art Gear Guide, Just Me & Debbie Hill - thank you so much for your comments and care which I unfortunately missed as I took a hiatus off the net after the op as I took time to recover. I’ve just read them now due to a notification about Debbie commenting - so thank you Debbie! Initially they refused to do the operation due to my other conditions, and after a couple of months they eventually agreed providing I was tubed and had ICU bed (as posted above.) I am SO SO fortunate that the anaesthetist and surgeon eventually agreed because they found a second tumour at my chest wall that did NOT show on any of the scans that were carried out. Had I not had the op then I dread to think. My surgeon was excellent, an angel for spotting it! I’m due my mammogram soon so fingers crossed all is well and my next aim is to reach 5 years clear. Thanks again, and may I humbly take this opportunity to mention the importance of checking for lumps - both males and females. Checking regularly gets you used to how your chest feels so you can detect changes far more quickly. Now I check at least once every month. Thanks again, and sending a virtual hug to all ❤️❤️❤️

There is a product for blending Holbein pencils which are called Meltz. I purchased it from Japan when I got my Holbein pencils. If you have Holbein pencils this Meltz melts the pencils to move like watercolor. I have taken off a type of paint that pencils and Meltz makes. This Meltz product only works with Holbein pencils but I wonder if the Uni pencils are made for the Meltz product like Holbein. I tried other blending products with Holbein pencils and they do not work something like the problem you have with the Uni pencils. Maybe give the product Meltz a try and maybe a review on the product with Holbein pencils.

Thank you so much for such a wonderfully kind and supportive comment. Funny thing is and I mentioned it to another subscriber here. Before my Dad had his surgery, he told their gardener what he was going to have done, a wee man that My Mum and Dad have employed for about 10 years now to help them with their garden because my Mum loves flowers and the garden but is terrible at keeping them alive lol. Any way, the man, who my Dad calls a personal friend for the past 10 years, told my Dad that he had a bag. My Dad was shocked and I seriously think it was this that set his mind at rest. I think my Dad thought it was going to be a huge obtrusive thing and not very discreet. Any way I will certainly pass on your comment to my Dad as I have done with all the wonderful comments that have been left for him. My first thought too! What possessed Mitsubishi to make colored pencils? Thank you so much for the thorough review!
@wesleythompson451 Жыл бұрын
Mitsubishi is a pencil company. You may be confusing Mitsubishi Pencil Company (which is often called Uni for their pencils, or Uni-ball for their pens) with Mitsubishi Group, which is a car manufacturer. They have the same logo only because the name Mitsubishi is an ancient Japanese family with an associated family crest. This crest is the logo you see in every company called Mitsubishi, but some of the companies are completely unrelated. Many of them used to be related before ww2, but have since split. Mitsubishi Pencil Company was never affiliated with the others.
@tinatomaszewski6473 Жыл бұрын
@@wesleythompson451 Yeah, I was kind of making a joke about it. I figured it was a separate or different company. But thanks for sharing and replying to me!

Before I made the video I sent a couple of emails to the company as I do with every review I complete. I’d rather get the information from the company as opposed to reading or listening to someone else reviews because they could be just as wrong. However it took them ages to reply and so I got on with the video. The main questions I asked them was about the actual product, type of wood used for the barrel, total set sizes and lots more. However I did ask them about the link to the vehicle manufacturer. According to the email I have from the pencil manufacturer, they are a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi the vehicle manufacturer, they have other subsidiaries connected and the art is just one of them. It is late here in the U.K., 01:34 so, tomorrow, Sunday, I will add a copy of the email to my written review and make of it what you will. This is not me saying this, this is in response to a series of questions I sent to them. Don’t get me wrong, I have sent emails to companies before and been told one thing by one individual and something completely different by another individual. But at least when I go directly to the company and I quote their reply, there is not too much that can come back on me as I have done my due diligence, to the best of my ability.

@@TheArtGearGuide I completely understand! You did your part and I, for one, appreciate it! Thank you!
@wesleythompson451 Жыл бұрын
@TheArtGearGuide The person you emailed with may, in fact, be wrong in relation to whether there is a link between the companies. Mitsubishi pencil is not affiliated with or a part of the Mitsubishi Group, which is parent to many of the other Mitsubishi brands, including the Mitsubishi motor company. On Mitsubishi pencil's official website, they list every associated company, and all of them have to do with art, writing, paper, pencils, and so forth. There is no mention of any motor company. Mitsubishi pencil was founded before the Mitsubishi Group was, and they are allowed to use the same logo as the larger corporation because they had it first. I'm sure many within the company are unaware of these details, as it's easy to relate the two companies, but they don't have any relation. This is probably why your received email included such a mistake. It's a common mistake for humans to assume that you know something because it appears obvious when, in fact, what seems to be an obvious truth often turns out to be a misconception. Have a wonderful day!

I was just thinking about your dad before I watched this post. I'm glad that things are looking up. :) Oh, and Nokia started out making rubber boots. People have been trying to get lightfastness info on these pencils for years, and got nowhere. You'd have to do your own. The pigment testing issue is why we can't get Holbein in Canada either. I, as an addict, want them of course, but I'm content to have my Luminance and Faber-Castells. What I really want, though, is that Caran d'Ache 30 anniversary Supracolor set with the new colours. You can't buy it in Canada, and there's no apparent intention to market them here at all. I've been in contact with them about it. It's very pricey to order them in, too.
@TheArtGearGuide5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I was going to say about the Supracolor Anniversary set that you can order direct from the Caran d'Ache Website as they ship globally, however it would be very expensive for the set. Also my only concern about that set is that Caran d'Ache will eventually do away with the set, leaving artists who have used the colors in their work in the lurch if they phase them out. But I know what you mean, I would love to get them also, I would also like to see Cara d'Ache bring out a 150 set of Supracolor Soft and make it a regular set.
@LonitaFraser5 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtGearGuide Some of the colours in that 30 set are actually in the Luminance line. Not sure if any appear in Pablo. I haven't looked through that. I'd be all over a larger Luminance set as well. A friend of mine was in Japan a few months back, and was going to pick me up the Holbeins, but they would have cost almost $500 CAD. I can order them through that shop on eBay for less than that.

Your dog is so cute he distracted me I thought how much I would love to paint him. Thank you. I use Polychromos, Caran d ache and the Derwent ones that are lightfast because of trying to grow in business. Toxicity really is a big deal. Thank you for mentioning that. I wonder if they are similar to the Black Widow, Cobra and Scorpion set which here sell for about $16 per box on Amazon. They are waxed based and use recycled material so they are all black. If one isn't worried about lightfastness they are a lot of fun.
@TheArtGearGuide5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennie thank you so much for your kind comment. You are so right however about lightfastness if you are trying to start up your own business and sell your work, lightfast will be of paramount importance, it will also give you the ability to justify your prices to those who dont have a clue about art and just expect artists to knock up a portrait in 5 minutes with a few colored pencils. If you are asking about the Uni compared to the Black Widow etc, I would say they are a bit similar regarding lay down and coverage. Thank you once again so much for your kind comment.

It sounds odd when you're not used to the idea, and when it comes to health, odd can feel scary. Hi mate and thank you, I try not to reference too much, ordinarily I write to the companies directly every time I do a review because I always want to make sure that I am giving the views and subscribers 100% accurate information. However, not all companies reply, most of them do and as a result I have struck up some fantastic relationships with reps from the different companies and have learnt such a lot from them. Unfortunately Mitsubishi is one such company, however, sometimes it is just a matter of time before they get back to me and when they do I will update the review. This is why I always add a written review to my reviews, it is much easier to update a written review when needed as opposed to remaking a new video.

I personally think they are worth the money, the 72 set I purchased worked out at less than £1 per pencil, I think the full set cot me £71. With regards to the portraiture, the thing is Caran d'Ache Luminance have some of the most beautiful portrait pigments, but there are also some really gorgeous pigments in the Faber Castell Polychromos for portraiture. But now to make your selection ever more complicated, Derwent have released there colour chart for the full 100 pigments of the Lightfast pencils and on the chart they to look like they have some beautiful pigments. But in terms of actually lay down and blending I would have to say it is very very close between the Luminance and the new Derwent Lightfast. But the excellent thing is, if you are a portrait artist, all three sets are sold open stock and so you can create your own palette by buying what you need open stock and all three pencils work beautifully together. Hope this has helped you

are the core of this pencils like polychromos? so smooth and on the harder side of the spectrum. smooth instead of soft.
@TheArtGearGuide5 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent way of comparing them, I will be doing a comparison video with a few other pencils and the Mitsubishi, similar to the Derwent comparison video I made. When I do reviews I like to keep the review just about that one product and company and not mention other companies, which is why I decided to start a comparison series of videos were I can mention other companies. Excellent description of the Mitsubishi.

All of the best and I will pray that they have all of the cancer. And a very speedy recovery. He’s very blessed because as you said it was discovered by happenstance. I’m over the moon so happy for you and your family. After 30 years of being a nurse I’ve seen both scenarios and I’m pleased that your fathers tumors were removed. Uni Mitsubishi is a part of the Mitsubishi company and founded in 1887. Those pencils are beautiful and I love hard pencils. We in the USA have to get them on eBay and on JetPens.com they have open stock Thank you for all that you do.

Many manufacturers add lead to the lead, this is a traditional old recipe for making colored pencils. Lead additives in children's pencils were banned in the 1980s, but professional pencils still use lead. The US also prohibits the import of celluloid plastic from which boxes are made, so there are iron, cardboard and wooden. Celluloid is toxic and fire hazard. They are often placed as tray trays and holders inside set boxes, which can make the entire set banned from importation and sale into the US, even if the pencils are fine. Due to the lead content in professional pencils, it is recommended to use blenders and shading fingers when working with them. Children should not use professional pencils because they can often ingest them. You cannot put them in your mouth and soak them in saliva. Such manufacturers use lead recipes: Prismacolor, Tombow, Caran d'ash, Uni, Derwent, Faber-Castell (professional series)... many Chinese manufacturers.

In my opinion, I prefer unhealthy pigments in the colors and paint, as unhealthy additives in the food. With the colors and paint you can handle them properly so that it has no effect on you. With food, it's impossible to handle it properly without harming yourself because it's there to eat, if it contains harmful substances. What I mean by that is that the US safety regulations are totally ironic in my mind. Is it a food, then there may be almost everything is allowed in it, except things that have become obsolete anyway. Because there are cheaper alternatives, these substances are alibi-prohibited. So then the FDA has a sense of why it exits. While the safety regulations for objects, or things that are not food, are much higher. Probably because it is assumed that someone does not know how to handle something properly. The person should not harm himself either with it. But I also noticed that some people from the United States are much more concerned about the harmfulness of objects than about food. Well I live in the EU where the safety regulations are relatively balanced. Except for a few things. For example hydrochloric acid can easily buy in the hardware store.

The risk from art materials are often tied to evaporation and dust, things you really can't handle without using respirators, great ventilation, gloves etc. Be happy you're not going to die from your hobby/work/fun.
@askialuna77175 жыл бұрын
I did not mean pure pigments, but finished colors like acrylic paint, oil paints, watercolor pencils and so on. I do not have to touch the color with my fingers to use them properly. I can also use a brush / paint knife / fork and so on to apply the paint to the paper / canvas / ground. And for pastels, there are paper blenders and soft applicators. No one needs to use solvents to properly use oil paints, which is optional.

It matter if it’s wax or oil because some people want to avoid the wax bloom issue.
@TheArtGearGuide5 жыл бұрын
I understand that if there was such a thing as just wax or just oil based pencils. By all means contact any pencil manufacturing company ask for correspondence to their Chemists and ask them the core ingredients of their product because they won’t tell you all the ingredients as they are secret. Or just ask them about the oil or wax statement. There are many different waxes, fillers, Clay and oils but not just one. I understand the blooming effect and it is something I have put to the companies and they have said it is not wax related it happens with all manner of pencils and is due to over layering and over working the pigment.
@ReverieOfThorns3 ай бұрын
The pencils are made of synthetic wax according to other people who have made videos on these pencils on here. I suggest looking at some of them for more information, although it's still rather limited in what is out there for them that has been translated from Japanese. I would also like to point out that wax bloom really isn't as big of a deal as people make it out to be, but if you want to avoid it, I suggest you only use the highest quality professional pencils like Caran D'ache Pablo or Luminance, Faber-Castell Polychromos and Derwent Lightfast. Most other pencils have a chance at having wax bloom as ALL pencils contain oil and wax in their ingredients. Just because a pencil is "wax based" doesn't equal wax bloom, either.

@@catlady256yeah, I've noticed that on some of the videos on here with that set. They pull all the pencils forward and the case becomes a bit unstable. I don't think the set was made to have them all pulled forward, hence why the color numbers are listed under each row of 4. I think you're just supposed to pull the ones you're using forward, but I could be wrong.

Uni-ball is a Mitsubishi brand. Japanese keiretsu have tens of thousands of product lines. Same in Korea, where chaebol, their conglomerates, make everything. Samsung make cars in Korea.

@ReverieOfThorns3 ай бұрын
Hello! These pencils are made of a synthetic wax according to several other reviewers. This is likely why Harry had such a difficult time using OMS on them and why that just didn't work. I'm guessing the synthetic material the wax is made of doesn't break down the same way as pencils with natural waxes. Hope this helps, although it is 9 months late...

Thank you so much for your kind wishes regarding my Father, he still has a long way to go but all is well so far and that is all we can ask for at the minute. Thank you so much. The Uni are quite a hard core, they hold a point well but when they lay down and you use them, they feel soft on the paper. They are a weird pencil to explain. In my opinion, these pencils are one of those pencils that requires the right paper in order for them to shine. The colors in the set are gorgeous although like I said in the review I wish I had of purchased the 100 Set as opposed to the 72 Set. I think the Japanese companies really know how to provide gorgeous palettes.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me and for you well wishes. When my Dad was first told that he would need a bag, I thought he would take it badly, but he later found out that their gardener, who has been cutting their grass and tending their gardens for about 10 years now had one and my Dad never knew anything about it until he told my Dad. This really set my Dads mind at rest that it would not be a very noticeable thing , something quite discreet. He has taken to it now that he has it, really well, I am so proud of him and happy for him and I have so much respect for many other people such as yourself who live with it. Thank you so much for your kind comment and support.

Personally, I have not found these anywhere stocked in a store (I live in California) and got it on Amazon for $117 (probably the cheapest I've seen for 100 set). I think I got them in like 2013 or 2014. I haven't seen open stock either. I got these pencils a while back (before I ended up seeing reviews of these). And no, don't expect longevity. I have also did a lightfast test on these on 500 series illustration board by Strathmore as soon as I got them, and some colors started changing in a day and some where drastic (the flesh colors changed A LOT in a short time). Not every color of course, but a lot were very fast, including purples (not surprising them however). I'd have to go find my old swatch and look at the colors. I only kept the board up for a month, but I feel it was enough to not use a lot of the colors for works that I intend to sell. And by the way, you and your family have a wonderful day and speedy recovery to your father.
