The reason why the gray box includes such a combination of colors -- For that box, on the cover it reads 'Low of Heaven and Earth', that's why it includes blue and brown colors. On the spine of the box, it says it includes 'x sky colors, x earthy color, x human (skin tone) colors', because, in Chinese philosophy, the 'Law of Heaven and Earth' refers to the principle that human should live and behave in harmony with nature - heaven and earth. That's why this box includes the colors of sky, earth and human skin.

that is very interesting. On another review, commenters said that the Red, Green Yellow and Blue boxes said North South East and West, and the writing in the corner was the kind of animal pictured. And the black/neutral box said CENTER and the Law of Heaven and Earth thing, but didn't go into the kind of detail you listed I saw a video about Chinese zodiac once, personalities, and even blood types and all of that affects your personality. But they had 5 elements instead of the 4 we're used to seeing. I think they had Wood and Metal instead of Earth. Which element you were had to do with what year you were born in, or the last digit in the year.. So you could be born in, say year of the Rooster, but not have the same element as every other person who also was in year of the Rooster.

But earth is there, they are phases of change that influence each other. These include earth, metal, wood, water and fire. In the zodiac sign, there are yearly months and day animals. Of which one is always a bit from the character, so the year zodiac sign is the rough basis, on it the month builds zodiac sign and then the day zodiac sign.

While your reviews are probably the most detailed and comprehensive out there, it's the personal touch that made me subscribe to this channel rather then just googling new reviews from time to time. If you are curious about the Chinese on the packaging, here is what I could figure out: (I apologize for how long this turned out) On the spine of each box are characters for the season that they represent, and the type of colors inside: Red is "Flowers of Summer" (Red Fire 20 colors) Green is "Air of Spring" (Green Trees 20 colors) Yellow is "Sentiments of Autumn" (Gold Earth 20 colors) Blue is possibly "Remainder of Winter", because the character 余 means "excess, leftover", but I'm unsure if that's the right way to connect it to 冬, which is Winter. (Submerged in Water 20 colors) Black is "Way of Heaven and Earth" (Heaven 5 colors; Earth 9 colors; Human 6 colors) The character in the circle beneath "Phoenixcolor" seems to be three characters, 东飞鸟 (dōng fēi​niǎo), "Flying Bird of the East", though I'm not sure what it's referencing. The front of the boxes have a character indicating a side of the world associated with that color in the middle and an animal associated with that side of the world pictured. The name of the animal in Chinese and English is printed in the bottom left. In ancient Chinese mythology, each side of the world had an auspicious beast-protector, the color of the beast matching the color of soil in that part of China. Each beast also corresponds to a specific season and element. So the red box is "South" (南), and pictured is the Vermillion Bird of the South (it is different from the Chinese Phoenix, as the Phoenix is multicilored rather than just red, which might be why they chose the phoenix as the brand name). The Vermillion Bird, as the other beasts, is a Chinese constellation. As reflected in the box, it represents the color red, the season or summer, the element of Fire, and midday. The green box is "East" (东), and pictured is the Azure (or Blue, or Green) Dragon of the East. Its color is, of course, green, its season is spring, and it also represents the element of Wood and dawn. There are several characters meaning various shades of green and blue-green that can be used for the color in this Dragon's name, and the one used on the box is 苍 (cang), meaning a deep, ashy blue-green. The yellow box is "West" (西), and pictures is the White Tiger of the West. Contrary to the box it is used on, its color is White. Its season is autumn, its element metal and it represents dusk. The blue box is "North" (北), and pictured is the Black Tortoise of the North. The characters for its name 玄武 (xuanwu) translate to "Black/mysterious warrior", the second character being the same one used to indicate Japanese samurai. Its season winter, its element water, and its time midnight. While contrary to the box it is pictured on, its color is black, it's also worth saying that the actual character for blue (青) can sometimes mean black, so that might explain the color choice. The black box is "Center" (中). The mythological beast representing the center of the world is supposed to be either a Yellow Dragon or a Yellow Qilin (a dragon-unicorn type of mythical creature), its color being yellow (hence the yellow on the box art, I suppose), its season being midsummer and its element being Earth. However, almost none of this matches the art on the box. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to figure out what exactly the two birds are supposed to be, though the feathers on the top of their heads make them look a lot like stylized phoenixes. However, I was able to find out that the name on the box, "The Way of Heaven and Earth", is taken from a poem from the Book of Rites, one of the fundamental Confucian texts. My Chinese is, unfortunately, not good enough to understand what the poem itself is about, but the phrase "the way of heaven and earth" has since come to mean "interconncetion between Yin and Yang", or "the natural flow of the world". This being said, I assume it is safe to surmise the black and white birds represent Ying and Yang. As for the characters on the pencils themselves, you are absolutely right and they do indicate pigment names. The ones above the circled character indicate the pigment number. For example, the bright green pencil in the end of your review is 绿十一. 绿 (lǜ) is green, and 十一 (shí ​yī) is eleven, so it's Green 11. The pigment name is under the circled character, and on this one, it says 柳芽 (liǔyá), meaning "Willow Sprout". The dark green pencil behind it is 绿十一 (lǜ shí sān), so Green 13, pigment name 老竹 (lǎozhú), "Old Bamboo". From what I could make out in the video, the light green pencil you used on black paper seems to say 萌 (méng), meaning "fresh sprout", and the blue says 天青 (tiānqīng), meaning "sky blue", fitting with the cloud pattern. The white says 皓 (hào), meaning "luminous", but also used in conjunction with "white teeth of youth" or "snow-white hair you the old". From what I can tell, some of those color names are traditional color names, which have now fallen into obscurity, though I am not too sure about this. For example, the beautiful turquise-ish pencil that you showed a close up of is 秘色 (mìsè), literally translating to "secret color". It indicated a delicate jade green color, and it was the color of the glazing of Celadon porcelain, produced in China starting around 14th century BCE, and later in Japan and Korea as well. The specific proportion of iron required to make the glazing was difficult to achieve and thus a secret of the trade, hence the "secret color". In fact, if you type 秘色 into Google search, most results will show you various porcelain ware! Incidentally, this pencil's color number is 碧之九, or Jade 9. 碧 (bì) means "jade", specifically "blue-green jade", 之 (zhī) is roughly the equivalent of "of", which is why this character is all over the packaging, and 九 (jiǔ) is 9. Thanks again for the review, the beautiful artwork, and I hope you keep enjoying these pencils! And I totally agree with you, I would never want to use them as well! This whole "being a financially responsible adult" thing is really hard 😭 As to the commentary re: your personal updates... Long, rambling commentary below: As others have said, this is your channel. You get to decide how you want your videos to be, and if people don't like it they can just skip ahead. A compromise could be to leave a time stamp for when the review starts, to make it easier to skip ahead (but, honestly, people can skip ahead themselves too, it's quite a reasonable skill to expect of one's viewers). I do have to confess that I have, on occasion, been a bit concerned that perhaps your daughter might not want her personal struggles publicly talked about to the degree of detail they sometimes have been in the past, but I wasn't sure whether it would be appropriate for me to say anything (and assume that you didn't have your daughter's permission felt a bit weird, knowing how keen you always are to treat everyone kindly and respectfully - my apprehension was probably in large part a result of seeing _other_ parents online treat their children's privacy as irrelevant or nonexistent, which is something I take great issue with in re: to internet culture in general).

Thank you! Amazon Tammy has also translated the boxes, and the colours. The names and numbers are listed on the pencils, and inside the boxes. I have had mine since August, and love them. The box names, she has translated as: (green) Wood : Azure Dragon, Breath of Spring, (red) Red Fire, Rose Finch, Blooming Summer. (yellow) Gold Earth, White Tiger, Essence of Autumn; (blue) Distant Water, Black Tortoise, Out of Water. The pencils are named in colour groups, then a number. The company won a prize for design. They took 2 years to research and design the set. Each pictogram is an element of Chinese tradition....Great review. Miss your chat. Stay well. Oh, and they play well with the Nyoni's in my opinion.

Harry, I’m a relatively new pencil artist and the beginning of this video just fills me with sadness. I have been watching over the last few weeks right from the start. There is a reason people are still following you Harry and it’s your humanity. You’re not on your own when it comes to snippets of family life. Most KZbinrs do it, It forms a connection between you and us. Don’t ever stop being you mate just because a few are looking for a robot. If they don’t like it they can look elsewhere. I read the comment about the black box being the center or all of heaven and earth and that explains the mixture of blues browns etc. well explained and I have a memory of that story many years ago! Harry, Please don't stop talking about whatever you want to talk about, I would think most of us are here for you not just pencils, I don't even use coloured pencils but follow you because of you ! Your stories are what makes you real and that's why we can all relate to you so well and feel like you are a friend, We care about you and your family and would really, really hate for you to stop talking to us as you do. Some you tubers put time stamps on their videos so people can jump to the bit they are interested in, maybe that could be an option for you to keep everyone happy, then they can choose to not listen to the chatty parts that we enjoy so much.

Thank you so much Maureen, what a wonderful thing to read first thing in the morning, you really are too kind. Amelia is doing fantastic, she really is on the mend. She is at college studying dance and performing arts, because of her being such a good gymnast as a kid, she really is doing so well. She has a beautiful group of friends who all support one another and there is no bullying whatsoever. She chose a college about an hours drive away from Durham to make sure she didn’t end up in the same college as the people who almost took her life. Amelia and her older brother Jude used to be so close as toddler’s, they would everything together, Jude made her laugh all the time and that made him happy cause he thought he was hilarious. However, when Amelia’s mind had enough and completely broken down, life in our home for about a year, pretty much all of 2019, was a nightmare. Jude and Amelia drifted apart during that time and it was heartbreaking to watch. However, since Jude moved to University to study Aerospace Engineering, they have become close again. Jude has a wonderful Girlfriend who is studying Bio Chemistry and she knows about what happened to Amelia and she is so amazing to Amelia, they message each other and it has bright Jude and Amelia closer again. She still has the occasional low periods which can be a day long of just sadness or can be a few days of not wanting to be alive and those are the periods that my wife and I find the hardest. However, when she started her road to recovery, one of the things that helped her was all the beautifully inspirational comments that you guys left on my videos.Collectively you all contributed to her recovery. I owe you guys all so much, not just for the amazing support and understanding you have all shown toward me and what I am doing on The Art Gear Guide, but for all the inspirational and supportive messages left about Amelia. Those messages along with other things showed her that the world does have wonderful people in it as well as the horribly disgustingly gutter trash that enjoy causing pain and misery to others.

He's profoundly mentally disabled and, when we were wee little kids and would drive into my aunt Catherine and Uncle Eddie's house in Brooklyn from our house on Long Island, my brother and sister would be terrified of Jude because he was so much bigger and older than us, and he was also legally blind and pretty much deaf so he couldn't really communicate well or understand. Keep in mind that this was in the late '60s, early '70s. People were not as aware as they are now of what to do in situations like that, and my aunt Catherine had seven other kids. Good old Irish Catholic Brooklyn family LOL, cop for a father, stay at home mom. Rattling her rosary beads and praying that God was going to fix it all hahaha. Anyway, I loved Jude. For some reason, he always seemed to know it was me when we got there, and he would come bounding up and grab me up and hug me, and my sister would squeal and freak out thinking he was going to crush me to death like Lenny in that Steinbeck book, I thought Jude was the bee's knees LOL. He was the only one that would sit with me and play dumb little 3-year-old kid games for hours, because nobody else was 3 years old and nobody else wanted to sit with me. I was so upset when the adults finally talked my aunt Catherine into sending him someplace. I didn't see him again for like 15 years, and at that point he was so medicated he wasn't Jude anymore. Speaking from experience, I understand Amelia's pain. I was bullied most of my childhood and adolescence, it caused me to drop out of high school, and I wound up abusing drugs and alcohol and taking a really bad turn. Fortunately things turned around, but I've been where she was and I'm glad you guys supported her and she's turning things around. I also understand it from a parent's point of view because my daughter is 25 and has gone through the same thing. It does get better but there are always still some patches where things slide backward. You just have to hold on and help them get through it. I love this community, please don't change a thing about it. I'm glad you feel like we help you, I know you help us.
