Oh snap my question got answered! Thanks! to be clear i was more referencing mixing so you answered it correctly. I feel like you miss out on some saturation that other companies emulate when strictly using stock plugins.

Can you mix using only stock plug ins? Well, it depends on a couple things: The first is the style(s) of music you’re working with, and the second thing is the DAW you have and what stock/native processors it comes with. I find it difficult (though not impossible) to do using only the stock Pro Tools plugs, but in my other DAW platforms -Samplitude Pro X4 and Presonus S1 - it’s MUCH easier, because those DAW’s are more feature-rich, and come with a vast array of native processing, some of which are better than my 3rd Party plugs from Slate and Waves. The exception to all of the above, would be my Fabfilter plugs, which I have because none of my current DAW’s - or 3rd Party stuff like Slate and Waves plugs -offers the same ultra-high quality, transparent and detail-based processing that FF does. I’ve not worked in Logic, (I’m a PC guy), but I have friends and colleagues who do, and they love Logic’s stock processors/plugs. Now, perhaps Pro Tools has gotten better in the last couple years? Maybe they have gotten better in recent versions with their native plugs; but the version I have from 2016 - I think it’s 12.6... it would be difficult for what I do, and the client’s I have. As a side note, when PT 12.6 was released, it boasted “new” features, like clip effects and layered editing, and at the time I found that to be funny... considering that Samplitude Pro X had already had those features (and more) in place as “standard issue” in their platform for several years.

I would add a question: your energy drink on the right, is it a Monster and is that part of your secret weapons? 😂😂😂 Maybe you should promote it, and get paid by them to drink it in your videos haha! Definitely very good to get all these answers condensed in a single video. The point about musical rights would also be my question for a future video. As a mastering guy, I would love sometimes to make deals with some artists (especially the ones I work with for a long time with whom I have an amazing complicity, we form more a team than a client/mastering guy relationship) to share the streaming and sales revenues for a song uploaded to Spotify and other platforms for example, including KZbin. How can I handle all this the right way and register the music "legally properly"? I already use revenues sharing on DistroKid but there is nothing registered outside of DistroKid. So I guess these artists could stop sharing the revenues at any time if they decide to. Considering that I am in Canada and that other artists can be in any other part of the world, how can I handle this? Also a point that interests me a lot is about the KZbin Content ID. Is it required, or not, and can multiple artists monetize a song if they make different videos with the same audio and they each publish it on their respective channels, etc.... Let me know if I am out of topic for your channel too, maybe my questions are going too far. I made several researches regarding this and don't find anything clear! Knowing that all your videos and responses are clear, I take the chance to ask you the questions haha! Thanks for this time, so clear explanations! Loving your responses at 15:55 about how to build a clients base. There are so many engineers that will never progress from a business perspective because they are not ready for this sacrifice of working for free for quite some time. Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏👍😁🌠

Hey David. Got 2 questions for ya. 1. When bussing Drums for example, to an Aux Reverb track , do you mirror the pans? As in if you have Hihats panned left in the mix do you then pan the send left or just leave it in the stereo default setting? 2. If you are sending Mastered tracks to clients do you send just 24 Bit or do you include 16 Bit? I am currently sending Loud 24 Bit and 16 Bit Masters, Moderate 24 Bit and 16 Bit Masters for streaming and the Unmastered and it a getting to be a pain. Do you know of a good site or free software I could just send them a link to so if they need 16 Bit version they can just convert them themselves? Thanks!
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
if you're sending the single elements yes, I would mirror the pan, you can try to experiment but unless we're talking weird effects and experimental genres, you want to mirror. I send 24bit and 16bit, I don't send any quiet/loud version other than my final master unless I"m required specifically a lower level version. I use RX to convert so it I export my master at high SR and 32bit (I pitch and catch) and then convert with RX, it takes 2 seconds to convert in both bit depth/SR. I wouldn't let your clients convert SR and/or bit rate, it's your job to provide that and if they mess up the conversion and your master sound like ass it's gonna be your name so, I wouldn't take chances and do it myself

Can you explain your concept regarding 2-buss/master buss processing and your effect sends? If you mix top-down, through a 2-buss comp. Do your verbs/delays/etc also go through that or are they bussed somewhere else when printing?

What is your cleanup approach for a live vocal mic with *severe* cymbal bleed that comes and goes (not quite constant noise) where re-recording is not an option? Let´s keep this Q&A going!
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
Cymbals on vocals is something that literally never happened to me, but I'd probably go with Izotope RX, if anything can save such recording, that would be the only thing.

hey David, i mix my bands material, when i compare my band sound with reference tracks on the analyzer my band seems always to have a deep at 600-900hz range (drums,guitar,bass,female vocal) we like the sounds we achieve prior tracking, should i compensate with eq on single tracks or hole mix or something is wrong with are ears?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
That is a pretty wide area, amd and you should have quite some energy in there with the instruments listed, it would be better to fix at the recording stage but if you can't, then of course single tracks

Hi what plugins are in your typical vocal chain, i hear a lot people saying you should use two compressors , one on fast attack, the other to smooth overall level, and where in the chain do you put EQ plugin before or after compressors, thanks
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
No you shouldn't, but you can. Not a rule by any stretch, that's just one of the many ways. Usually I eq first with SSL waves channel G, after that there could be a deesser first or straight into comp, I use hardware usually, so either Distressor for aggressive vocals or 2A or 3A or Mimas (1176), if plugin I default a lot on CLA76 or MJUC, more eq after, usually a saturator too and filters. From there there's usually one parallel and a load of effects (sends) and lead + all doubles go to a summing bus where there can be more processing, a dynamic eq (Nova) or Multiband compressors (C6 or Fab filter), a final wide band compression also could be there and a sweetening eq. Automation is key tho no matter how many plug-in you throw at it.

do you ever use compression on master, if yes i assume with very low ratios?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
If you mean compression while mixing, on the whole mix, my 2buss chain is well documented on the channel and online, I mix into Wes Audio Dione as compressor (not the only thing), 4:1 ratio and it can be anything from 1 to 6db of compression. Totally different thing from compression in mastering, which is usually a lot less, or none at all
