I'm a 70's musician who's Baltimore mother slammed the door in my face when I came off the road from LA. (Vert. stripped bells, CTA purple T-shirt, sandals, and a natural white boy afro.). This being said; you've out done my uncompromising look. 😎 I am a big fan of your tutorial quality, and I applaud your uncluttered, and direct explanations. Thanks for offering yourself to the arts, and keep it coming !

Another fantastic review. As a home mixer on my own stuff, I'm no where near as experienced as David. I was initially thinking it was maybe too complex for me but then thought, if I use the presets and analyze, I could do even basic adjustments and it would sound excellent. Also, this is the first time I noticed the difference between the sound of the mix being adjusted and the sound of your voice. It was like a constant enabled/disabled comparison. This plugin sounds amazing. Thank you!

Wonderful review and demonstration of this incredible new tool from Sonible. Thank you for that David. This is truly breathtaking to use. I'm I right in saying that this replaces any de-essing tool there is. I've tried it and it's so brilliant and smooth for de-essing. It also in my mind replaces WaveFactory trackspacer. I am absolutely blown away by what Sonible have done here. Thanks for an interesting demonstration

That's a great indepth review. With this extra ordinary compressor you showed your knowledge you gained over the years in mixing. I enjoyed your excitement. Sonible is one of the view innovating brands in the plugin scene. But it only makes sense in the hands of experienced mixers.

They’ve made a great plugin by doing what digital does best without trying to emulate analog. I love the amount of control you have in this. This’ll find it’s use in a studio setup with all the analog you’d need, while also being quite ahead in reference of just in the box. I can see this being my bread and butter in a DAW now and after I expand. I could get the absolute most out of the analog units I’d like if I could balance things like this of specific tracks or buses. It might even find it’s way pre or post analog in a master… maybe not post out of fear, but would definitely check if that fear is rational or not if I get a chance.

This is the vid I was waiting for! Got it yesterday and man, the saturator really surprised me. Same as you, dunno if it's the same as the one on the limiter but, if it is, it's better implemented here and far more usable.

Sonible is crushing it. Smart Limit was the first True Peak limiter I liked the sound of in that mode. Now literally every feature of Smart Comp sounds useful to me, contained within a really intuitive interface. Even the saturation sounds great! What?? Didn’t see this coming and I’m here for it.

Thanks for the heads up David! I didn't know this got released. Between a sale and loyalty discount, I got it for round 50 bucks! Gave it a try on my main mix. 100 spectral. fully clean. universal mode. 3db max compression. It was super transparent. : ) I found the color setting to be very subtle on my material, which is good. The "dirty" setting didn't sound dirty, just more loud/aggressive, which is also good. Seems amazing for master work but I can't wait to try it on individual instruments also. Especially ones with really spiky harsh transients/overtones that are always a pain to tame without over processing the take. I dare say this is probably going to be the best multi-pressor I've used to date.

Haha you can tell you're genuinely excited reviewing this :) Seems to me the spectral comp feature is more just something to help balance out particularly off-balanced input sources, in order to make the compressor work less (hence less pumping). Not to be used on everything, only if the compressor is pumping unnaturally

Just something to note: The Free-form Transfer Function and Level Histogram... deal with levels not frequencies. From about 21:28 in the video, your mention the grid is showing frequency ranges, but it is actually showing levels. The way the mid-expansion works in this compressor is sort of like upward compression. VERY nice! I have more control over this than, say, Waves MV2, which I happen to love and used for years. Great overall presentation on this amazing compressor, though, thanks for all that you do! *** From page 13 of the manual about the "expand mid" function: "Expand Mid Here we’ve chosen the ‘Expand Mid’ Template, changing how smart:comp 2 handles levels below the set threshold. The loudest signal parts are being compressed (just as before), signals between the threshold and the second thumb are expanded and signals below the lower threshold are compressed again. This mapping is also indicated by the spacings of the Compression Grid."

Man I fucking love how you put this all out. I couldn't really hear a LOT of difference, a bit borderline superficial on that first mix, but a busy mix like the rock one really gave me a perspective about where this could possibly go on some more lush pop songs I mix. Also, we twinning with that "I either compress, don't compress or create a send", because, me too. I've never seen a point in dry/wet knobs.

Even without the automatic setting (or "AI") it's a really superb compressor. The spectral processing makes it sound great for basically any material you throw at it, and it really does work better than a multi-band comp in many situations! The added expander/gate/upwards compression feature, spectral link and dark/bright/style settings for the spectral processing makes it a completely different beast compared to version 1. All I can say is; Bravo, Sonible! You absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one. It reminds me of Pro Audio DSP's Dynamic Spectrum Mapper, which I believe works in the same way (FFT-based compression), but instead of AI-controlled parametrization it has a mode for capturing the overall frequency response of a mix or track which it then applies to the material you are working on. It's also a great plug-in, but Smart:Comp feels much easier to work with, is super light on CPU and has much more functionality.

David, you know you could dial in a better compression setup than this does, and in half the time. Don't get me wrong, I think this could be a very interesting teaching tool. And I do applaud the developers who are trying to push the envelope with these A.I. type tools. Unfortunately in the end I find these sorta tools to be either a rabbit hole that leads you in the wrong direction, or a distraction to what's most important. You spend more time having too correct what sounds questionable, versus just using your ears and nailing it.

This is how I felt about most “AI Suggestion” stuff too. I remember messing with Neutron and it was a joke. Complete time waster using the AI. But Sonible’s stuff hits different. The quality of the suggestions is better but mainly it’s the fluidity of control over what’s suggested that makes it useful to me. It’s like having an assistant prep a track according to a reference and then you can quickly make the aesthetic choices you deem ideal for the material and dial things in. It’s like a second opinion when you need one but ultimately it’s still within your control. For example: every time I insert an 1176 on a bass track, I start from the same settings and then dial it to tempo and material and taste. Something like this just gives that starting point, while also providing features other comps simply don’t have all in one place.
@engmix

@@mrnelsonius5631 I do appreciate your perspective, and can understand where you're coming from. For me, I've been making records for well over 20 years. Maybe I'm just being old-school on this one? In the end, it's just compression or limiting or both, we're not landing the space shuttle. It's really not that deep. And don't get me wrong. I'm someone with about 20 pieces of outboard gear, and own way more plugins than I need to. I love geeking out on the tools. But for me this sorta thing is just geeking out in the wrong direction. @@engmix at the end of the day, it’s all about what tools inspire us and get us the results we’re after fastest. I’ve made records (as an artist/writer) in renowned studios, and I’ve produced commercial tracks on my laptop. I vastly prefer the analog rich studios! But no one wants to give the budget for it anymore. There’s no wrong way in my opinion if it gets you where you want to be. I’m in the in-between school: professionally I’ve kind of been forced into the mostly ITB world because I’m also a touring musician. But I also know the magic of purpose built outboard tools in a purpose built environment because I used to record that way exclusively. Happy music making my friend, however we choose (or have to 🙃) to do it :)
@engmix
@engmix Жыл бұрын
@@mrnelsonius5631 I fully agree that it's whatever inspires the best end result. I don't think I said this new tool is a wrong way, but if that's how it came off, that wasn't my intention. it looks to me like an overly complicated way, and a way where one can be easily led in the wrong direction. One of the reasons why La-2a's to 1176's etc...are so coveted, is due to it's immediate and simplistic workflow. And again don't get me wrong, I use tools like Shaper Box and other complex tools. I never thought I would say this, but I actually prefer my current hybrid workflow to working on tape and large format consoles. My current studio has been the most enjoyable to date, and that's accounting for some of the 6-7 figure studios I used to work in. I also recognize that we're in a new realm of the profession. It's been great to have the analog gear in my racks, but I would be FKD without my cpu based digital tools. For the most part I don't want to spend more than 3 minutes eq'ing and compressing anything, because after that my perspective is probably heading in the wrong direction. I think as these tools get further refined, they will be unquestionably useable. These are my humble opinions, I'm by no means the God of audio. Glad to see your busy working and having success. I started out and stayed an engineer and eventually becoming a producer / engineer. I built my studio for both budget minded indie projects, but can also host full-on high expectation label projects as well. Appreciate the chat, be well :)

I am not an audio engineer or anything close. I am just a hobbyist beginner. But I am a highly regarded professional in my real life job, so do understand these back/forth discussions between you guys. In every profession there are new things come to practice that tend to question and revolutionize prior practices. We, old-schoolers, tend to be resistant to these movements because we think what we have established over the years give the best results. This is partly correct and partly wrong. Generations change and new things are adopted, and the new generation does not learn what the past generation learned, so the older practices become obsolete and new things become standard. This seems unfortunate as some strong fundamentals will be forgotten but on the other side new horizons open. I understand both of you. I am an old-schooler in my profession, but remember the days that I, as a newbie, had same discussions with my mentors.

I appreciate your time, effort and enthusiasm but a shit / boring song is still a shit / boring song and most of these changes are so subtle that to the vast majority of consumers the changes are undiscernable - except perhaps in a club environment, where the most minute of changes at the sub end of things can make a significant difference to how the thing sounds. The tools for audio engineering, producing and mixing get better and better and yet at the same time the quality of the music being pumped out at the end of the sausage making machine is getting shittier and shittier!
