Man this video is a miracle. Direct monitoring has bugged me for some time and I feel more confident turning on direct monitoring and routing either a stereo audio with reverb in my project window (which I didn't know, thank you so much) or option 2 in my zoom L12 livetrak add reverb to give the singer some effects on her headphones during recording knowing it will only be dry signal recorded which I'm aware off anyway (why didn't I think of the adding of reverb from my audio interface, so thank you again) after watching this video just boosted my knowledge and skills. Great stuff Chris! Coincidentally I just worked this stuff out last week for my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 using their Focusrite Control software to add Direct Monitoring on to any input and I used Cue2 to give some reverb to the performers headphones. This works great, the only compromise being using punch-in (in tape machine recording mode) when the singer is singing along to the part already recorded before the punchin point, they will hear the latency doubling effect until punch-in when they only hear their direct signal and the reverb. I suppose there’s no way around this other than your first option of low sample rate.
@mixdownonline3 жыл бұрын
I never use Tape Machine Style Monitoring when working with an interface that has no Cubase DM support. Keep the recording mode to Manual. Doesn't matter much, the signer will just hear himself during Playback, no big deal :) And by keeping the recording mode to Manual, activate your Reverb channel's Monitor so it always stays active.

Hi Chris, my reverb is on an FX channel and FX channels have no monitor button so I couldn't do your suggestion (unless I misundertood you), however I noticed the main shortcoming of my setup is on playback before punch-in, the singer in Cue2 headphones only hears the wet reverb signal and not the dry signal but I found a workaround from parts of suggestions from the Steinberg Cubase forum by activating/recording simultaneously on 2 audio channels as follows in manual record mode as follows: 1st audio channel : input 1 (mic), monitor OFF (only plays back recorded signal), Cue 2 (headphones) ON, Send to FX ON. 2nd audio channel :input 1 (mic), monitor ON (only monitors signal being recorded), Cue 2 (headphones) OFF, Send to FX ON. FX reverb channel has Cue2 (headphones) ON of course to hear the wet reverb signal.. Now the singer hears the playback audio dry & wet signal via 1st audio channel and their singing direct from Focusrite Scarlett direct monitorin outside of Cubase, but also wet signal via Cubase from 2nd audio channel. It's a bit of extra hassle but not much for a perfect session. Just have to delete the 2nd audio track (or just events/parts) after finished recording. Hope that helps others with only outboard direct monitoring!

That was a good technical video with a lot of good information. I worked before with a Presonus interface and could do the trick about mix direct with processed signal, for example to add reverb to a voice at recording (you mentioned the old video where you show that). Since a couple of months I have a UR-RT4, that you mention at 13:12. I am glad you confirm here that, when working with direct monitoring, you can add effects from the DSP (that works very well) but NOT from the DAW. I had tried all kind of tricks, working with FX channels, sends, duplicated channels, hiring wizards, throwing spells, and so on, without success. I wanted, for example, add delay or similar, but to do that I need to disable the direct monitoring function. It is a very nice interface, though. What good is too, is that, if I send signal to a cue mix and this is routed to outputs 3 and 4 (Mix 2), the direct monitoring works too.

I'm using a UR28M in my project studio and a UR44 for portable recordings. These actually allow the DSP EQ and Compressor functions to be part of the recorded signal. The Rev-X reverb is only available for monitoring and that's OK because I wouldn't normally want to record reverb but rather add it later. It is great however for the vocalist because they can tweak it as they like and it wont become part of the recorded take. Take care.

Hello, thank you for your video. When recording a vocal i monitor the direct sound of the mic into the soundcard mixer (antelope) where i mix the mic direct sound and the cue mix coming from cubase. I would like to be able to send the previous vocal recording of the track until i am punching but not when i am in the punch section without having to turn it off in the cue section of the track. Otherwise the singer ears it twice and with a delay: from the direct sound of the soundcard mixer and thru the cue with latency. I also want to hear in my control room when punching. Is there a function in cubase where when in punch-in mode (or even record on existing track) the monitoring is automatically cut in the cue only and not in the control room. And of course i don’t want to use another track for the punch, i want to do the punch in the same track. Of course if you have ultra low latency you do every thing in cubase using tape style monitoring in preferences (but i have to much latency even at minimum buffer size). How do you manage this issue with your sound card (that doesn’t have direct monitoring option from cubase) ? If you have any explanation or video link, you are welcome.Thank you

With the Steinberg UR interface you will get an additional panel on top in mixer called "hardware". On the right, it has a tiny 3way routing switch for inserting a real time compressor / EQ and a send for an internal reverb, which is a shared send for all directly monitered tracks. You get to choose whether you record the compressor / eq on the track or just use it during monitoring.

@Am6-93 жыл бұрын
It is worth noting that if you monitor through Cubase, plugins in the signal path (from the channel to master and control room) can add additional latency on top of the interface buffer. Especially things like limiters on the master channel or e.g. Sonarworks in linear phase mode in control room. The solution is to either disable (not only bypass) those manually or hit the “constrain delay compensation “ button in the toolbar which will disable all plugins with a latency higher than n milliseconds, where n is a value you can set in Preferences->VST->delay compensation threshold.

@svenisaksson39703 жыл бұрын
@@kdcyp No, I don't believe they do. Note that the term Direct Monitoring can be a bit tricky. It's a generic term for a specific kind of monitoring. But it's also a feature in Cubase. Just because a manufacturer says that their interface has direct monitoring doesn't mean that it compatible with Steinbergs implementation. For example, MOTU says that my 828es is capable of Direct Monitoring (and it is, with MOTU software), but it's not compatible with Steinbergs implementation (the Direct Monitoring checkbox is greyed out). This is important to keep in mind when choosing an audio interface, if DM is important to you. Perhaps someone whith access to a Focusrite interface can check if their implementation is compatible with Cubase (the Direct Monitoring checkbox is NOT greyed out).

Very important subject. You're missing one vital point, though! How do you use your "non-direct monitor compliant interface" method with Tape Machine Style Monitoring. The problem is that this mode automatically turn on the "Monitor" button on the channel when you punch in recording or stop playback! So, the method you describe won't work with the Tape Machine Style Monitoring mode. I've been wrestling with this for quite a while. I'm using a MOTU 828es interface. It's an excellent interface, but i doesn't support DM. As far as I know, only Steinberg interfaces do. Although, according to Greg Ondo, there's no thechnical reason why other manufactures can't support DM too. Only the N.I.H. syndrome.

I never use Tape Machine Style Monitoring when working with an interface like the EVO8 which has no Cubase DM support. Keep the recording mode to Manual. Doesn't matter much, the signer will just hear himself during Playback, no big deal :)

@@mixdownonline I (and many others) ALWAYS use Tapemachine Style moitoring, as it's the only workable way. Perhaps you never need to do punch ins. Then I'm envious of the quality of musicians you have the privilidge of working with.

@@svenisaksson3970 Don't get me wrong, I love Tape Machine style when monitoring through Cubase or with Cubase's Direct monitoring active, but if I'm recording from an interface that doesn't support Cubase's Direct Monitoring, Manual mode is the way to go and will do the job even for punch ins etc, did this in several recording situations with clients in the past 18 years. With that said, if this is not workable for you, I would suggest you sell your Focurite and get a Steinberg UR-C24 Interface, it's support Direct monitoring and has DSP Fx for monitoring, it's seriously a good option.

@@mixdownonline Well, I beg to differ. 1. I don't use a Focusrite interface. I use a MOTU 828es. 2. The reason I use an 828es is that Steinberg ruined my MSR-816 by sending out malware that was masqurading as a driver update. 3. I wouldn't touch any Steinberg hardware, with a ten foot pole! As far as I'm concerned the Steinberg UR-C24, or any Steinberg interface i a piece of junk! You never know when Steinberg will brick it in a feeble attempt to force you to buy a new one!

@@svenisaksson3970 I understand your frustration. Just so you know, I've been working with Steinberg Hardware for years and never had a problem. Sorry you had problems with them :(

What about using compensation delay available in cubase?
@rolandgerard60643 жыл бұрын
It disables all the effects and insert/send plugins, not always handy.
@mixdownonline3 жыл бұрын
That can be useful if you already have a bunch of plugins in your session. Cubase compensates by delaying all the other channels so all channels stay in sync. Constrain Delay Compensation will turn off all the plugins that generate delay, so you can record with a minimal delay Compensation effect. I will make a video next week on this with a good example to show up :-)
@diegoalejo153 жыл бұрын
@@rolandgerard6064 no it doesn´t, you just have to modify delay compensation threshold in preferences to a value over 0 and voilá
