isn't the the result in the 2nd conditional in the future ?
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 2 ай бұрын
That depends on the verb. If a state verb is used, it refers to the present. If I were rich, I'd buy a house. - 'be' is a state verb. If I were rich now. If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house. - 'win' is an action verb. If I won the lottery in the future.

Madam, what are the key words to change into mixed conditional.
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Balu, can you clarify what you mean by 'key words'? I can't think of any specific word that changes. You can spot a mixed conditional when you see elements of the second and third conditionals combined. We only use mixed conditionals when we are describing an unreal situtation. We use the second conditional to describe an unreal present situation and the third conditional to describe an unreal past situation. We mix them when we want to describe an unreal present condition with an unreal past result, or an unreal past condition with an unreal present result.

Madam, how can we change by 2nd and 3rd conditional into mixed conditional
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 2 жыл бұрын
@@balukommu9505 You mix conditionals by combining the 2nd conditional 'if clause' with the 3rd conditional 'main clause', or the 3rd conditional 'if clause' with the 2nd conditional 'main clause'. Third conditional - if clause = unreal past + main clause = unreal past. If I had got up earlier, I wouldn’t have been tired this morning. Second conditional - if clause = unreal present + main clause = unreal present If I slept more, I wouldn’t always be tired. Mixed conditional - if clause = unreal past + main clause = unreal present If I had got up earlier, I wouldn’t be tired now. Mixed conditional - if clause = unreal present + main clause = unreal past If I weren’t always tired, I wouldn’t have got up late this morning.

@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 2 жыл бұрын
don't forget to use 'the' with USA. ...I would go to the USA. Other countries that use 'the' are the Netherlands, the UK, the Sudan, the Gambia, the Philippines, the Bahamas. This is because we generally use 'the' with republics, kingdoms and island groups. However, there are exceptions.

is it still a good way to teach conditionals in several different types like this, since essentially there are mainly 2 types of conditional constructions: the open conditional and the remote conditional
@EnglishWithEm
@EnglishWithEm 9 ай бұрын
Unless you are into linguistics, 'open' and 'remote' are not terms you generally come across, and they can be very confusing for learners. The majority of learners who get to the point of studying mixed conditionals have already learned the zero, first, second, and third, so I think it's helpful for them to continue to use them. The idea of remoteness was intended to highlight the fact that the past simple can be used to indicate both the past and unreality. The idea was proposed to show the difference between 'conditionals' that don't fit the traditional zero, first, second, third paradigm. For example (from 'The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language', by Rodney Huddleston and Geoffrey K. Pullum): If he was surprised, he didn't show it. (open - use of 'was' not 'were') If he were surprised, he wouldn't show it. (remote) However, I have a problem with this because the open one, which some people would call a mixed conditional, is not what I would consider a true conditional. The 'if clause' really means 'whether or not he was surprised' and the result is not dependent on the condition.
@franksu
@franksu 9 ай бұрын
@@EnglishWithEm yes you're absolutely correct. I personally prefer to use the "real" and "unreal" types (which somewhat can be considered equivalent to those two technical terms), because after all, what students need to learn is the tense shift, in other words, why the verbs have to change. The division into 0, 1, 2, 3 and mixed doesn't really give them the essence of what we call hypothetical, a concept that several languages don't realize. In the book you mentioned, there are even sentences like "if she doesn't come tomorrow, then we were wasting our time preparing for the surprise party". "if" in "if he was surprised, he didn't show it" means "when", that's why you don't see any condition here. Anyway, the information you provide in each of your videos really shows how remarkable your grasp of the language is! This I rarely see from the other teachers on KZbin! Great job!
