I have and love those markers too.Thanks a lot for many great tips pertaining to liquids for disolving the marker pigment. I would never have tried gesso or matte medium if you hadn't suggested it. Just proves how important it is to play and experiment with art supplies. Your highlight trick with the kitchen paper roll cracked me up - quick, easy, and efficient. Slam! 😄🤭👍💪🤩

I love using water brushes so I can easily paint eith my watercolor markers anywhere I am! I keep it by my bed so I can easily easily paint without the mess! Also I find it easier to blend when I use watercolor markers in sections so I can blend while it's still wet. Makes them work beautifully that way.

you can scribble some of the watercolor marker on a palette and then transfer the color to the paper with your brush. It’s also a great method to mix new colors if you don’t have the exact color you want. I have a small one from Caran D’Ache that has both a smooth and a textured side. I use that palette also with my Faber Castell watercolor pencils and my Derwent Inktense pencils. Works awesome!

There are brands of clear gesso that aren't grainy. Liquitex has the most grain. TCW Clear Gesso (The Crafter's Workshop) has no grain. Art Basics makes one in a tub also but after two tubs, the third was really thick and did not dry clear. It had a pastie finish. I hope that helps.

Thanks!!! I definitely have not tried them so appreciate the tip!!

Hi Karen, can you use odorless thinner to blend like you do with color pencils?
@KarenCampbellArtist2 жыл бұрын
So Odorless Thinner is specifically used for oil based products and these markers are all waterbased so it’s unnecessary. You’d want to use an acrylic medium or just water (or Mod Podge or any adhesive or medium that marries with waterbased products). I hope that helps!

Hi Karen, I'm just joining Mixed Media Society because I LOVED Celtic Collective so much. Can you tell me - about watercolor markers - how do you get them not to pill? I have the Faber Castellls as well and love that they're high quality and I believe lightfast. I don't want to ruin them or the paper though. Any tips? *I mean for direct to paper with the markers, not in mixed media?
@KarenCampbellArtist3 ай бұрын
I’ve actually never had pilling. My suspicion is that it’s your paper. Paper is everything! What paper are you using?

The neck and ear and hairline white gaps were a no for me. Im definitely too much of a perfectionist for those markers because they dont blend out well at all!! and i have an absolote block against anything acylic coming into my house with my grandkids around and my expensive watercolor brush collection. I woke up at 6am once to a 4yr old and a 6yr old painting with my davinci maestro brushes and my daniel smith watercolors. And i asked how they got them i heard how the oldest stood on a bar stool. You just had me cancel that amazon order. Ill stick with my watercolors. And pencil drawing.

As artists, we can't be afraid to make mistakes because we learn from them. @Sugah69 I too, among many people, can let fear stand in the way of enjoying art. There are times I take my supplies and go crazy with them to combat that fear. I set it aside, look at it, sometimes days later, and like it much more than when I originally painted/drew whatever the case may be. Having fun with the medium is what it is all about. I tell myself while I'm painting, etc., this is for me and if no one ever sees it or likes it, I'm ok with that. You are not alone. Thanks for this tutorial! Love listening to you while you paint. "It's all about the swoosh" love it.
