I love both paintings, first one has a magical feel to it. Can almost see little people walking around on the beach below, and I can swear I smell the ocean air. The second painting feels softer to me, like i want to take a short nap in the sun while laying on the beach (not too long, dont want to get sunburned).

This looks so beautiful, Helen! I love the abstractness of your first painting it, really. I tend to go into more detail when I have small brushes (in your case the acrylic pens). Big sticks or crayons are a good way to avoid that.

The first one has a tropical feel to it. I love the second one. The third one is very moody and dynamic. Nice video. Greetings from Irvine, California

Ooooooh, nice colour palette for your second painting. Love the abstractness (must be a word cos it's not been underlined in red 👍🏻) of this painting and I totally get what you're saying about the ability to find a way to give up the control. I think my problem with this is my inner child wanting to prove to people that I CAN do realism and painting anything other than this will result in people thinking I'm not a "proper" artist. Do you get what I mean? Anyhoo, I think your second painting was fab, moody and quite Turneresque to be honest. I'd put a mat on that and frame it for sure. Sending you all the best from hot and sticky Newcastle 😎 (Also, on a side note, I'm v jealous of your Holbein AcrylaGouache set. I've had this on my Amazon and Jackson's wishlist for so long. I don't even know why because I don't really paint in gouache. I just love all the colours, the packaging etc etc. I'm such a chump 😆).

Yes, I totally get what you mean! If I show people some of my more abstract stuff, then I feel like I need to show them my more realistic stuff too! I fell for the Acryla Gouache prettiness too, but they are really nice. You could always just buy the white and colour it with watercolour, if you want to try it out. Do you have any Flashe paints? I have both, but would probably just go for Flashe paints if I was starting again.

@@helencryer Yes Helen but adding watercolour would take all the fun out of having all that fabulous Holbein packaging goodness 😆. And I do have Flashe paints because I watched you playing with them and couldn't resist. However could only get hold of the starter set and the price is stupid here in Australia so I'm thinking the AcrylaGouache is still calling my name!

It can be surprisingly hard to let go of representative form. I struggle with it myself. I recently ordered some Marabu paint sticks (at great expense 😱on sale but even so 😭). They haven’t arrived yet but I’m planning to do some semi-abstract with them. Curious to see how they go with cold wax.

Hullo Helen, I have thought of acrylic gouache as a bit of a scam. Acrylic paints can be flat or gloss depending on the pigments. I have used a mat, gloss, semi gloss, satin mediums to keep a cohesive finish for the surface of my acrylic paintings. I appreciate your use and range of us3 of these medium.

I've never really used mediums - I suppose from my perspective I like immediacy, and don't want to have the added step of mixing in mediums. I've actually had my Holbein Acryla Gouaches quite a few years now, and bought them before I bought any regular acrylic paints. Their consistency also feels more ready to use than my regular acrylics - they aren't as thick, but still pigmented.

Like the plants in the Gouache sketch but, liked 2 nd sketch also. Not so keen on the colours. Fascinated with the sketch you get from photo, I‘ve tried to copy your style mine is too exact! Thanks

I don't have any gouache yet. Can you explain the difference between acrylic gouache, designer gouache and artists gouache please? If I buy a few tubes I don't want to upgrade later. I don't use markers. Thanks
@helencryer
@helencryer Ай бұрын
I'm not 100% sure the difference between artists and designer's (I think traditionally it might have been their lightfastness - the designer's gouache didn't need to be), but acrylic gouache is different from the other two in that once it dries it can't be re-activated (in the same way as acrylic paint), whilst still staying matte.
