Thank you for giving such a good thorough explanation! I am primarily a watercolor artist, occasionally I do mixed media (without collage). I have recently been experimenting with collage by tearing sections of my own paintings to collage onto other paintings. So basically a way to salvage paintings I didn’t love by removing the areas that I do love and sticking them into a whole new environment. I think the info you have given here will be a great help!😉👍🏼

I have just discovered your channel and I love your process! I don’t get why you are discouraging oils and alcohol based products though? Is it because they are not lightfast? I love to use oil pastels and neocolonial 1s and I’m wondering where they would go. Thanks for explaining everything so clearly and for reminding us that art is about playing not about being perfect.
@bodyofhope
@bodyofhope 3 жыл бұрын
Same here! I definitely wouldn't use oil paints, but use oil pastels as an early mark making layer, and my oil based metallic pens go on top of the acrylics at the very very end.... although she would probably have issues when it comes to her modge podge layering which I haven't tried. I just use a sealer spray at the end instead. I don't love the way modge podge (even the matte version) gives my work a uniform plastic finish. Personally, I love to see all the different textures popping through- bc that's a big part of my love of mixed media lol But I understand it's a protective measure. If you have mediums you love using, keep experimenting with them and you'll figure out how they work together best. Every single piece is a new learning experience! ❤
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 2 жыл бұрын
Because oils don’t mix with anything waterbased, you can only put them on top. And alcohol markers can eat through acrylics. There are a zillion ways to do mixed media, I’m only advising against them for this one way. Hope that helps!

No joke!!! I was just searching the internet the other day trying to figure out a very simple order of operations. Those water soluble crayons/ pencils slightly stump me sometimes. Firstly I want to say I've really enjoyed your hamburger series so far I looking forward to completing my first art painting soon. Quick question but on the first layer of the system is there an alternative to matte medium? Would water down Elmer's Glue Glue All be good to use? I know I can't used mod podge matte|gloss because that's a sealer type when using acrylic paint. So what's a good alternative to matte medium gel|liquid (golden/liquitex etc.) I'm using watercolor paper, copy paper and mixed media journal with acrylic paints, diy gesso|textured paste, watercolor paint, stamps, stencils, sharpie markers and decorative tissue paper for starters.
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 2 жыл бұрын
Sure! Great question! Pretty much an acrylic medium you can use as an alternative to Matte Medium. Matte or Gloss Gel works great. Watered down glue is kinda the same as Mod Podge so I wouldn’t use it for that for the same reasons (mainly just being that acrylic mediums are specifically MADE to hang out in, under and over paint whereas glue is just glue - works best just under. That being said, at the end of the day there’s no mixed media police so you can always feel free to throw around supplies as you like!

If you want to SAVE the collage layer that’s there you can use clear Gesso over the whole thing if want to keep parts of it exposed but still paint a foreground subject on it. If you want to redo the collage part first you can also do that but I’d recommend matte or gloss liquid or gel medium instead! Just works better with the paint on top! I hope that all makes sense!

Hi friend! Perfectionism can be hard to overcome! I recommend practicing learning when your mind stops responding positively to making fixes, if that makes sense! You can (I like Americana Spray Sealer) but don't use hairspray, I just read last week that the chemicals can break down your products, so use a proper art sealant if you go that route, and make sure it's one you can work over (so just read your labels and you should be fine!). Hope that helps!

Hello Karen! I'm enjoying watching these videos and playing around with mixed media! Thank you! I have a problem that maybe you can help with. I painted my canvas with acrylic paint. It dried over night so that I can put my paper design on top. When I affix the paper to the painted canvas with liquitex matte medium it picks up the color of the canvas. Then I have a light coat of the paint over the paper making it look dull. What am I doing wrong...any tips? Thank you!

When you say it “picks up the color of the canvas” do you mean it’s picks up the paint color? If it’s acrylic it definitely should not move AT ALL when you layer anything on top of it. What paint is it?

HI! I am new to your page and I love how much information you have shared about mixed media art!! I just recently started journaling and this video has been sooooo helpful! I did have a question, would you ever use watercolor paints using this hamburger method and if so would it go in the paint layer? Also, would you prep the page with gesso still. I am thinking this method is all based on using acrylics, but just wanted to ask and if you did use watercolors how would you go about that? Hope this makes sense. Thanks
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Nope, I don’t use watercolors in the burger! The whole point is that the acrylics give a Rock solid foundation that aren’t going to budge when you add the sealant layer! Watercolors are awesome and can totally be used in lots of mixed media projects but the burger is a bit too aggressive for it! Hope that helps!!

Okay, so I'm def gonna try out mixed media now 😍 I only have one question - I have alot of products that are not water soluble - like alcohol based markers and wax/oil based pencils. Are there someway you could incorporate those elements in the process, or is it just a big no-no? And what happens if you DO use them? :) Thanks for a great video, I subscribed for more 😊
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 4 жыл бұрын
That is a really awesome question. Alcohol markers are awesome as a base layer and work well UNDER color pencils but aren't really cut out for mixed media work, sadly. Oil based products are the opposite, they work best on TOP of acrylic and other layers as the very last layer. I feel your pain, I hoard all sorts of art supplies (especially alcohol markers, I must have a collection of thousands) but I keep them to themselves. It's okay, their feelings aren't hurt for too long and they are so positively luscious all by themselves!!!

So I’ve been drawn into all the other videos after watching this one, but I have a question... what does the alcohol ink in markers react to? I’m trying to find a way to incorporate them, but I’m not sure why they aren’t good to mix with these products...I understand oil reacts to the sealant but how do you use alcohol markers with water based mediums? Or at least where would they go in the layers if I just used paper and markers?
@KarenCampbellArtist
@KarenCampbellArtist 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! From what I’ve learned is that the alcohol inks can eat through the acrylic layers. However, you can totally use them with water based mediums and they’re super fun! For example I use Copics to color tons of drawings (you can see what I mean in a recent series on my drawing channel bit.ly/whimsicalwomen ) but when you use a Fineliner with them, reach for one that is water based and you won’t have streaking! They water based and alcohol inksnfont interact at all, so cool! And obviously you can put alcohol markers UNDER quite a few supplies from inks to pastels to colored pencils, graphite but yeah, not recommended in the Burger!!! So stear clear of mixing it with paints and sealants and you’re good!!
