I left the Army 8 years ago this March. I battle with this at my civilian job all the time. At the end when you said “Words mean things”, I about jumped bc I say this all the time when preaching about ignored policy.

Your bit about NCO’s saying “behooved” is painfully relatable.
@yuritarted9845 ай бұрын
I picked up a habit of saying it and I understand why NCO’s say it

To be fair, it is a really fun word to say if you elongate the 'oov' sound.

This reminds me of the many internal monologues I had staring out into the empty desert as a sentry. People ask me what formed my opinions as an adult, and the answer is two things: the comedy of George Carlin and hundreds of hours of self-reflection in an OP.

Great content on the topic of communication. Two points I would like to touch on. One, language is used to communicate culture and culture is learned behavior. Two, from personal experience the Army has a response to any given situation; not necessarily a "solution."
@Justin_Taylor11 ай бұрын
Language being used to communicate culture depends on how you look at structuralism vs poststructuralism

Your use of Army FMs, a group of documents I can only ever associate with the over explanation of simple tasks, to illustrate a really powerful social phenomena is impressive. I don't know what you do now that you're a civilian, but I sure hope you're able to leverage you unique ability to communicate.

validating points without talking past each other or not going into fight or flight trying to validate you understand what the person meant. none of it's taught anymore. we have to do it ourselves.

To capture the nuance in this one, needed to watch it three times. A bit like Pulp Fiction. Thanks for that.

As an ESL teacher, I can confirm that no matter how precise your grammar, no matter how lyrical your diction, if the other person didn't understand what you meant, you were wrong

I thought this was going to be like the "friendly fire" video and talk more about literal hand signals. Definitely along for the ride. (I work in Technical Communication, so this hit.)

Man... I remember when we were requaling for CFF and because I was the best(as always) I got to make the last call to use up the rest of the ammo. It was mostly illumination but still... I called it in and requested "Fire For Effect, all remaining rounds, this grid" and the guy repeated it back to me verbatim. A minute later we hear the thoomp thoomp thoomp thoomp and start seeing flares popping down range. As more and more popped they were still firing. I think they had something like 70 rounds left lmfao.. it was such a crazy spectacle. Only reason we got to do that is because it was late and they couldn't have any ammunition leftover or they weren't allowed to leave the range until it was all accounted for. So rather than deal with that nonsense they just used it all lol

The context for my comment is your intro to this video, showing some illumination flares. It brought back that specific memory from over 15 years ago.... lol

The current preference to accept linguistic choices that also revise the norms or rules of a language's usage can reflect the continued changes to a language. It seems to me, though, that this can diminish the universal clarity and, in some cases, the beauty of a language. While the Army's need to communicate to troops of varying verbal and reading skills, the sider society used to handle this by recognizing and appreciating regional dialects and colloquialisms. New Yorkers had an accent and characteristic pronunciations that differed from Bostonians or Chicagoans or Southerners, but all understood each other. Some dialects or immigrant-developed 'patois' were acceptable in families and communities but were not expected to be adopted to the general language or considered as equivalent to the 'standard' language. It makes for a conundrum of which is the better approach.

Hey! Just got into and accepted my appointment to USMA. If for some reason I happen to decide I want to commission into a different branch, is it too late now that I have accepted a West Point Appointment? Do cross-commssions ever happen out of service academies? I still have an interest in aviation and still can't fully let go of the idea of flying fixed wing (not really jets but for some reason cargo planes seem badass to me lol) but of course being an Army Officer is still my #1 choice.

well since you showed ranks, how long until you (roughly) get your pretty leaf? does teaching increase/reduce/not effect time? i know the whole 10yr/6yr thing. really enjoyed the video. i miss military women, they rarely showed anger when i was short and direct in my speech. normal women, on the other hand... well, do you know any nice looking 40ish LTC's? Army/AF only please.

My Y chromosome is two generations less degenerate than everyone else with the time left to care about the future and WW2 battle tested through the hell of Burma's endless emotional reality check. Many like myself have no way to refuse the fight whatever the political weather is doing to threaten the future of my kin. All of Life is too simple to ignore when it happens and there's no time to think about anything apart from ending the latest problem before it claims more victims. If you're white your European genetics must live up the the chivalrous fashion of the HMS Bristol to always maintain ship shape whatever Odin sends to harvest the best to fight gods in hoon's heaven for eternity.
