I'm pretty sure the US already successfully used a smart 25mm grenade launcher for a decade or 2 in Iraq until someone noticed the grenades were technically a war crime for being too small, and as a result not deadly enough. It's been showing up in Battlefield games since at least BF3, you aim at an object and set the fuse on the next grenade to detonate just before, at, or past that range. *Edit he talks about it a few minutes in, the into just made it sound like he thought the concept was completely new.
