John Stockton is real definition of a team player
@guiwhiz5 жыл бұрын
@harold mccoy Umm... you do realize John Stockton averaged a double-double for his career . . . . a 20 YEAR career, right? 8 of those 20 years he averaged less than 30 minutes per game... and still averaged a double-double for his career. Also he averaged 14.5 assists per game, 3 rebounds per game (only on other point guard not named Magic Johnson had 3 rebounds per game that year), 2.65 steals, and 17.5 pts in one season. No one else has even come close to that stat line. In the NBA that IS a transcendent player who took over a game whenever he wanted. 14.5 is 30 pts AND he dropped in 17.5 per game that season. That is 47 points production per game out of the PG position. On a team that averaged less than 100 per game that season. He was literally half the offense by himself. Oh did I forget to mention his assist/TO ratio was nearly FIVE TO ONE that year. That is literally insane. No one else is even close. People talk about Magic Johnson and no doubt he was a better 'player' since he could play any position, but he played an average of 4+ minutes more per game. Give those 4 minutes to 'Stock' and who knows what his numbers would have looked like. Magic averaged slightly more assists per game but remember he played only during his physical prime and was a starter pretty much from day one. Stock didn't start until his 4th season. We won't even get into the difference in the 'supporting cast' of Laker's Showtime crew vs. Utah Jazz and ... well... Karl Malone and that's pretty much the only other All-Star on that squad for most of those years. 10 time All-Star (and remember he only averaged more than 30 min per game for 11 seasons; which, basically, means every year he started... he made the All-Star team) 9 time NBA assist leader (ditto . . . . he starts... pretty much he leads the NBA in assists) 5 time all NBA Defensive team (only JKidd with 9 in 19 seasons and Gary 'the Glove' Payton with 9 in 17 seasons) putting him third in appearances by a Point Guard (Kobe Bryant had 12... unreal... I know right!) 182 Playoff games (that is two+ SEASONS of NBA playoff basketball) 15,806 assists (1st by a mile) 3,265 steals (1st by a mile)

Believe it or not, Bob Cousy had to explain to the media, coaches and players that dribbling behind the back, through the legs, and passing behind the back wasn't just "flashy" or "showing off"...these were crucial skills that, someday, every point guard would have to master. According basketball-reference.com, Jerry West is listed as a SG for only two of his fourteen seasons, and PG for each of the other eleven. Meanwhile, Oscar Robertson is listed as PG for every season of his career. Why are these players being considered Shooting Guards?
@MixedTapeVideosNBA9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Alford We went back and forth on this, actually. Different sites list them at different positions. The main reason for that is because they were more like combo guards that played multiple positions. Not only that but the positions weren't as defined back then. You could probably count them as either a point guard or shooting guard, but since we've always listed them as shooting guards in our previous videos, we kept them at that position for these videos in order to maintain consistency.

Much like football up until the 70's alot of league rules and sneaky foul play by a handfull of teams cause the leagues to be extremely unbalanced, the draft, free agency, the playoff formats and rules helped franchises like the Celtics and Browns dominate. This is the kind of thing you can look up on Basketball Reference, which lists what position they actually played most in any given season. They name Iverson, West, and Robertson as shooting guards: Iverson was a shooting guard in just over half of his seasons; West was a shooting guard in 2 out of 14 seasons; and Robertson was a point guard in EVERY SINGLE SEASON he played. So yeah, you're right based on what position he actually played. But... I think they're just trying to move players around so that the better players end up on a list, and probably they felt they didn't have as many top shooting guards as point guards.

One thing I don't get is why everyone glosses over about him being #1 in steals of all time. That's a stat you get on your own hard work and hussle, alot of the greats don't even come close (thinking of the Glove who was known for defense, respectfully, since he is another one of my favorite players). When you are an all time leader in assists (offense) and an all time leader in steals (defense), and only missed a handful of games in 19-20 seasons. gary payton should be like 6th or 5th and Jason Kidd and Nash need to switch spots on the list
@MixedTapeVideosNBA9 жыл бұрын
Actually, we originally had kidd and Nash in the opposite spot. But it was Nash's 2 MVPs that made us move him up.
@jeezydogpsn9 жыл бұрын
+Mixed Tape Videos but kidd led his team to two finals as the best player and had a better all around game triple double threat that played defense
@jeezydogpsn9 жыл бұрын
GOOD POINT! the only reason I said Kidd was because he played defense and a triple double threat and won more even though nash was cheated in 07 Shuaib Al-Bakh'Kam

Just a joke. I watched 90s nba, Kevin Johnson was no where near Gary paytons skill level and dominance! Payton is arguably top 5 pg ever

Again, love your videos. You guys do a great job. But as a fan, I have to disagree strongly with this list. First off, where is Tony Parker? He's definitely a top 10 point guard. He added so many layers to the PG position. I guess you guys left Steph out cause he's young, but I think he should be on the list too. Now, as for your ' love for Steve Nash. The guy was amazing, but he was an AWFUL defender. And that should matter. I think Jason Kidd was much better. He was a key part in the Mavs championship run. I just value D way more I guess.
@KJ28329 жыл бұрын
+Sarosh Khan Tony Parker is big time and a future HOF'er but his regular season numbers weren't amazing compared to the 10 players on this list. If you wanna talk about the best clutch PG's of all-time, no doubt I'll take Tony Parker top 10.
@saroshk77849 жыл бұрын
+KJ2832 Parkers stats are similar to Gary Payton. Parker won 4 rings and was the best player on the Spurs for a couple of them. He was very unique and innovative with the way he played. Top 10 in my book.
@tomandollie88399 жыл бұрын
+Sarosh Khan I honestly think that Parker should be number 10

He's not too 10 talent he could never be a No.1 option for his entire career like a Isiah Thomas ,AI, nash ,hardaway, curry ,Westbrook ,pistol Pete, magic ,drose, shit talent wise I'd take Kyrie over tony he's not even top 20 pg all time I agree he's a HOFer but if not for his team success he wouldn't be

John Stockton needs to be the #1 on this list of pure pointgards. Magic played every position... his stats are skewed, not all PG. Magic even said Stockton was the best.
@candyxxv58344 жыл бұрын
Gary Wright Stockton was definitely the true PG. No one will ever be able to come close to his passing ability. Magic Johnson was listed at and played point guard tho. His height definitely played a big role, since people not used to defending PGs has to defend Magic. Magic and Lebron are kinda the same, since Lebron is said to be the greatest sf of all time, even tho he has and can play all 5 positions. It’s the fact that he’s listed at SF that gets him the ranking. Stockton was definitely the best pure PG in history, really defined what it meant to play point guard.

Personally I would have switched magic and John
@ronaldjackson75414 жыл бұрын
Magic 1 and Stockton 2 Sounds right.. Magic won championships that got to push him ahead.
@angellostnet4 жыл бұрын
I grew up in Utah with the Stockton to Malone Jazz. And I might be persuaded to agree with you depending on how we define a PG. John was, in my opinion, the greatest PURE PG of his era (I don't bother with all time rankings, preferring to consider players against those of their era instead. Since Stockton and Magic played in the same era we can justly compare them). But Magic was the best player to be listed as PG on an NBA stat sheet. And I would love to see how Oscar Robertson and John would have been compared had they played against each other. Interestingly, for teammates Big O had a young Kareem (still Lew at the time), Magic had a more polished and mature Kareem, and John had the Mailman. Since there is little question (to me) that Jabar was the better player than Malone overall that affects how I view Magic vs Stockton. And while there is some merit to the argument that Magic got his rings before MJ and Pippen became icons in Chicago and left everyone in their wake...Magic was still Magic. So based on what seems to be their definition for the ranking process I still have Magic above John. But it is a great discussion and they were both a joy to watch play.

if u watch this in 2019 curry and westbrook would be on the list....and kyrie would be on it in the next 5 years ......like if u agree. because westbrook pass oscar for triple doubles and curry is the greatest shooter ever

Sorry no, westbrook is NOT a top 10 point guards all time, Curry would be 2nd or 3rd in my opinion by westbrook is not.

Shaquan Payne curry yes, Westbrook maybe he’s a stat padder and he’s kind of a selfish player and kyrie hell no kyrie is not a top 10 point guard all time and he won’t be that’s bc last year 18-19 season. He didn’t show up good if he shows up good and helps the nets in a couple seasons
