Neither would be my choice. Vegas and Reno are both filled with Democrat liberals who rule the entire state with an iron fist. By the way, that doesn't mean I like Republicans either. They're nothing but but soft belly fools who can't get anything done even when they are in power. That's why I have no party affiliation.

@@Superman-xr1ohI hear ya. Sadly we live in America and we are left with a democrat or republican ruled state no matter where we go. I am locked in to Nevada due to my state employment and pension… I’m happy the power has shifted back to a Republican governor who was the sheriff of Vegas. We shall see what he does. So far so good.

I moved out to Reno back in 2013. The company I worked for moved me out here, and I loved it ever since, especially coming from a much bigger city of Washington DC. I was just tired of the rat-race and excruciating gridlock traffic. Reno was a "downsize" for me, BUT ironically, became an upgrade in quality of life. I eventually met my wife out here and we have a beautiful Hapa-Babygirl and another one on the way! The world still has this stigma on Reno, and prefer it that way. It's a hidden gem!

I escaped California for Reno in 2018 and haven't regretted it one bit. I live in the Damonte Ranch area you mentioned and your spot on about all the things there are to do around here. I tell my friends and family about the great weather, I love having all four seasons, although this last winter was a bit much. Some want to move to Las Vegas and I say why, Reno is so much nicer! We've got everything here, the Sierra's to the west and deserts to the east. I tell them however, if they come to leave their politics back in California, if you know what I mean!

I have a friend that lived in Damonte ranch then sold his house to live out in the country (Dayton). He likes it but he wasn't prepared for his wife to dislike Dayton. South Reno has everything in just a 5 minute drive. restaurants, movies, shopping malls, casinos, entertainment, Walmart, Home Depot and easy access to Tahoe and Carson City. Nice video and it’s great to see how much you and your family love the area. Yes, contrary to popular belief, Northern Nevada has really nothing in common with Southern Nevada. I’ve lived in that so-called windy valley for over 40 years (my parents came here from Denmark in the 1960s) and it’s a beautiful place to live. We have tons of hiking, horse, and ATV trails and a funky village vibe. The best thing? No HOA. If you want to really be free, get out of an HOA area. As a very long-time resident, I have a few additions: 1. It’s nice to finally see Reno recognized for the cool factor we have known for years. However, its popularity has brought about some negatives. One is the unchecked growth and overbuilding of massive housing developments. Sure, this crazy snow year is great, but water has been an issue throughout the decades. 2. The desert is wonderful, but it’s getting trashed. If you go out into the foothills or desert pick up your shells, casings, and trash. In fact, pick up other people’s trash as well. 3. The traffic has increased by about 30% in the last four years. Ick… 4. You can do pretty well as a prepper here. We have five acres, chickens, veggie garden, ATV, and all the fun toys. But the weather and chores get more difficult to deal with it as you get older. This is what…? The 6th time I’ve shoveled and snow blowed this year? 5. LOL! What are these 4 seasons you are talking about? We have at least 7 or 8. These include a month of California wildfire smoke, Springuary, and snow in August. 😉

I wish I moved here years ago when land was cheaper. I actually lived in a rented RV in Washoe valley for a few months before I bought a house. The owner had 10 acres and rented trailers to traveling nurses. Nice business for sure. I have 2 friends now that I learned later on they live in washoe valley. Everyone seems to have ATVs and jumbo grade is their playground in the summer. As for the negatives… there are enough to make an entire video lol. I’ll compile all the negatives I can and post the video in a few weeks. My list of negatives is long but regardless of my list… the pros still outweigh the cons by a huge margin. I’ve travelled around the world thanks to the military and have lived in a dozen places outside our beautiful country…. I know a good thing when I see it. Nothing is perfect but I feel it’s all about finding what “fits” your lifestyle. I probably couldn’t live in Reno when I was 19. I wanted to see the world. Small town living was not on my goals list at that time of my life. It should have been, looking back but hey… 19 20 21 is rarely our best decision making years.

I left a California in 1989…. So happy I did it early in my life. As for sparks being small town. I can see how it was small 20 years ago. Reno’s main income was still casinos and trucking. Sadly when ever you live next door to a place like Reno which has multiple casinos and a major university and a major tourist lake like a Tahoe near by…. You can’t expect sparks would stay tiny? There’s no open space boundary from Reno. It’s all connected like one big city. Sparks is essentially just east side Reno. Heck the 80freeway has cut through downtown sparks for 100 years. No town can stay small with a major freeway running though it for 100 years lol. If small town Nevada is what dad wanted I would have suggested Fernley or Dayton?

@@Superman-xr1oh if politics is important then Nevada is a middle ground type of state. The cities lean left and the rituals dominate the right. We only have 2 large cities so depending on the decade and world view…. Our state can lean one way or the other. In my 15 years here we have had great gun rights which is important to me. I had a run in with an ex felon who was letting his pit bull run off leash in a kids playground. I confronted him about his dog growling at my kids. He gave me lip and I stood my ground about the leash laws in congested areas. He walked away but if he tried to sick his dog on me or my family (out of stupidity) I at least had a concealed gun on me to defend myself and my kids. I couldn’t have that protected in California or Hawaii where we used to live. Nevada is a nice mix of cowboys and city folks blended together.

I currently live in Sacramento, CA but visit the Reno area pretty frequently. I find the beauty of the area absolutely stunning and completely agree with you on the 4 seasons thing. Only problem for me is the lack of diversity when compared to other places I have lived; Sacramento, Oakland area. Everything else is great and i love the small-town vibe too. The drive from Reno through Carson City is breathtaking.

As a brown skinned person I hear you on diversity. I feel like its growing though. Last year they held a large Hawaiian festival downtown on the riverfront. Im seeing more Hawaiian food restaurants like Kika's, Kenji's, Aloha Shack, Loco Ono Poke, Pola Poke Bowls and Lili's. Italian, Chinese, Thai and Japanese food has been in Reno for a while now. Chinese and Mexican families have been here a while too. Chinese built the railroads and Mexicans build the homes here. Diversity is coming for sure.

Awesome video. Thanks. My wife and I have been planning on moving from Hawaii to Vegas. It would have happened, earlier, but for COVID. Hawaii, especially here on Oahu, has become just too crowded and expensive. Traffic, particularly during the school year, has become nearly unbearable. It's a massive change since I first arrive here in 1968. Up until very recently we've been considering moving down south to the Las Vegas area as I'd mentioned. But lately I've been urging my wife to consider taking a look at Reno. I know the winters are colder up there and that is a big consideration for a born and raised in Kalihi girl; plus she has family in Vegas. However, I think I'm going to exert a bit more effort toward seeing if I can get her to take a look at Reno. meanwhile I would urge you to keep posting as many videos as you can comfortably manage about the Reno/Tahoe area. I can assure you there will be one "very interested" viewer here in central Oahu. Aloha.🤙

Nice. I suggest taking a trip to Vegas then hop on a $100 round trip flight to Reno for just one night stay. The contrast will confirm you made the right choice on Vegas. Or the wrong choice? We loved Vegas and if you move there you can’t deny it’s an adult playground. Plus you have family there so that’s big. When we discovered Reno and Carson City we knew it was for us and funny thing happened. My parents loved it too. They sold their big property in Pahrump NV and move up here with us a year after we moved. My dad is in his 70s and thanks me every time we go for a ride in his RZR. He loves the hills and mountains of Carson City. Wild horses come into their yard to eat the bushes. It’s nuts!!! I’ll do more videos on the area. People are now asking me to talk about specific neighborhoods. Good and bad.

I use to watch all your content, but the algo stopped recommending them even tho I'm subscribed. This video came up because I am considering retiring to the Reno area from Ohio in about 5 years and I'm doing some research. I didn't even realize it was the same channel until you mentioned going to all the Vegas shows. I've been keeping an eye on Reno metro area and I like a lot about it, particularly the weather. I love the fact that you get 4 defined seasons and low humidity in the summer. That said, I am concerned about the rapidly climbing cost of living out there. I won't be retiring rich by any means, so I'm afraid I'll get priced out of the area by the time I retire.

Thank you for this positive post! I have been living in Reno since 1980. And as much as some people want to complain about our area, I still think even after the growth... It has his potential to continue being a good area. It's all about people's attitudes and what they want to do, to make things positive around here. And just like any place in the world, there's going to be homelessness and there's going to be crime and drug addiction. It's funny how some people think that Reno has really bad problems when it comes to that. They haven't seen anything, when it comes to other places! There are more good people here than bad!!! I don't think I would want to move anywhere. Sure, there is a lot of growth and a lot of changes. But that's life! There's always going to be changes... It's how you deal with it. I live where you mentioned in the video, up in the North valleys area. I did live in Sparks a few times. And I agree, there are so many things you can do around here! You mentioned the schools are good here. A lot of local people might disagree. But if you're saying better than Las Vegas, well Reno people, there's another reason why you shouldn't complain! There's always going to be something somewhere else that's worse!!! So to end my comment, welcome to Reno.. I know you've been here for a couple of years. But he still wanted to say welcome anyways.

My parent got lucky and found a manufactured home on a 1/2 acre in mound house which is the hills above Carson city (brothel area). Those properties are now selling for north of $400k. At the time it was mostly retired folks, now with all the tech sector, the traffic is crazy there, so he sold and moved out of the area. @@mixflip That's part of it. The major problem is that the city of Reno did not plan properly to have housing units to coincide with the boom of the tech sector. So, the area is experiencing the same issues as other areas like Silicon Valley. @mixflip
@mixflip Жыл бұрын
I hear you. With all the growth from big businesses like Tesla comes the demand for housing. Demand goes up and so do the prices because owners want to take advantage of the demand. On one hand I cant blame them because thats just business. But on the other hand its greed. There is not real reason that rent on a single family home should be $2500/month. If you want a strong healthy community...give them affordable homes so they can spend that extra money on "the community" by going out to dinner, movies, festivals, events, etcs. A strong home with stable parents with stable incomes will spend their money on the local businesses. If they spend all their money on a house there is nothing left to do but just stay home. Its like being a prisoner aka house poor. Yeah you have a house but thats all you have. When I lived in Vegas, at one point we lived in a modest condo. We all had a bed to sleep in, it was cozy and we loved being together and most importantly we could easily afford it so we went on many trips and adventures in the area like the grand canyon, Utah, and California. The key was that my job was enough to pay the rent with fun money left over. Reno is losing that option for families with all these expensive homes. Raising the minimum wage is not the answer either. Im sure most small businesses are barely existing. Operating paycheck to paycheck. If they are forced to pay their workers more they might just choose to shut down. If America can afford to give Ukrainians 100 billion dollars then America can afford to subsidize workers income at the federal level and not put the burden of more money on the small businesses. If you have a job, the gov should give you a stimulus check to go with your check. If you work harder you should get a bigger federal stimulus check. Instead the more you make , the more they take. Its insane!!!!! We have billions to give away yet we give it to Ukrainians and not Americans?????

I think city planners didnt do their job well. For example Sparks has no highway? But North valleys does. Now every neighborhood being built in Spanish Springs and beyond heading north where all the growth is...these people have to suffer through stop lights for miles until they reach the highway 80. The city knew there would be growth eventually but they failed to plan. There should be a back road connecting Spanish Springs to USA parkway at the base of Virginia peak mtn. (that big mtn east of Sparks) They knew USA parkway was going to be an industrial mega hub. McCarran blvd should not be a stop light loop. It should have a bunch of intersections closed off to make it a parkway like they have in Summerlin in Vegas. Leave the main intersections open but all these little stop lights need to be closed to make traffic flow faster and smoother. Every beltway Ive seen around the US is built this way yet Sparks and Reno didnt get the memo for some reason? Growth happens. City planners go to college to be experts at forecasting city growth and infrastructure. Reno just got lazy and now we are all playing catch up trying to build a city that should have been planned out 15 years ago. Now the new 580 to carson city and veterans parkway are a huge success!!!!

My mom is a gardener and tinkerer so she is always dressing up the house and landscape around the house. Nicest looking manufactured home on the block for sure!!!! They dont do a tons of activities other than go out to dinner and a movie and the occasional road trip with us and the kids. They are essentially home bodies. Now if you are very active, I have friends who are all in their 60's who hike all over Tahoe, ride mountain bikes all over Carson City and lake Tahoe, go hunting using ATVs and SXSs, watch baseball games in Reno and go camping with their grandkids in the warmer weather. This area is more for the outdoorsy types but Reno does have a growing downtown walking district with lots of people enjoying walks along the shops and restaurants down by the riverfront area. There are lots of concerts now in Reno. I always see billboards saying a country star or 90's pop star is performing at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno or Nugget casino in Sparks. Lots of comedians tour dates stop here. Plus the older crowd love Hot August Nights which is the biggest Hot Rod and classic car show on the west coast. Then the motorcycle riders love Street Vibrations held every year in Reno. Its HUGE! Bikers everywhere. As for medical. My parent go to the big VA hospital for dad in Reno and my mom just goes to her doctors in Carson City. Reno has Renown medical center which is a level 2 trauma center that services all of Northern Nevada and lake Tahoe. Then there is Carson Tahoe Regional medical center in Carson City which is a big hospital that is 20 minutes from south lake Tahoe and services that affluent community Im sure. Tahoe has money!!!! Im sure its not on the same level as anything in the Bay Area but its decent Im guessing. I know alot of guys in their 60's here and they dont seem to have any complaints on the medical system up here. (retired cops and firefighters)

Welcome (belated) to the Reno area. There are lots of things to enjoy, arts, mountains and hills, outdoor recreation like all the things you talked about on this video. Sure there are problems - and issues with city politics and development that's not always as efficient as one might expect, etc., but it's been home for me for most of my life and I enjoy it.

As a world traveler (thanks to the military) I can say easily that every city has its problems. We just need to pick one that has pros and that outweigh the cons.

Born and raised in the islands, moved to the mainland in 2015 at 62. Honestly, I wished I moved up in my 30's. If you are not working for the union or government or come from money, the Islands make it very difficult to survive. Up here you have freedom of movement, things are cheaper and if you dont like an area or its weather or their politics or whatever, you pack up the van and drive to your new location. You control your destiny. We have bad stuff, like everywhere else. No like'em, move...I'm in Utah and I'm appreciating it...really miss my poi though..

Perfectly said. My wife is born and raised on the north shore. We went back to visit last month and she said… she doesn’t see herself ever moving back to Hawaii. Not because of Hawaii but because she fell in love with the wide open spaces of the west. Heck we might even move to Montana some day. She love’s Yellowstone.

@@mixflipJust got back from Maui, had an awesome time, the whole family went, but damn everything is so expensive. My wife and I moved to SW Montana a couple years ago and couldn’t be happier. Highly recommended. Thanks for the video!

@@The_Rain_Song de Montana? Now that’s what I’m talking about. The adventure cowboy on KZbin lives in that area. So beautiful there.

Hi, this is a great video about your move, loved it. I've been living in Fernley, Nevada since 2002. Seen so many changes in the past 21 years. Home prices have nearly tripled since I moved here. Of course the cost of living is much higher now. Property tax, water, and utilities have gone way up and I am on a fixed income (SS). The summers have been getting hotter, but not as bad as Las Vegas and Phoenix which is way too hot for me to survive in. I was planning to move to another area in a year or two, but after seeing your video, I may just stay put.

I was just in Fernley today. Bought a trailer for our RZR lol. Fernely is going to be the next Reno in 10 years because of TESLA and Panasonic. That may be good or bad depending on your idea of growth and prosperity lol.
