Man I couldnt figure out what i was doing wrong with my mixes until I watched this video. I misunderstood the sheet you have, but now i get it. On vocals, i kept leaving so much unneeded low end, and i accidentally cut out a lot of mid, oops! I didnt fully understand the EQ cut you had there bit have managed with everything else. I went back on a mix that i just couldnt get right and followed everything i saw here that it called for. Now my mix sounds full and the way i wanted it to in my head. Thank you fright box even though this video is old, your information is alwags golden,

This is all priceless. I'd like to add, regarding the transient designer on the snare, Izotope make the Neutron channel strip, which contain a three band transient designer (to focus on the bleed frequencies) and everything needed for a complete mix. It is truly a one stop shop and even if you can do everything with separate and free plugins, I highly suggest those who want to invest in a plugin to check this one out. Not too pricey, stay as simple as needed or goes as deep as asked to, all in one integrated plugin. Sorry if it sounds like a paid comment ahah but I don't understand why people don't talk more about this! Cheers!

Can't explain in words how empowering it feels that ive had 2 distinctly different amp settings for 5150 II amps/ampsims ... and your tone here has been shown on other vids of yours and is my main/go to settings down to within a half hour if you use clock face numbers to call out tonestack settings (pre gain, 1pm, post gain 11pm) I KNEW that shit was metal as fuck! Love ya Bobby, you're the last bastion of useful info for metal tracking and mixing around, and by far the best. Wish you success from Ohio, hope we end up collabing one day or declaring war on each other in a professional and business like manner. Either way is the shit
@MatthewBagar3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't comment it but I feel like I should point it out :D You said that with EZ Drummer "you need to" export audio files in order to control each channel individually. But that's not true actually. You can build multichannel routing and then set outputs in EZ Drummer mixer to play on specific track in your DAW mixer. Don't know if you just don't know about it or Pro Tools cannot do it, but it's possible :)
@FrightboxRecording3 жыл бұрын
Very true, but it's heavier on CPU since the plugin would be live. Also, the randomization in EZdrummer wouldn't be 100% the same with each pass which isn't ideal for pro mixing (in my opinion). That's why most pro mixers print their virtual instruments before mixing begins.
@MatthewBagar3 жыл бұрын
@@FrightboxRecording Right :) I'm thiking about this the same way. When I worked in Cubase I definitely printed my tracks because Cubase is bad at handling VSTi's and amp sims (at least in my case). So I went back to Reaper because it never lets me down and Reaper can handle many VSTi's at once without any problems :D I saw you also work in Reaper so you know what I'm talking about :D

Do you use automation at all? On a different note, it would be really cool to see you repeat this process for your next recoding, maybe in a more condensed format, but using both high end "industry standard" gear and your inexpensive setup, comparing the results. I'm just curious what the difference would be, but it might also be useful for people who are making the best of their cheaper gear and are thinking of upgrading, etc. Great series, extremely helpful.

Also, the transient designer is just an expander or sonic maximizer right? Which basically does the opposite of a compressor by lowering the quieter noise while bringing up the louder sound.
@FrightboxRecording3 жыл бұрын
Hello Matt! The transient designer is more like a compressor. It shapes the actual transient in a very particular way that's sort of like compression, but much more transparent. As far as latency, I've never head an issue. Even when using my Digi002 and 2006 Macbook Pro, latency wasn't an issue if I used a small buffer size. Also, all plugin in my tracking template are really light on CPU.

How did you get each tom to print for EZ Drummer? I only get a stereo out with all 3 toms, not individual outputs for each tom. It makes me almost want to just upgrade to Superior because it’s so frustrating. Every other sampler gives you a direct out for each mic but not EZD 🤦🏻♀️
@FrightboxRecording3 жыл бұрын
EZ drummer does give you a direct out. You can change the channel from "channel 1" to one of the other stereo outputs which can be routed to tracks within your DAW. I've never needed to upgrade to Superior for this exact reason.
