I did all the exercises and as I kept progressing to the third exercise, I came around to mixing the perfect consistency each time and it came out velvety and smooth. Thank you for the exercises it really helps :) and as a beginner myself, I totally recommend doing the exercises before going in to start a project. Thank you once again!

@@myriamtillson 4/7/2021 USA Grandpa Bill: Myriam, I am impressed by these high-quality, expertly laid out, quality teaching videos...introduction to Gouache. Well-spoken, quickly but humanely timed (about 250 words per minute?), and articulated nicely in your accent, your two introductory videos have the feel of an experienced, professional teacher with a well laid out Lesson Plan. Thank you for these performances. Makes learning so much easier.

Not going to lie. I always do recommend practicing a little bit and just kind of getting yourself into the painting mood also to figure out the consistencies of the medium itself. Obviously, if you've been painting for a decade. I wouldn't figure you would need to do this. But it is a great beginner tip for certain. I personally, just like to paint anything as practice, but still working on all the techniques. Such as blending, the right use of water to paint, layering, you know, all the good stuffs. Just another suggestion to try, if you feel up to it of course! Might have to ease your way. But I wouldn't necessarily focus on taking too much time, or trying to make it look immaculate. Just loosen up and have fun with the practice! ANY WHO, ya'll take care!

This video is crammed with useful information. Your explanation about how more diluted paint will seep into the paper, and therefore be less likely to reactivate, was a real a-ha moment for me.

Trust me, I feel like that ALL THE TIME. Don't compare yourself, it'll only bring you down. Practice practice practice, and then one day, you'll paint a piece that you'll look at and go " I would love that if I saw it done by someone else", :) It's the best feeling. But what you described happens to all of us

I really needed this series. I feel like Gouache 101 videos that are structured and clear are very rare on KZbin. I've found that there are a lot of structured 101s on Watercolor, Acrylics, and Oil but not a lot on Gouache.

These are awesome exercises and so many useful tips! Especially when it comes to gouache that can be a tricky medium to learn how to use it at first, these exercises are really useful to understand better how gouache works! And as for any medium, the more you practice it the better you get hang of it!

This is such an amazing tutorial. I get so much information in so little time, without being rushed or overwhelmed. This video has taught me a lot, because you managed to verbalise and show those 'intangible' skills other teachers leave up to practice. I'm sure even with all your skill and experience, you have worked very hard to get this video to be so concise yet so amazing. Wow.

Really thank you so much for the details in this tutorial because I kinda gave up on gouache tutorials, a lot of them are just videos of people painting a piece with no real knowledge on how to actually work with the medium... they don’t really explain what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. They often say it’s like if water color and acrylic had a baby. Which I can understand, but I have never seriously worked with acrylic only water color, so I tend to use it as watercolor but that’s not even why I have the paint to begin with! At times I can be a visual learner, but in the instance of being completely new to a subject I need to have some background info, so thank you deeply for this.

I bought my gouache kit over two years ago. I use watercolor most of the time (I'm not very good but it's the medium in painting that i'm most familiar with), so the transition from watercolor to gouache can be a bit unnerving. I bought my gouache kit without any prior knowledge to it and try to follow how the tutorials/speedpaint of different artists go. Your videos are so concise and you explain them really well. You delve deeper and actually show us the ropes. :) I haven't used gouache that much in an opaque manner so I am looking forward to picking them up again! Just bought new synthetic brushes from Daler Rowney. A bit intimidated, but I hope it goes well. Will use your tutorials for the whole process. Thank you!

This was extremely helpful. I only started gouache 3 days ago and the most difficult part as a beginner has been mixing the colours. The other tutorials didn't give a detailed description of the consistency of water so this was really helpful. Until now I had just tried playing around with it and get a feel for it. I couldn't mix a lot of paint at a single time because it dries faster then watercolors and if I didn't mix a lot of it at a single time a lot of patches will be visible in the result. And while that can be fixed by applying a more opaque layer it would also make it a bit harder to layer colour. As you said the ideal situation would be if the base layer was dilute it would be easier to layer but doing that has been harder then I had expected. Thats why the exercises you have suggested will be really helpful.

Thank you! I needed this to get back to using gouache!!! I have the caran d'ache studio PAN gouach set which I got because it's more convenient to set up but it's not as opaque as tube paints. Luckily the paint itself seems pigmented so adding white tube paints helps make it more opaque without making it too light.

Hi Myriam! This might be answered in the next videos but what do you think about color blocking? I noticed most gouache artists use that technique when finishing pieces but I really struggle with it. Thank you so so much for these exercises ❤

I feel that I need to use a lot of paint for what I need, compared to the amount of paint I would use in watercolor for the same portion of paper. Is it also your experience? Great tips! I took tons of notes. How do you know if a lower layer is dry "enough"? Do you suggest waiting a certain time or testing the lower layer? I know that is hard to answer, but any rule of thumb would be great. Somebody said wait five minutes. Any suggestions? :)
@myriamtillson2 жыл бұрын
I know this is frustrating type of answer, but it really is one of those things that you get a better feel for with experience :) But I personally find that touch dry works well, although one of the good things with gouache, is that it dries matt so you'll get to a point where you'll be able to tell when it is dried simply by eye!

Hi Myriam, I am a beginner to gauche, and I assumed (before doing research) that acrylic paper would be better. I am done with my pencil work and would not like to transfer it on to watercolor paper. So, is it alright if I use gauche on acrylic paper?
