Love using my Designers Gouache, and been painting with them for many years. I paint from vintage 100+ years old Christmas postcards, and 40s /50s Christmas cards. Usually use 300gsm paper. They are expensive compared to other mediums but I like them. Also use them for painting from old American comic book covers from the 40s to the 60s era, and they end up poster size. Love the videos Myriam. RAY LANG in the UK

Thank you Myriam for this informative introduction to gouache. I'm using acrylics but even with the most expensive paints that claim to be opaque on the tube, I'm having to go over dark areas many times with yellows and oranges in particular, so I'm considering giving gouache a try.

Yellow and orange are both transparent. Try underpainting with white. Or you can apply the paint really thickly, though that's not very budget friendly.

I got some for my 18th birthday and brought it in with me in high school during art class because our final was to create a series using any medium we wanted and my teacher asked “What’s gouache?” I let her use some of mine on a scrap paper and she fell in love with it instantly. I painted 4 mini landscapes from my mind on mixed media paper and got an A+. I also brought my Copic markers, gel pens, and watercolor pencils with me because people at my table wanted to use them but my school could only afford crayola brand art supplies. (Actually they gave my teacher a budget of $2 per student for supplies. She had to cut into her own paycheck to provide us with supplies.) It’s sad but people really loved the new types of supplies.

Does Gouache paint need atleast a little water or wet brush for the first time ? can we dip the brush directly in the himi can and paint or little water would be necessary for smooth brush stroke ? are gouache smooth without water touch or does the brush stop inbetween if water is not touched ?
@myriamtillson14 күн бұрын
I personally would recommend wetting your brush first before dipping it in paint, yes. Not only will it make application of the paint easier, but it's generally better for the brush too, as it helps the paint not gather at the base of the bristles too much. :)
