Great and well thought out changes to enhance the mix! I wonder why you don´t use a nice hardware set up on your mixbus. Especially the D.W. Fearn seems to be popular on many engineers mixbus for it´s color and high end. Is it for the Plugin Alliance marketing or do you really prefer digital in this scenario? Or do you let the mastering engineer do the final glue and excitement with his expansive gear?
@tabmixedit2 жыл бұрын
@@ronson795 Thanks for the kind words and for the question. IDK if this made it to the final video presentation, but basically my main A/D converter was being serviced when I started this song, and I had a tight turnaround to deliver the mix so I had to sum internally and use plugins for mix bus. Had to move too fast to re-patch the mix bus, but that said, I love the Fearn EQ on my mix bus and use it often. Generally, I think it comes down to whatever I commit to at the beginning and what I "make decisions through" for lack of a better expression.

Loved it. Super well done and concise explanations on everything. Was the last fabfilter limiter just to get more level for client mix review? or was that on the print you sent to mastering?
@tabmixedit2 жыл бұрын
@@easternsouvenirs thanks for watching. Yes, the FabFilter Pro L2 Limiter was just go get more level for the artist and label to listen to; what i send to mastering does not have that L2 printed on it, and i don't really "mix through it" just kinda turn it on at the end.

I really like his intellectual, nearly scientific approach to the mix. The result being everything is logic (even in protools 😅) and everything makes perfect sense. Very unique. Love it. The exact opposite to people like eg Andy Johns, where everything is rock n roll and sucks and rules and in the end there is a great mix with the impression that he doesn’t know how he got there. At least feeling great all the time. Chris KNOWS what he is doing every single second of the process and this makes it real fun to listen to what he is saying. Because it makes sense.

I have a question. How do you know when your done with the mix and are ready for mastering? Is there some type of guide on this topic?
@tabmixedit2 жыл бұрын
It’s tough to quantify, and something that’s obviously gonna vary track to track. What I can say is common is that I stop hearing the mix and start hearing the song; that’s a good indicator it’s done.

im curious to know if you were mixing INTO those mixbus plugins, or did you mix first, then enhance with those after?
@tabmixedit Жыл бұрын
I mix into the first bus compressor usually doing not that much gain reduction. I don't usually mix into the limiter or EQ which i put on 80% of the way through the mix

I have to like the song in order to mix it, I won’t mix hip hop or rap or modern style pop, as most is just absolute rubbish. The song in the video I wouldn’t waste the time on as it is rather boring, there’s nothing to grab me no energy. It’s like everything else around.
