Great episode! Tchad has such a bold forward approach to those center mids. Things just jump out at you. BIG low end too. Looking back, I never got into the black keys, but ironically, my favorite songs were the one's Tchad mixed (this was before i knew what "mixing" was). Do Shawn Everett next! Definitely has a unique sonic voice (and a few grammys to boot).

When it goes to the chorus in Digital Witness the Tori Amos influence is so apparent. Big fan of TChad's style -- not always into the artist/bands he works with but love his approach. Def goes for wide which with headphones or a good system is a much more enjoyable listening experience. But the solid center mixes translate better to modern ways of consuming music, ie, phones, bluetooth speakers, etc.

I am a composer for theater. I must create and present my work in a professional manner in the form of a demo. However, I have found that those that evaluate my work have very little imagination and the closer i can get to a “finished” product that is Spotify ready, the more opportunities I will have to work. So I have found that I need to be a good mixer. And in order to get the best mix, I need to know a bit about mastering. My work will never be completely DIY. I will involve other performers, mix or master engineers and sometimes producers or arrangers. But even knowing that- knowing more about mixing and mastering better informs our collaboration. Learning is never wasted

There is an episode of the SonicScoop podcast where Justin goes deep into the preamps and analog gear topic. You need to check it out. The point is: preamps doesn't really matter so much, unless they are clean. The character you're talking about comes from creative use of saturation and distortion, wherever it comes from. Also THE ROOM is the big factor. I mean the room where the recording takes place. In my experience, it has more influence on the sound in general, then microphones. Maybe it's just me, but I think the art of the recording comes from knowing how the combination of the source, the room, mic choice and relative source/room/mic position. You absolutely can ruin the recording using the best set of mics and preamps in the world.

He emphasizes the sub octave from 40-70 HZ, especially on kicks, and is often willing to compromise on upper bass and the lowest mids to make things sound deep. To make those low frequencies work, he ensures they are incredibly well controlled in dynamics, but without losing attack and punch. Although I don't know his approach to low end from the horses mouth, getting controlled low end that still has good front end "punch" and great sustain often involves either 1. Fast attack compression to control transients coupled with slow attack compression to bring the attack back, and a fast release to increase sustain or 2. Sample augmentation. Compressing low end instruments separately from other instruments, or relying on multiband dynamic control can also be helpful in getting this degree of prominent, deep, yet tight and well controlled low end. -DISTORTION: Tchad loves distortion and saturation, and isn't afraid to push it hard, often in parallel. Favorite devices include the Shure Level-Loc (or its digital replacement, the Soundtoys Devil-Loc) and the Sans Amp, which has been recreated in plugin form by Avid. -AMBIENCE: Tchad rarely uses much if any reverb, preferring to bring out natural room tone-or create it himself-often using dynamics processing and saturation to get more of it. He may occasionally use delay in place of reverb, but rarely in a very obvious way. -PANNING: One remarkable quality is just how W I D E mixes are once Tchad gets through with them. He sometimes pushes things to the degree of putting a bit of a "hole" in the middle relative to his peers. He is unafraid to stack prominent instruments into the sides, often with over-the-top distortion, clipping, saturation or dynamic control, and more prominent upper midrange relative to high end and low mids. He's also unafraid of having wide bass elements. -CONTRAST: Tchad is a master of contrast, regularly showing brief flashes of mono, midrangey and more distant sounds so that his usual up front, scooped and wide tone feels even more exaggerated in comparison. -CREATIVE HIGHLIGHTS: It's a pleasure to find little ear candy elements that other mixers might bury, that Tchad fearlessly brings forward and highlights. Sometimes he will push ear candy elements at the expense of keeping the vocal front of mind, but never at the expense of the groove. I could probably go on given more time... Let me know if you have takeaways of your own to add! -Justin

Sorry, do these mixers mix on a box but through a desk / summing?
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop Күн бұрын
I don't think that either Tchad or Serban use a desk or summing. I believe they are both all digital these days. Feel free to correct me if you have evidence to the contrary! But both of them sound like what most new producers imagine that "analog" sounds like, because they assume "more analog=more gooder". There is analog gear that definitely has its tone, and in some cases has only been approximated in the box... ...But those differences are generally much smaller than the differences in skill and taste between producers or engineers, and it's impossible to say which is "better" as that's entirely subjective. -Justin

Justin, I'm curious as a mastering engineer what would you say is ideal for the mix engineer to leave the peak volume at if we are mixing into a limiter & getting close to how we want the record to sound before sending it off to a mastering engineer like yourself? Thank You. Go big or go home on your computer if you're going to do live streams & also have your DAW running. If you’re using a limiter on the master bus, why are you sending it off to anyone? You’re literally, already “mastering” it yourself at that point… 🤷‍♂️
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop Күн бұрын
I have no preferences on this. My only preference is that the mix is as good as the mixer can make it! If you have a lot of confidence with dynamics processing, then you can use it on the mix bus to your heart’s content. If it sounds good, it is good. The best mixes I get to master are the ones that sound as close to “finished” as possible before I get them. But if you don’t have extreme confidence with these tools, then don’t push them too hard. It’s easier to add more in mastering than to take it away. The catch 22 is that you will only become confident by occasionally pushing them too hard :-) Serban uses a limiter on the mix bus as well as single and and multiband compression. His mixes are known to hit as high as -6LUFS on the loudest sections before they even go to mastering. Obviously, the mastering engineer is doing very little in these cases. But there, we are talking about skills that taken decades of mixing in the same room to obtain. I hope that helps! -Justin
@ghfjfghjasdfasdf
@ghfjfghjasdfasdf Күн бұрын
Ok. ^ Then there’s absolutely zero reason to allow anyone else to touch it at that point. Sounds asinine to “mix it down” to a “mastered level”, but not consider it mastered. I bet the guy is utilizing dynamics on his master bus as well. Sounds so stupid to me to involve anyone else past that point… what for

I’ve been confused on those numbers. By the final master I want it to hit at least -11 or -10. If I shoot for -18 on the mixbus how do I reach -7 db of makeup gain on the master without overdoing the final master limiter ?
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop 2 күн бұрын
The secret is that you let the limiter do some limiting :-) The other secret is that commercial releases have more dynamic range control on them at other stages than you might expect. There may be other stages of dynamic range in the mix even before mastering, as well as additional stages of dynamic range control in the master, such as saturation, soft clipping, fast attack compressors, de-essers and multiband processors and so on. The mixes that go loud the best are mixes that are hot at the mixing stage. This can be achieved by using sample augmentation, bus processing, individual track processing and the like so that whatever your average level is, your peaks are not 18 dB hotter than your average signal by the time you're done with the mix! Then, the mastering engineer doesn't have to do 7 or 8 dB of dynamic range control on the loudest transient peaks control to get you to -10 or -11 LUFs. But yes, to get final masters that loud, that dynamic range control has to occur SOMEWHERE. This can occur in the form of using sampled and electronic instruments as primary or supporting elements, it could mean compressing and limiting live played instruments more than you think you "should", and it could mean several layers of dynamics processing (individual instrument, sub group, mix bus, and mastering) to get there. The dirty secret is that vocals on most major commercial releases are generally compressed by at LEAST 10-20 dB cumulative... and that's BEFORE mastering! Mixing to average at -18 is a great place to START. But as you gain confidence with dynamics processing you don't have to stay there. And even if you keep your average level there, you don't have to settle for transient peaks that are 18 dB hotter than your average level. That would be practically unheard of in a final commercial release in any popular genre. I hope that helps! -Justin

@SonicScoop 2 күн бұрын
The 02 are more of a “2 way with a sub” kind of vibe. Also very great speakers. If you prefer the sound of two ways with a sub, and want speakers that go really deep, they could be a great way to go. Personally, I tend to prefer the more forward midrange of 3-way designs because I think they steer me to making better decisions for mixing or mastering applications. But adding a sub improves the midrange of two-ways, and allows them to go DEEP, and are especially useful in a closed box design like the Barefoot 01 and 02, as closed backs are harder to get bass extension out of without a sub. If you want even more extended lows with even better transient handling in the lows, the 01 and 02 design is pretty ideal for that! I hope that helps! -Justin

Pretty shitty setup to be honest, I feel like my mixes sound better when I mix with my headphones (athm50x). So I thinks it’s time to make the switch to something more in the mid-high end. I’m bout to pull the trigger on the Dynaudio Lyd 48, especially because of the low end extension. How would you compare the 48s and the Barefoot 03s? And which one would you pick? I’m mainly into music production and mixing, but also some mastering every now and then
@SonicScoop
@SonicScoop 2 күн бұрын
Man, they are both great. ADAM, Dynaudio and Barefoot are the top choices in this range. Out of all of them, the most fun and inspiring to listen to are the Barefoot for my tastes, no question. That said, for the way I mix, I could sometimes benefit from the slightly less pretty sounding ADAMs. Some people are also going to prefer the Dynaudio, which I think of as being "punchy". The Barefoot are a little brighter, the ADAM a little darker, the Dynaudio a little "punchier". The Dynaudio are also forward, but in a way that's a little less glossy and controlled than the Barefoot. (The ADAMs and Dynaudio will also go a little deeper, but whether or not that’s useful depends on your room.) The ADAM could steer you in the direction of a slightly brighter and less boxy mix, the Dynaudio might encourage you to add a little more "control" in the mix, while the Barefoot might steer you in the direction of a slightly smoother mix, as mixes will tend to sound like the inverse of the speakers they were mixed on to a degree. Ideally, you'll be able to listen to each of the three brands on reference material you know and pick what you think will make you put out the best sounding work. That said, if this was impossible, and you randomly threw darts blindfolded at pictures of all 3 and picked that way, you probably wouldn't be disappointed! They're all great. I hope that helps! -Justin

OK, the Kef R3 are beautiful speakers! The LS50, not as much for my tastes. (I'm not a space alien.) But the mistake you're making here is to compare Pro Audio speaker aesthetics to Hi-Fi speakers. If you compare the Barefoots to other Pro Audio brands like ADAM and Dynaudio, the Barefoot are clearly the better looking monitors, especially if you find yourself in the same room with them. They just have a more sporty, unique and hi-fi kind of vibe than the other monitors made for the Pro Audio market, which tend to skew far more utilitarian in appearance. I hope that helps give you some context. -Justin

@@SonicScoop "HiFi speakers", "pro audio" speakers etc, are just marketing terms. Speakers are speakers, the criteria that make them good or bad are the same, like transient response, dispersion etc. I suggest you research the HiFi side too, there's a lot of useful stuff to be learned there, just stay away from snake oil stuff. I've researched both sides and prefer passive speakers "bookshelf" with separate amp or amps, you get a lot more control and flexibility that way. It's also easier to do immersive setup with passive speakers (less cable work).
