In this video, I show you how to mix potassium oxalate developer for the platinum and palladium process from scratch using a formula of Potassium Carbonate and Oxalic Acid.
sources: The Chemistry Store www.chemistryst...
Formula
230 gm Oxalic Acid
200 gm Potassium Carbonate
1 liter water
Mix Potassium Oxalate first! Then add Oxalic Acid and stir vigorously in a well ventilated area.

Thanks Bill, found this very helpful. I took notes and will mix my own Potassium Oxalate from now on.

If you add the new to the old, do you have to adjust the PH? Or, can you reasonable expect they will be about the same?

Great question. It will usually work out to be about the same, however, that is only if you keep the pH level consistent in your original developer. I usually keep my pH consistent by adding a bit of oxalic acid throughout the life of the developer.

Hi Ralph. I’m not sure what could’ve gone wrong. The crystals forming art to abnormal and you can always filter those out, however, the color should’ve been a little more of a green. Do you use your local water? I’m wondering about its quality. Maybe you could try with distilled water.?

@@BillSchwab Hi Bill, I tried both tap and distilled water. I tried also to dissolve oxalate powder in water directly to see what happenns. It turned immediately yellowish. I will order oxalate from another supplier. Maybe the oxalate is the problem.

@@ralfschoeneck2089 just to be clear. What you need is potassium carbonate, and oxalic acid.

@@BillSchwab Hi Bill, yes. I first dissolved the potassium carbonate in 1L of distilled water before adding the oxalic acid.

Bill, thanks for this great video! I'm wondering if you could mix the 200 grams of potassium carbonate into 500ml of water and then mix the 230 grams of oxalic acid in a separate container with 500ml of water and then finally add the mixed oxalic acid solution to the potassium carbonate solution to avoid all the fizzing? Thanks for your thoughts on this!
