Hey Sean,I have been following up on your videos for a while now and I must say you are doing a really good job putting up tutorials like this, I got a problem though. I use FL Studio as my DAW and still have my levels much quieter even at 2db below zero! So I tried raising the gain and had many clipping issues though it didn't get to distortion point, as soon as I saw a video you made about putting a limiter or the SSL G master Buss compressor, I first tried the limiter on the master bus but it ruined all my dynamics even at default setting, also experimented with all the limiters at my disposal but it was still the same even with my Izotope Ozone 5 Maximizer, the only one that gave me a very nice compressed and lovely sound was the SSL bus compressor as it checked all my clippings and seemed to really glue the sounds together but now taking it to another session, it was still sounding too low even at 0db compared to other records, raising the levels again would either make it sound clipped or distorted or sound squashed and over compressed with a limiter. This has been my major problem for a while now, I don't really know whether the problem is coming from the DAW as even my waves De-Breath plugin has a massive delay response when put as an insert on my mixer channel in FL Studio and doesn't De breath my vocals as it normally should in the tutorials I have seen so far or maybe it's just me missing something along the line. I'd be really glad if you could address this issue or better still show me with a video on how to get a high level using FL Studio as the DAW for the demonstration to make it easier to understand. I was also wondering if u could put up a tutorial on how you achieved that effect on the vocal sample at the very first start of the video? "All the way from the start I could feel it in my heart like......." vocals. Thanks so much bro.

very helpfull video bro! Two questions: 1. If I doenst have 2 Backing Tracks for the Main Vox, could I imitate that technique by pulling up a Doubler on an aux-track? 2. Is it better to mix the vocals in the project where you are producing the track, or is it better to export the track and mix to vocals on top of it? I ask because I have the feeling that I dont get that "glue" when I mix the vocals with the final track. Greets from germany! :)
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 5 жыл бұрын
hey Norbert, sure you could use a doubler, just make sure that you detune / pan them slightly differently. The important thing is that the takes are not identical - this is actually what makes the effect work well is having different takes. The second question is a matter of preference. If I'm producing the track, I personally like to record vocals in a separate session. My production sessions tend to have a lot going on so it helps free up CPU and resources.

Sean, a question about the backing tracks: since you feeding them to the bus on a very low volume, wouldn't it mess up the compressor settings for them (because of the threshold)?
@SelectGameboy

Hey sean, question for you! What are your thoughts on making eq boosts on the vocal? I always see you make boosts at the top end around 10-15k to give it air but never around the 200-250 area to get the warmer mids of the vocal out or the 500 area or even the 800-1.5k area to make it more aggressive/present. An example of a artists vocals I love is drakes! His vocals are so present yet they are so clean and warm and just sound good. How can I achieve a similar sound to that on the vocals when mixing songs? I would really appreciate it if you could give me some tips. Thanks and keep up the great work as always!! 🙏🏻💪🏼

Hey Sean, great video....Any particular reason that you use stereo plugins on your vocals that are mono? I also seen in some of your other videos that you used stereo plugins on your kicks, etc. I have read to use mono plug-ins on mono audio sources. Whats your take?

Cool mixing session 😀👍 sounds like Christian rap 🎤🗿 The high end shaping of the lead vocal was very nice🔥💪 This is a great channel with quality content 👍🔥 My opinion & feedback is: 1. I would back the low pass filter down on your lead vox to 80Hz - 90 hz max 2. The H comp ( & other analog modeled plugins ) operates according to waves -18dbfs = 0Vu ... 3. It’s best to not clip any plugins, any tracks, or busses. When you bounce to disk you are not in 32 bit float ( most daw ) LPX can bounce 32 bit float recently but doesn’t import 32BF only 24 Bit. To import files to mix or master in LPX from another LPX session you have to bounce 24 bit & import 24 bit. Tpdf dither recommended 4. It is scientifically proven a human thinks louder always sounds “ better “!

I use stereo effects on aux tracks often (delays, reverbs, spatial effects, etc.) so it's better to have the flexibility... and it doesn't hurt if you don't end up using any stereo effects anyway :)
