Love this dude! We need more people talking about rates in this industry. So many people keep their rates a "secret" to their peers and I have no idea why. It helps us all if we help each other get better at the business.

Albums: 50% upfront and 25% half way through is a smart move. Maybe they only get mp3's until the final 25% is paid.

I was a student studying a bunch of music tech related things in the early 00's, and one of the side courses was music business, but they just don't teach what's in this vid (or at least didn't). They talk about lables and record deals yada yada ... but nothing about how you as engineer are actually going to make your own money running your own business selling your services direct to a client! It's all things you had to work out yourself when you actually start needing to ask people to give you money. It's some very useful info that I'm sure will not only be highly valuble to many just getting into mixing, but probably to quite a few people that have been doing it for some time as well (or into any business or trade at all really)!

It is a sad truth to education that the core skills of business and finances are left out so often. I had the same experience you did in music school. Thank god for the internet though!

@progressionspod it's because while the lecturers may be awesome at what they do they weren't successful doing the business side of things Most likely sometime you get the odd few that are successful but are teaching purely cause they enjoy Anyway, they weren't successful at the business side, so do you think they are gonna teach you about heat rates and when to charge different rates and so on ?

@@Notinserviceij Teachers follow a curriculum set out by the school/college/university. They don't wing it and make it up as they go (at least they shouldn't be, I'm sure some still do going by some of my highschool teatchers lol).

Thank you for this, it was a really good exercise to assess my own place in the mixing world. The difficult thing is to try and bypass the market rates around and charge what you think you're worth, I'm at the point where I charge solely on the basis of having enough clients to keep busy. I've been pondering charging more but I am a bit worried that I won't have enough clients. At my level (not my day job, doing indie music, 25 years experience), people still expect the mix to be dirt cheap. I wonder if charging more would actually send a message that gets me more serious clients (i.e. clients that appreciate the value of a mix more) or if I'm shooting myself in the foot. 😊

I always have a hard time pricing myself as an engineer because I also have 3 music performance degrees including a masters in jazz and contemporary music. I also understand some EE and coding. I'm not exactly a beginning mixer because I've been working on my own projects and projects for friends since high-school but I don't necessarily have a lot of places to point to for "results" because I haven't saved most of it, but I also need to feed myself and pay rent. I haven't been making as much as a performer or recording artist since 2020 so I'm in a tight spot. I've been charging 90 usd a track for unlimited revisions but it's not sustainable. I have a studio as well. Should I switch to hourly, or is my cumulative experience, ear, and access to equipment and software worth charging more?

You say you have the skills. find the people that will give you great songs and then create those results you are capable of. Now that you have 3-5 Solid songs, set your rates at least 180-225 USD. At least! This gives you at least a little breathing room to properly prep, and offer all the extra deliverables at the end. create a good preset message you can modify that includes the process and the value you deliver that many artists may not consider in the early stages. Bless best of luck!

Chasing money is such a pain in the ass. I personally like getting everything upfront, but sometimes it’s not an option. At the end of the project turns out, that client cannot pay me back unless they make any money from that project I worked on. It is completely ridiculous, this stops my business from progression. Cannot pay my bill with the work I have done for people. Waiting 4-7 months to be paid is so stupid... It’s time to make changes, Ive really done it all wrong…
