We can’t be two places at once, but we often do have to mix for two *completely different places at once.
I’ve mixed hundreds of corporate shows where I’m expected to have the house mix dialed in as well as a polished stream feed going to a remote audience. Although they’re often listening to the exact same sources, these audiences need very different treatment.
We’ll cover four essential differences between a house mix and a remote audience mix and how to make sure they’re both handled well.

Wow, this “firehose” has me drenched. Tons of data Michael, very quickly presented. I’ve got to listen to this one multiple times to interpret it thoroughly. But this video is extremely relevant to my operations, so “thank you” many, many times for it. Now, if I can just “come up for air” …

I find with bands, The vocals usually have to come down ~5db from where they are in the PA mix to be at a balanced level for a stream/recording feed. Also, the smaller the room is, the more boost you'll need for things with a lot of stage volume, like drums and guitar amps.

Good info! Glad to know I've been basically doing all of these here on campus but it's good to see the process and validate what I've been doing as pretty much correct. Never stop learning and improving!

Every now and then it’s encouraging to hear someone else affirm your methodology! And I still took away some great tips. Idea for a future video, unless I’ve missed it: deep dive into Dugan/AMM. I’d love to hear workflows and tips from someone who uses it so regularly.

A band definitely switches things up in terms of loudness and levels from live to broadcast. I've been getting common requests for an iso of the speaker so I've been using my stereo as the band main mix then combining the speaking, playback and music at 0 on the house matrix and levels adjust for equal loudness on the broadcast matrix. This also frees up the busses for a little group processing. I send me mono speaking buss to the camera also they want to capture with. On Yamaha the matrix can take inputs so I include "audience" mics there. So far on a Behringer they haven't wanted "room" but I'd probably need to use a couple of the busses in the current confirmation. I've been using the pultech on my stereo band for quickly modifying the warmth and brightness. It's great there but I don't like it on the speaking or playback. For mostly talking heads I would probably lean more toward this. I wish on Behringer the auto mixers weren't on the lower channels though. I like the idea of separate royalty free. That would be easier on a Yamaha. You could also link the 4 (or two stereo) channels together and they would ride together when fading them out or in.

holy this is so really great info that i hope to understand in the future. I'm trying to mix live stream and in house for a band playing music and aren't getting basic volume levels right and I think it's due to in house bleeding into the headset when I want to adjust the stream. Any tips on overcoming this first hurdle? I'm in the back of the room, relatively small and there's no quiet space without me leaving the room/building once the band starts playing

Awesome video! This scenario is done with a post fader mix correct? In which your live steam mix(faders) will follow your house mix(faders)?

Not sure about Michael but that's how I do it, yes. That way if someone grabs a mic and is louder than the last person, a quick pull down of the fader will also affect the stream pretty equally. Music fade in/out, etc., too.

Are you able to tune system remotely? Like if i had smarrt and login for the speaker processor and mic and a usb interface and FaceTime going? Or do you need to be there in person? Just was wondering.

I have done a remote session, but it was more of a diagnostic of an existing system than a commissioning of a new system. All that being said, yes having two machines that I can remote into and operate while you move around a mic is very possible.
