I come back and visit a lot of your videos periodically as my understanding of things becomes more clear. Your channel is hands down the best channel for understanding mixing and sound from an objective standpoint. Other channels use terminology like “seating it in the mix” or “creating separation” while never explaining objectively, or scientifically, what all that means. I’ve learned eq and compression mostly from YOU, and now when I watch other channels I actually know what they’re talking about, and I roll my eyes at their vagueness and think of you. Thanks, Mike! You are the absolute best!

I've never run across this information before. I keep coming back to this for a refresher. I'm learning that the clearer I can think, the clearer my mixes are. This is just a whole new area of depth. This, combined with spatial effects, panning, and selective mid-side eq, will no doubt take my mixes to the next level. Thank you.

Great video! As far as things like the sustain character being dependent on how high the note is, something I’ve always wondered with EQing is that does an EQ setting affect different notes of the bass the same? For example, if you have that mid boost to translate into smaller speakers, would that affect a lower note such as an open E the same as a higher note such as an open G? Harrison makes an interesting plugin called Bass Character which is somewhat of an EQ that follows the fundamental note. You can boost or cut the fundamental as well as boost or cut the higher harmonics. I’m wondering why EQs like that aren’t more popular

Hey Mike great tutorials, I like your attention to detail. And speaking of details, it would be great if you zoomed in more often when you're describing and changing parameter values in the plug-ins or DAW settings because most of the time it's too tiny to see, even on big displays. Thanx and keep up the good work!

EQ first, Compression 2nd or vice versa?
@mixingwithmike
@mixingwithmike 5 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking the EQ should be after the compression, but the real world answer is, which ever one sounds better.
@callmedeno
@callmedeno 6 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how compression would bring focus to a fundamental frequency. I have been working on the assumption that compression will make take the loudest parts (in this case the fundamental frequency you've highlighted with eq) and bring it closer in volume to the lower volume frequencies. So in my head I'm thinking, you eq'd some focus, and then squashed it down closer to the unfocused parts of the sound. Can anyone help me understand why this isnt the case?

Jeez that was long-winded convoluted babble which didn't explain anything? What's a transient frequency? What's a sustain frequency? How do you find fundamental frequencies? Not even any musical examples? Blah... wasted my time.
@devalah
@devalah 3 жыл бұрын
Yeap, that attitude will surely take you far! If you didn't find any value to this video (and just for your curiosity notice your singularity in that by taking a look at the other comments) maybe you should go even more fundamental than this. I know it's been a year so i really hope now you've come to a place where you can appreciate this knowledge and the guy for sharing it.
