Took an amazing sound, Robert Johnson, a masterpiece in history, and make it a whole new thing that’s super dope. He took art, and elevated to a point where it’s a whole new piece of art. Amazing. I remember first watching the documentary, and this is what locked me in.

First I saw this clip (back in 2006), then I bought the DVD, then I bought a pair of 1210mk2s, then I hunted down both these records (wasn't easy nor cheap back then) and then I tried to learn it. Obviously I was never able to play it anywhere near how MMM, but at least I learned how to scratch a little, learned to mix, collected 100s of vinyls over the years and now my 14 year old daughter is listening to music on those decks every day and she started collecting her own records. And it all started with this youtube video.

As a musician myself, I like to lean towards the values of exploring the potentialities and building on the static (i.e., dead) works of others. This is not plagiarism, mind you, but growth. An experiment that succeeds or fails based on the listener's personal tastes and subjective judgments. Speculating on how the deceased composer might have thought about Mike's scratch is counterproductive. Artists often want their music to outlive them. Others are content to make music in this life.

@AbraXaDabra Think of it this way AbraXaDabra ... Robert Johnson here is being celebrated and his the life of his music is being prolonged, extended, expounded upon. Mike is slowing it down so you can hear it better, as if using a microscope to magnify the image of the music. Mike is giving credence to specific portions of Johnson's music that cause thrill and magic in the ear. Mike expands these moments and creates. Johnson would be blown away.
