Miyajima Island is Full of Surprises 🇯🇵

Our travels in Japan continue as we set sail for the island of Miyajima in Hiroshima bay. The name translates to "Shrine Island" and is world renowned for the incredible Itsukushima Shrine which has the only torii gate in Japan that is built over water. The shrine itself is also built over water and when we arrive on the island we visit it shortly after eating a delicious Pakistani curry in a traditional Japanese tea room. Miyajima is thought to be the island where God lives in Japanese culture and is home to free roaming deer. After visiting the shrine we head to the top of Mount Misen on the Miyajima ropeway which is the other main attraction on the island. It is located in Momijidani Park and we ride it to the top of the mountain, enjoying panoramic views of the inland sea and surrounding islands. We catch a glimpse of the torii gate at high tide beneath the setting sun and also manage to try some famous Hiroshima bay oysters on the way back to the ferry port before catching the last ferry back to Hiroshima. Once we arrive at Hiroshima port we enjoy some delicious ramen cooked by an old Japanese lady before heading back to our sleepy island of Etajima.
