These are my first reactions to watching Helloween's Eagle Fly Free from the album (audio), Helloween perform Live, & Miyako from Lovebites covering the track on piano.

Absolutely. Ignoring the different styles of the vocalists, I think that musically the LOVEBITES version is superior (but then, I'm a little bit biased).

Awesome reaction. Helloween is one of my favorite bands. You can see where Haruna gets her influences from. It sounds just like her style of playing. Miyako created a beautiful arrangement of this classic metal song and surprised us all. Despite my expectation of greatness going in, she managed to exceed that. Miyako is truly a phenomenal musician.

@@ChadTheDragonLord I was into LOST HORIZON. They only gave us 2 albums before breaking-up, but those two albums are also at the top of the power-metal historical mountain. They were from Sweden.

You should pick the clip from Awakening ; Awake Again From Abyss... You can see how great Asami.. Miho.. Miyako.. Midori and Haruna played Eagle Fly Free... And... you can realize where is Haruna got her style of drumming.. Helloween is Haruna favourite band...

For some reason that I don't know most people have ignored Helloween for years in order to listen Guns and Rose, Metallica, etc. I found out the German band only in 2019. In my humble opinion, they are much, much better these other bands I mentioned above (or at least some of their songs are, such as this masterpiece called Eagle Fly Free)

No love for Tommy Johansson? His cover of this song is fire! And the song inspired the song, Above The Sky by his band Majestica. Another Helloween track is I Want Out...also covered by Tommy and his brother in law, Kim Arvidsson, and that can be found on the latter's YT channel!

Great idea to show these back to back. The live performance is so much better than the official album version it's not funny. Have to say, Kiske is not my cup of tea, and a major reason I never became a fan of the band. But great writing and they can obviously play. And the writing is what laid the basis for Miyako's gorgeous composition, which is far more than a cover. Thanks for putting this together.

Still listening to helloween even at the age of 48! Michael kiske vocal capability is, top notch even for his age, that recording was at the age of 19 or 20 i think... What a legend... You got to listen tommy Johansson version of that song too.... Also, try helloween keeper of the seven keys track( a masterpiece)

I've never really given Helloween a good listen to, but I'm going to make the effort to have a listen to their catalogue. If they're good enough for Haruna, then they're probably good enough for me.

Miyako's cover is definitely preferred to the original. Helloween seemed to overdo the power chords (for my taste anyway) even though they clearly have the talent to play some crazy stuff. Thankfully, Miyako pulled most of her cover from the vocal line which is about the only place to find a melody in the original. If the rest of Miyako's EP is this good, it is going to get a lot of play time.

Helloween was a non thing outside of their homeland, even in their prime. They were unknown, and mostly because they were more of a not in the usa played band. I have a feeling they never "made it" out of Germany and Europe. They only have one or two tracks that were mildly hits, most of their catalog is run of the mill average with few stand outs I am a classic metalhead from the 1970s to now, and I never heard of them until YT and only in the last couple years. That doesn't make them bad, it just puts them way down the list of band recognition. There is a long line of metal bands that most of the usa never heard of, because they never made it to American radio(never charted internationally) nor ever toured in country. The majority of the usa would have never heard the name. It isn't unusual.

The USA is a bit of an anomoly though. It is possibly the most inward looking country on the planet, with much of the population surprisingly unaware of things that most people in other Western countries take as common knowledge.

They toured the US. They were heavily played on MTV and were even invited by them to participate in the first Headbanger's Ball tour. Unfortunately, despite their growing success, legal battles with their record label that lasted 3 years killed all the momentum they'd built, and when the legal issues were resolved, grunge had taken over in America, and the band themselves went in a rather substantially different direction than what they had been doing. Oh, and they pretty much created the entire genre of what's known today as power metal, so, you know, there's that.

I am from USA. I bought their album on a whim from a record store and it was amazing stuff. The album was Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1. Most of their other albums weren't as good, but KOTSK was an amazing album. Kiske's vocals are some of the best you will ever hear in metal.

Nah, Helloween was very well-known in the USA. Same with GAMMA RAY. After the grunge crap, there was an explosion of symphonic power-metal bands. The best of course was the mighty SYMPHONY X. Led by the maestro Michael J Romeo.
