Honestly, I think that’s part of what makes Hidetaka’s work so good. The worlds he makes aren’t grimdark out of pessimism, they’re like. That to serve the themes of triumph in the face of impossible odds. The 'typical' Medieval Europe setting, with a lot of themes of godliness/divinity (that feel vaguely Christian at times with the cathedrals etc, especially in Demon's Souls where the deity is just called "god"). But through a Japanese lens. Bloodborne as well, that Victorian/gothic setting but through a Japanese lens. It's just... artistically striking? Idk how to describe it.

Hayao is little misunderstood tho. Because even tho he says grim stuff what he really means is that the world is corrupted, like for example that quote about Manhattan, he just says that all of this monetary system is fake and the worst kind of people chase money and build these abominations like Manhattan to showcase their false god. And he just says that he would like to see that to transform to original form where there is nature and peace. Also that quote about anime being mistake be says that in the context of anime that he makes is really expensive and for many many years they were barely breaking even, also the process itself is really draining and Hayao is really involved into his projects, so considering his age I think he is just tired of this work, and just making normal movies would be easier, cheaper and probably at the end making more money.

I think it still comes off as highly judgmental to say those kind of things. I really wouldn't agree with "The Works" section of Hayao miyazaki. His works aren't targeted towards kids. Characters aren't easily separated in good or bad such as Eboshi, Howl, Baba, Jiro, etc. His themes are very prevalent but also subtle. Such as envitomental or consequences of techonogical advancements. Despite not growing up with his films, no other film gives me nostalgia or magical feeling than his films. He's also the co creater of Ghibli and, while there are other directors like Isao, he is the biggest contributer of its success. Studio ghibli is considered the equivalent of pixar or Disney (Though this is more coporate). Studio Ghibli is recognized worldwide.

I think I give Works to Hayao for variety. While there are core feelings to what makes his work feel like Hayao Miyazaki, Nausicaa, My Neighbour Totoro, and the Boy and the Heron feel very different to each other. Where in Hidetaka’s case, there are a lot more parallels in his stories, sometimes a bit too much. The world of decay can only feel fresh so many times.

When Miyazaki was beaten as a child, the belt was swung with a delay so that he would not dodge, everyone knows that. But few people know the continuation of this great story. One day, Miyazaki adapted to this, memorized all possible belt frames, and no longer took damage. But his father did not lose his head, and spent 2 years trying to surprise his beloved son again. Now he dealt 10 times more damage with a belt, jumped like crazy all over the room, and also used quick combinations of punches (mixed with the good old delays), which made Miyazaki's eyes did not have time to focus on him. But the father knew that this alone was not enough to surprise his son, so now his belt always caused damage to the area, in case his son wanted to roll over his back. And even when Miyazaki thought he could safely drink his bottle of fanta, the belt attack took him across the room. These memories inspired Miyazaki so much that he dedicated an entire DLC to his game Elden Ring to this.

I grew up on the Metal Gear Solid games. I still love them, I didn't touch Dark Souls until I was 17. When I finally finished it, my entire outlook on games was changed. Going from hours of cutscnes where everything is explained in painstaking detail to bloodstains and item descriptions was extremely jarring but I'm commited to MILF ideology now. Man I Love Fromsoftware. I've killed everything from Demon's Souls to Elden Ring except for the DLC for ER. I'm working on it but it just came out yesterday.

Loved the films of Miyazaki, loved the games of Miyazaki, it's hard to choose between Miyazaki and Miyazaki, but I honestly love Miyazaki more because of the things that his art gives to you and also because he loves my country, so Miyazaki is the final choice. Yes, I've decided to use just the last names for the meme and for confusing you and no, I will not tell which one I'm referring to.

I am really disappointed that for the average gamer, Hidetaka's storytelling is for people with the internet. In reality, the story simply is not given, it is shown in locations and items. You need to be an archeologist and deduct the story by yourself.

It would not be dark souls if they told you the story straight, I get your pov but if you are playing the game you can read the items and if you don't wanna bother yourself just read/watch it online

I am a big fan of games that have a relaxed story. Games like hollow knight or zelda. Technically the story to you becoming elden lord/lord of cinder is the games story which means every person will experience a unique story.

i personally loved the lore from elden ring but i gotta admit that the way it is presented through item descriptions isn't the most satisfying way of consuming a story. i like the visual storytelling aspect and i kinda get that it would be hard to give that much lore in another way besides item descriptions but i'll still rather go and watch lore videos than read the items. one could argue that if we had them in cinematics it would take away from the action and immersion but i feel reading the items has the same effect. i also understand that miyazaki has the theme of overcoming struggle to gain fulfillment in all aspects on his game but for me it wouldn't hurt making the story and the quests a little easier to follow. that's basically my only nitpick in elden ring, even though i still consider it a 10/10 masterpiece.

You dont need the internet you can piece together the major plot points with some investment. You need the internet if you want piece every single detail.

​@@kevo300 there are people making maps with all the events and lore, cooperating with other creators and there is still not a clear enough image of the story. yes we all know the ring shattered, the demi gods fought with no winner and then we came in and got all the pieces to become lord and set a new order but the further you try to go deeper than that, the more convoluted and unclear the story becomes.

Is it not a sequence? Beautiful and happy worlds are made by pessimistic people, maybe because it's the only way for them to hide from reality they hate. Dark and depressing worlds are created by truly optimists, so they can show you that the real world is still not that bad

As a general rule, Hayao's movies make you think you've understood everything but in reality you've not grasped even a third of the complexity while Hidetaka's games make you think you have understood nothing while in reality you probably know more or less everything due to their simplistic narratives.

Cynicism is a defense mechanism for many people. When it has no bounds, it can turn into spitefulness. Hayao may well be a decent person, but perhaps he feels the pain from his younger years and tries to shield himself from things that could hurt him again. If he crosses a line, it might be because of a deep wound that won't heal. This is not an excuse, just a possible explanation. I don't know the man, I could be reading him completely wrong.

Really goes to show the ones trying to project so much happiness are the ones suffering the most. I mean just look at Robin Williams. Most people that suffer try to cover up their pain with happiness. Some people embrace it and learn from it, and become better people as a result. I think that's the biggest difference between these two men. Everyone suffers. It's just all about how you choose to deal with it.

I think Hayao Miyazaki is just tired. he's old and was born during a really miserable time, and animation can be unbelievably soul crushing to both do and direct. Remember, the man is 83 years old.

Miyazaki as a person is miserable. Miyazaki's work makes you think he's never felt, nor given love. Maybe the reason it's like this is because Miyazaki gives YOU all the pain and despair, while Miyazaki gives you great joy and is left with nothing but his pessimism.

I have a theory, that the majority of Miyazaki's films are more connected then we think. With multiple species of animals and similar architecture showing up in different movies. While you could say that its down to creative creative similarities. The inclusion of the fox squirrel kind of breaks this idea. The fox squirrel shows up in, Kiki's delivery service, obviously nausica, castle in the sky, tototdo, the cat returns, poco roco, princes mononoke, I believe the time line is this. Mononoke, howls moving castle, poco roco, Kiki's, cat returns, nausica, castle in the sky, then tototdo (set in the present).

i relate this to something i see in music often, hayao is like the arctic monkeys of music, a master of their craft to be sure, but with hooks for the masses. Meanwhile hidetaka is like the guitarist for some avant garde technical death metal band with 7 minute long solo's and 600 different 1/8th notes a minute all arpeggiated perfectly, but the only people who love it are people who are already in the community (metal nerds for this example)

It makes sense for Hidetaka to be ultimatly hopeful. Why even make a dark, cruel world if there’s not even a glimpse of hope. Elden ring is a good example, the world is ultimatly dark and most don’t get a happy ending, but a few characters can have happy endings through your own effort. There’s no reason to care about a world like that if good isn’t possible.

Although I agree with your opinions, I think you severely underestimate just how wise and ambiguous Hayao Miyazaki can be with his stories. He has an extreme amount of nuisance in his characters, even for a kids films. Which can lead these films to be studied deeper. A lot of his films are most definitely going to be rewatched to be pieced together, but I would like to note one other thing. Japanese story telling, well Asian storytelling is usually never linear. They like their side quests, which is why both of these peoples works can be confusing to understand. I’d say Hayao has a lot of environmental and humanitarian themes in his films, but they can be so subtle the characters feel real, while Hidetaka is more of a cosmic horror, mythological writer poking fun at universal concepts. They are the perfect examples of “show don’t tell.”

Video games have been super hard since early early on. It is a very popular style Just being clear that dark souls has nothing to do with the creation of hard games. That is not something they pioneered I’d imagine it’s moreso all of their creation-world-building, story, combat, enemies, details, etc.

Games were hard back then to inflate playtime because games had a limited file storage back then. Games these days are easier because they can have larger file sizes which means more content. This is why difficult video games are pretty rare in the AAA scene. Even nintendo which used to make difficult games are making easier games to appeal to a more casual audience and their developers don't really believe that making a game super hard is fun anymore. Souls-like modernized the really difficult game genre by making it super hard but fun. Most retro games I've played make be rage quit at their unfair difficulty and tedium but souls-like don't do that which shows how well designed they are.

Souls games are less to do with being just hard and more to do with being punishing and have a proper learning curve. Theses games strongly require the player to learn from their own mistakes to overcome the challenges they face and figure out everything on their own. The games also usually have ways to make the experience a lot easier, if you look for it long enough. They can severely punish inexperienced players but massively reward experienced ones. Knowledge is key in souls games.

I always kept saying to people I knew: if I had a nickel for every time a man called Moyazaki was a genius. I’d have two nickels, it’s not a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. Also I do think hayao is a somber man because in a way he saw the beginning of things and their corruption like the anime industry and I think all if us agree it is currently not the greatest(ahem mappa ahem). He was also born in a trying time and was fed a lot of hateful views that shaped him.

I love both creators, because they’re made me feel emotion that other media hasn’t made me. One sided is sadness, love, happiness, and joy. While the other, is Adrenaline, excitement, pride, and cockiness. I love watching characters make mistakes and now making mistakes when I play. two sides on the same coin

Thank you for letting me remember the point against most people. I am not cynical but if you ask me, I think wanting to be inspired by any entity itself is a terribly shallow thought. You get inspired, you don't get to be a judge of what it is like it is a multiple choice of all things. It's not inherently bad nor wrong, but people get too hung up on this weird balance scale of good to bad when you can just see things for what they are. There's no 'you', 'us' or 'we' in their comparison, neither is 'bad', 'good', 'neutral' . These all takes away the chance of diving deep into a person's point of view. Personality is metric that's overused and extremely pointless to someone like me who's stuck here figuring out "What's so bad about being passionate about his craft, how is that related?" My sensibilities can be a bit different, but I stand these points.

Hayao Miyazaki, while being a revolution in the animation industry, treats his staff very badly. For a self proclaimed 'socialist' who spouts utopian nonsense, the working conditions under him are brutal, or so I've heard. Multiple young animators quit the industry entirely and came to hate animation after working under him, and apparently this toxic work culture is what drove Yoshifumi Kondo's to his death (animation director for Princess Mononoke) As much as I respect him, I just cannot abide by a guy who abuses his staff, especially while claiming to believe in workers rights. Hidetaka is of a younger generation, and his story and how he rose to become head of FromSoft is downright inspiring and unprecedented. Dude was literally some manager in an office at 30. Ten years later, he was at the head of From Soft. Also seems like a kinder and more optimistic man who did not stand on the back of others. Both are geniuses.

I think it was really honest of Hayao to criticize modern anime as trash. Most Japanese are non confrontational and will try to have something nice to say, let alone criticize the very industry they are a part of. I can imagine the dismay he must feel that his works exist side by side with all the ecchi harems that simply exist for merchandising. There is definitely a saturation of shallow, gimmicky anime. The amount of anime you could consider universally a work of art are few and far between.

I totally agree with you to some extent. But at the end of the day anime is animation and it doesn't always need to inspire or convey a message or a strong story. Some people watch anime for the art, the interesting character design, or sometimes, well, just for the animation lol. Granted, some productions feel insultingly bland, however I still think it feels very snobby for Hayao to say something like this. I think it rarely serves anyone to be that cynical.
