What I like most about Elden Ring, is that it makes me feel like I'm inside some kind of mythology, like no other game. Miyazaki knows English though and he is probably pretty good at it as well, just in written form probably listening too but he doesn't speak it fluently. He can't speak English but he did mentioned that he reads English fictions and that's why the English dialogue is written like this cause he wants it to sound like an ancient story.

I’ve always actually wondered about the translations in souls games. Because I don’t know anything about Japanese, I don’t know what style or manner of speaking they do in Japanese, but (similar to Dragons Dogma) the style of English speaking that is used in Souls games is not normal or contemporary English in any sense. They use words that aren’t used anymore, phrases and speaking styles from hundreds of years ago. I always wondered how they not only get it from Japanese to English, but also from English to a mix of older forms of English. I also wonder if they are using medieval Japanese styles of speaking in the Japan version.
@JoeShufferton5 ай бұрын
@@TEFFTPATTERN The Japanese versions of the Souls games are also English voiced. Been that way ever since Demon's Souls, with the only exception being Sekiro.
@tinius92765 ай бұрын
Honestly, Miyazaki is such an enigma that I think it helps him to cast people in languages he doesn't know. What I infer is that he probably sits on the call and tries to hear the emotional response coming from the voice. The feel of the voice is easier to understand when it is the only part you understand of the speech. The same phenomenon exists in anime, where it almost becomes easier to understand the emotional subtext due to the lack of literal understanding of language.
@jameslecitron10395 ай бұрын
He definitly knows english though. That’s why he is very peculiar on the texture of each word.
@TubularBellsRequiem65315 ай бұрын
@@jameslecitron1039 it was said in the video they needed a translator, so it's safe to assume he doesn't KNOW English, but he understands the emotions and the sounds coming from these words, even if he doesn't understand the words themselves
@jameslecitron10395 ай бұрын
@@TubularBellsRequiem6531 It’s not because you know the language that you don’t need a translator in a professional context. Miyasaki said multiple times in interview that the cryptic storytelling of his games was based on his experience as a child trying to decipher Western fantasy book written in english. If his english was poor but sufficient to comprehend these novels as a kid, it’s safe to assume he has at least a passable level in english today. But in a professional context, things might get lost in translation and it’s better to call on a professional to communicate. When using a 2nd or 3rd language, needing a translator =/= not understanding the language.
@TubularBellsRequiem65315 ай бұрын
@jameslecitron1039 that's fair, I never knew that about him as a child, but it makes sense that'd he'd have gained a greater understanding of english based on that. And that bit about translators makes sense too, I never thought of it that way but yes, it makes absolutely sense to have a translator when speaking a second or third language, just to be safe with that language.
@tinius92765 ай бұрын
@@jameslecitron1039 I might have written my original point quite heavy-handed because I know that Miyazaki has an understanding of the English language. However, I don't think that takes away from the original point. I still think it's sometimes easier to listen to the emotional response of speech through languages that you lack expertise in. Do you disagree or did you just want to add that he can speak and knows English?

I wonder if Stephen Boxer knew he was doing the voice of what would be the final boss of the Dark Souls series. He did Gowry in ER, but he’s referring to doing Gael’s lines from DS3 Ringed City in this clip shown in the video. Even if he had no clue how important that guy’s lines and dying noises were, it seems that he picked up on it since he said he was nervous. 😅 I highly doubt he knew that much about Gael, because they don’t tell the actors too much. Even Igon’s VA had no idea he was a dragon hunter. It’s cool hearing from the actors who bring our favourite characters to life. 😸

What a genius. The amount of care and attention and detail he puts into the games down to direction of voice acting. We're so blessed.

It’s crazy how I can hear Boc in the voice actors normal speaking voice, just less exaggerated. Same with Yura.

i love that they found appropriate actors for every role instead of the usual famous voice actors who just do 10 different voices. reminds me of rockstar games and mass effect

What this interview really shows me is that Miyazaki is very proud of his work and the proof is how meticulous he is, even based on Marland's interview here 3:48 he listens closely to just auditions and just decides how even the smallest sound in a character's voice should be corrected until it suits his vision of said character. This is a man who has the proper skills to run a company and make amazing products.

The humility and professionalism on display by these voice actors is a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of what's going on in the wider entertainment industry. You can tell everyone involved gave it their best and had an awesome time doing in.

I am actually perpetually in awe both by the writing and the voice acting in from games. mystified since its directed by a japanese director. the phrases often sound shakesperean, archaic without sounding contrived at all. there is such wonderful texture to it all. to use a cliché, actors do breathe life into these characters. I love the work you people do. thank you.

Only got into the Soulsborne series late last year (started with Sekiro then Bloodborne DS3 and then Elden Ring) but honestly they are the greatest games ever created, the lore in these is so fascinating to me having to actually listen and indulge into every detail, Miyazaki does not miss man I appreciate him so much for giving me a new found obsession

Miyazaki is one of those rare autistic guys who the world lucked out with and rather than get obsessed with Factorio or collecting snail shells, we instead got a guy who obsessively builds extremely detailed worlds in a style we almost never see outside of From (beautiful but tragic and decaying), and he is so aligned with this one obsession that he doesn't even feel the need to play his own games, and apparently doesn't at all - he just creates them then goes onto the next one.

@pancakewafflez Hideteka Miyazaki is far from a normal human. He's a legend. Autism made him that way. Autism is not an insult by a long shot. In fact, we get the best work from him as a result. People with autism are extremely intelligent, they just see the world differently.
