I like how at 0:55, the boy takes off his hat to reveal an incredibly apathetic, disinterested, and dull face. He doesn’t care what the “people” think of him, he bottles it up, all that pent up rage leads to the manifestation of his anger. It’s interesting to think that, if it weren’t for his hat, he’d have a plain dull and disinterested face the whole time, instead of the illusion of an almost surprised and curious face.

I was very curious about the bird symbolism here, the 3 hairs on the kid remind me of a rooster's comb, there's the rooster weather-vane, and during the beginning sequence when the kid's dark side is forming, there are portions where they explode into more feathers. While googling what Coquetterie means, I noticed that the pronunciation sounds a lot like the word Cockatrice, the mytholocical creature with the body of a dragon, and the head of a rooster, who can kill things if it's eyes meet theirs. There's a few lines about being viewed, or the lack thereof, and of course there's plenty of killing during the red scenes. It may also have something to do with the kid's eyes turning red at the end. Too much of a himbo to tie it all together but the connection seems to be there!!

I think this song is about a boy trying to earn a living from his dancing. The adults seem to make fun of him (the ghost-looking people walking around the town). So the boy looks like he had some suppressed anger from the mocking, which is the other persona seen slashing the people of the town. throughout the song he keeps asking ''am i a good dancer?'' (judging by the lyrics), but he doesnt get the recognition he craves from the audience. he enjoys dancing (again, lyrics) but he's tired from being mocked and laughed at. i think the boy confronted his anger and seemed to accept it in the end, though im not sure about what happened during the last seconds. On a side note, I LOVE how Miyashita-san is able to express such emotions through his singing. it is truly incredible. edit: i made another comment w the translation!! its not perfect but i also added some phrase explanations

ima add to what u said- i think that the shadow figure killing people is representing his anger there. later on in the mv some neon graffiti drawing things are going around and dancing like crazy which makes me think he's hallucinating because he hasn't eaten in a while bc he isn't earning anything, just getting mocked. not eating as much as he should and his anger are making him go insane. at the end he's dancing with that shadow figure but i don't think it represents his anger there,, i think it represents his death. the figure disappears and the boy doesn't appear at the end, however his dog does and he's dirty and lying unconsciously on the ground.. then that thing comes out of him which i think means he's slowly dying as well. this mv is amazing o-o

We use coquetterie here for : being fashionable or being fancy. "Coquet" is to define someone who looks like he took care of having a fine looking outfit. But I'm not sure there's a real translation.

My theory: The song is about a boy living on a dirty street with only his dog. He tries to make money by dancing, but people treat him like trash. Therefore, he hates them. The monster who wishes to hurt those people is, at the same time, a personification of death. Everytime the boy is on the verge of starving (he's so hungry he even has hallucinations, we can see that when the graffiti starts moving/we see everything in bright colors ), Death comes to him, but he rejects it. It's until one day the boy kills the dog, or the dog just dies of old age or hunger (we see it following the shadowy figure/Death ) , and the boy feels sad about it, so when the next time he hallucinates comes, he finally decides that living isn't worth it, and ,, dances" with Death, wchich means he dies. Also I want to add that the boy doesn't seem to view Death as something bad and scary. Yes, it has sharp teeth and it behaves aggressively, but I think it might be just a result of his hate for people - he wanted to hurt them, but he was too weak, so instead he projected all of these thoughts and wishes on Death, which made dying more desirable for him. There might be a lot more to it tho. Edit: So,after watching the MV again,I realized something that I want to point out.The boy's and the monster's charachter designs look kinda like a rooster, especially around 1:21. We can also see a rooster at 0:12 , 1:14 , 3:46.I believe that this may have a connection with the title of the song ,,Coquetterie dancer", as the word ,,Coquetterie" is french ,and a rooster is one of the symbols of France. It may also have some hidden symbolism.

I thought so too. Maybe the shadowy figure is the monster that was born inside of the boy, and he became the devil when he decided to kill the dog. Or, it might mean that someone else killed the dog and the boy’s anger caused him to become the devil. When the dog started following the shadow, it looked like the shadow’s eyes were looking back to see if it was following. Maybe the shadow=the devil lured the dog to his death so that it could make a contract with the boy. In the mc it looks a bit like the boy and shadow kissed, which might indicate that he agreed to sign the contract and let the devil live in his body in exchange for getting revenge.

My theory: The boy enjoys dancing and is trying to make money off it, but the townspeople constantly mock him,. This causes him to feel angry and resentful towards them, but he atempts to hide it. At night, when no one is around, he fantasizes about hurting the people who mock him, which is the only way he lets his anger get out. The trippy scene where all those graffity drawing move around is him trying to distract himself from his anger. The dog, I think, is a representation of support, someone who supports what he does. One day, after represing his anger for way too long, he looses control of it and hurts his support. In the end he accepts his anger and learns to deal with it properly.

1:50 this section makes him seem lost and confused in a crazy or wacky delusion through both the music and visuals 2:05 but then at this section, the feeling becomes softer, more careful but it's building up to something 2:21 feels like some sort of release. Someone has a theory that the part right after this is the Coquetterie Dancer accepting death through dancing with the hallucination of himself/personification of his anger towards the vegetable people. So the freeing but sentimental feeling of this part could be because he got free through dying. (I don't understand Japanese, so correct me if any of this is wrong, but here's my thoughts on the just the mv without knowing the lyrics) This song appears to be about a poor man in a isolated town with his dog, where he dances to make a living. One day, several people outwardly boo him and make a fool of him (1:03), which manifests a type of vanity within the man (1:09). [The reason that this is vanity has to deal with the word 'Conquetterie', which is also known as vanity, or caring about one's fashion/appearance.] Night time rolls around, which is when his vanity attacks those that have scorned him / made fun of him by dancing (1:22), making him the 'Coquetterie Dancer'. [This may imply that the man's vanity had caused for him to attack several people at night, potentially killing them.] After this, the man reflects about his actions, seeming to regretting them, shown by having his head in his hands (2:07). The morning after the incident, his companion notices a remnant of his vanity, chasing after it, potentially in hopes of stopping it (2:13). When the companion manages to catch up with the vanity, they're either tainted or killed by it (2:34) [when it dies/gets contaminated by the vanity] and (4:01) [the body lying motionless, with vanity (?) sprouting from it]. The man then loses hope (2:48) not knowing where to turn to, when his vanity reaches a point where they start to become one (3:16) to (3:23). In the end, the man is consumed by his vanity, now truly being the 'Coquetterie Dancer' (3:37). After this, it then pans to the companion, with vanity (?) sprouting from their body (4:05). The vanity that the man experiences is one where he was somewhat fond of himself, with any of that being destroyed when he was ridiculed. This vanity then turns into a monster that hurts/kills/taints others, even the one person that cared about him, until the vanity consumes him entirely and they become one. [I'm sorry if this is entirely incorrect or if it sounds like a rambling, but this song is really mesmerizing and really interesting, so I wanted to give my take on it.]

Theory time! First of all, let's start from the title. "Coquetterie" means external appearance, looks. This refers to the constant conflict between the boy in society and his inner feelings, in a way that resembles Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The main character is a poor boy who dances in the streets to make a living. However, the people passing by not only ignore, but also mock him, because he's an outcast, someone who's forgotten by society. Those people look inhuman and shadowy, which manifests their complete lack of compassion. Because of his lower social role, the boy can't rebel to them, as he would be alone against the world. It's not a case if the environment reminds of a Victorian city: in the Victorian Age there was a deep constrast between the extreme poverty of the lower class and the careless well-being of the richest. The dog represents the MC's social appearence and morality. It's calm, battered and not very noticeable in a street, just like the boy. It's always with him during the day (notice that the sunlight is a simbol of positivity and purity and with that people can see well). On contrast, the MC's demon represents his most secret feelings, the inconscious mind. It's interest how is colours are black (darkness and negativity) and red (blood, violence and passion), perfectly contrasting with the dog's white (positivity and innocence). It begins to make his appearance when the MC is being ignored and rises when he's being mocked: the demon represents his secret anger and frustration. These emotions then turn in a deep hate for the passers-by, which we can see when in his mind the demon kills them. If the dog appears in the morning, the demon appears at night, when the MC is alone in the streets: night has always simbolized the moment when a person can be in contact with themselves and see their most inner, socially unacceptable emotions and thoughts. However this demon can't be always hidden, as the MC's anger keeps growing. At 1:49 (of course at night) starts feeling that these emotions are getting more and more present: the figures in the graffiti can both be shadows of his emotions and the passerbies They get alive and fill all the space: the boy feels incredibly oppressed and can't think about anything else. Suddently the duality breaks: at 2:11 the demon exists from his mind and is visible in the outside world. The dog (coquetterie) follows it because it wants to keep things in order. But the emotions have gotten too strong: the demon kills the dog (the reddish black prevails on the white). That's why we see the dead dog at the end. Only the hate remains now. At 2:51 it reaches out a hand to the MC. Scenes of the boy dancing and the demon killing appear, showing us how the two, like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, are actually very similiar and one can't exist without the other. So at 3:12 they start dancing. Their movements are perfectly armonious because they are two pieces of the same being. The boy, who has always had the same tired, emotionless expression now starts showing his feelings: at first he's astonished and slightly scared by this new, weird figure, but as he gets confortable he starts getting more and more excited, until he finally dances with joy (dancing is a symbol of happiness, but before he was doing automatically, emotionlessly). Their splashes of colours mix perfectly because they are two parts of the same mind finally reunited after social conventions had divided them (by a psychanalytical point of view, this is the contact between the Ego and the Es, forgetting the Super Ego). At the end of the dance, the demon points its finger to the boy and then dissolves. It didn't die, but it's inside him. The MC's is astonished, because he understands that what he thought as something external, just because he had never met it before and its irrationality couldn't be explained with logic, is actually himself. The union (even if they have always been together) is represented by his eyes turning red, one of the demon's colors. At the end we see the dead dog: what remains of the MC's morality. The boy isn't there anymore because now his place is only the darkness. Before I said that the gloomy black of the passers-bye represents the fact that their humanity doesn't exist anymore. Now a shadowy black bud sprouts from the corpse of the dog. This can only means one thing: the bo'y has lost his innocence and he's now corrupted just like them (but because he's poor, probably he will become a criminal to survive).
