George Salazar sings this song like it's a real plea to someone else. The change in his tone and his animation of certain words like "bad" in I know things were bad... it's like you can hear actual despair in that word. I think he has a masterful grasp of phrasing, and better to hear the desperation in the word "bad" than to hear it sung perfectly or operatic. For a broadway singer, this is the holy grail. A spectator gets/feels more emotion in this way than having someone sing it perfectly. George is smart, and it shows. MJ simply flawless as usual.

It's crazy how well they did considering they're both singing in a key that they're not used to and there were a lot of technical difficulties before they recorded this. I think george said that they ended up singing this 9 times before they got it.

This wasn't a great match of voices. Her voice was too deep compared to him. Almost felt like two men singing.
