Scottie was a physical specimen, and most of his career he had a bad back because as a youngster he had to lift and help move around his mentally disabled brother and his dad a lot and he claims in his book that was what did a lot of damage to his back and cause a herniated disc.

the 90s is when NBA players really started incorporating strength training in their workouts. If you look at the players of the 80s most of them were really skinny.

The 90s is when you started to see post-Jordan athletes emerge, when guys especially in the 6'3-6'8 range were really, really getting serious about their fitness and athleticism in order to keep up with Jordan. Jordan is directly responsible for the modern NBA athlete; he's why NBA players are among the fittest overall athletes in all sports.

The game has changed, the rules, the schedules, the players, the way interiors and guards play has changed, so it makes sense trainers wouldn't use a 1991 style of training nowadays. Even Tim grover, who trained jordan and pippens a little later said in his book "jump attack" that science continually evolves and that if he trained these guys with the knowledge we have today, they would have been even better.

Lifting for basketball strength is much more my interest than "bodybuilding", which I think feeds a little into harmful perceptions of what a man should look like. I dont care about having "big" muscles, but rather strength and to be fit is more important imo. I like the level of lifting I see here with the legendary Bulls.

Guys today have 30% less testosterone than guys 30% years ago and thats a fact you can see just by looking at the dream team of 92 and players today of same age, guys of dream team look like their fathers even though they are of same age. Don't get upset I disagree with universal weight training, certain athletes that have a certain game style do benefit, I didn't. Especially when your game is derived from speed and finnese endurance. The more Michael incorporated weights into his regiment he gained some strength and 'seasonal durability' at the cost of speed and body weight ratio explosive action (eg leaping ability)

Deion Sanders, Jerry Rice, and many of the best athletes lifted weights and were top speed players. Jordan slowed down to conserve energy and be more efficient on the court. It wasn’t until after Grover that he started winning championships...so...anyway, his natural speed didn’t decline until he came back from retirement the first time, and that was due to age, but also maturity. Going 100 miles per hour all game will ensure you get plaguing injuries that will truly reduce career potential...
@stefanianev5138

There is definitely some truth to that. But MJ needed to get stronger to get through the Pistons and the type of game he played later on in the post holds up better as you age. By early your 30s explosiveness will dwindle off naturally. Strength you can maintain well into your 40s.
