When I took my concealed carry course many years ago, the instructor who was a 20 plus year active law enforcement officer went over self defense laws extensively. He told us no matter how 1000% sure we were that we acted in self defense, ALWAYS ask to have an attorney present for questioning

Judge Manning has the most impressive recall of facts! I've noticed that especially with other TPO situations. She's sharp as a tack!
@shotforshot5983

And she rips through massive arraignment dockets (but with due consideration), then completely changes speed and listens intently to all TPO testimonies. Let's them spill all the beans. She takes DV, the potential for DV or intimidation, and the safety of all parties very seriously! I think we'd all like to go out to dinner, have a drink, play a round of golf etc with her and hers.

Are we talking about the judge saying defendants had to stay with the first lawyer or have none? Don't they all have a right to an attorney unless THEY say they want to go it alone? Meaning if someone was hard-headed enough to say no, I'm not representing myself, and I am not taking the first lawyer you appointed so give me a new one, is the judge allowed to make a defendant go alone? I thought people had a right to an attorney? And I've seen many defendants switch lawyers for various reasons, some to waste time but some genuinely didn't get along with their lawyer. If a trial went ahead and the defendant believed they had no choice but to go alone because they believed the judge, couldn't that case be thrown out due to the defendant not having his rights exercised due to the judge lying to him and saying he had to take the first lawyer or get nothing? I may have it all wrong, I'm not in the states, but I thought everyone was entirely to an attorney even if they fire the first one and ask for another. I get what you're saying though, many defendants use it as a way to stall procedures, my issue is the judge is supposed to protect everyone's rights, including criminals and they are supposed to be at the top morally, can a judge make a defendant stay with the appointed lawyer, and make a defendant defend themselves if they don't want that lawyer for whatever reason? If not, surely morally this judge is not setting a good example.
@richardclaus4751
@richardclaus4751 Жыл бұрын
@@gemmacook1753 you are right, they are allowed an attorney. If they can show they cannot afford a private attorney one will be appointed from the public defenders office. At no charge (other than a small admin feenin some places). Bit, the suspect cannot pick and choose. They are getting a real, certified attorney at taxpayer expense. They cannot swap them out. Some place are more lenient and I saw one case where the suspect went through 3 lawyers before the judge says STOP. Many times it is to create delay in the trial, sometimes the suspect wants to have a wild and often illegal defense and the lawyer explains that it is not allowed so the suspect wants a new lawyer (this is apparently what happens most of the time). Lastly, sometimes amperson thinks they know the law better than the lawyers and the judge so they try to represent themselves. 99.99% fail.

I gotta admire the second guy that the judge flexed on. He caught on to the correct program right away. "I apologize your honor. And I apologize to Mr. Rodruiguez. There's no excuse for the way I acted." Even when you believe the judge is 100% wrong and an asshole and full of shit (and this judge might be one of those things, but not all three of them at the same time), there are four magic words that every attorney needs to memorize: 1) I, 2) Apologize, 3) Your, 4) Honor. Four words. The fourth one is already a great lawyer. He got his sentence reduced from 40 years to 3 years just like that.

Yea, I believe that’s what it is. That or she lost her hearing at a young age, but can still hear a bit (maybe hearing aids or naturally) to where she can still speak but certain consonants and vowels don’t come out “properly” due to the way she hears herself. I commend her, though, for the mere fact that she doesn’t let it hold her back, notably in a profession that has her speaking a lot among a crowd. That is pretty awesome. I don’t have any issues with my speech and I still sound like nails on a chalkboard with anxiety through the roof if having to speak to the public in that manner lol. She seems very comfortable and rather professional. Edit: reading she may be from West Africa, so there may be a slight difference in pronunciation, as well. Also fluent in other languages. Now that is immigration done right.

I was thinking the same thing. She also appears to be looking down and reading (voice to text) as others are speaking. I recall a supposedly real reddit story where a couple of sovcit parents didn't get their daughter an ID or vaccines. They got jailed, they entrusted their small child to a friend, friend somehow managed to sign the kid up for school for several years while passing her as friend's own. The poor naive friend believed the parents would get out of jail soon enough, but apparently there were some problems. Eventually, the school scheduled a trip, a led to b, school director found out the child had no valid id, the government got involved, their revoked the sovcit couple's parental rights, friend adopted the sovcits' daughter and go her ids and vaccines and everything.
