just as I thought I have enough tools. dam, now I go to go and look for power factor tools . thank you very helpful.

Hi Martin, Thank you for this great video series. I asked you some time ago if you could do a video on power analyzers and you really delivered! Far above what anyone could expect, I must say. I studied 4 years to learn this stuff, so if you researched it "for a few days" like you said, you officially have have the gluiest brain on earth :-) These are very complex topics, but you manage to explain them very clearly. I wish there were videos like this when I was studying this stuff. I'm sure it will help a lot of students in the future. The fact that you demonstrated everything with instruments and not only on the white board is really great. Top notch, Martin!!

ZenseiDK Thanks very much for the feedback, it really is appreciated. It was a bit more than a few days of research...at least a week ;-)Cheers, Martin.

Thanks Martin, I appreciate your videos. It's rather fortuitous that when I started thinking about PFC you started making videos on it. I've been learning electronics less than 3 years focusing mostly on device repair. I was aware of PFC circuits and components in SMPS's, but only recently started learning about the specifics.

Awesome. l am from Ukraine. And even here your videos are the best for understanding this important part of electricity. But please, if you can, continue your videos about basic electronics. You have stopped on capasitors and 555 timer. PLEASE make something about transistors, triggers, microdevices. You english is very good, sometimes two fast, but its ok, even for russian speaking man. I even increase my lenguage level because of you. I want to thank you of making me cleverer than before. I very respect you.

To many snake oil sellers :) Great video you did quite a bit of investigation and learning on this. Good that you looked in to the grid tied PV issues most people do not understand why at this point there is a problem with large PV installations without storage. I do not see how inverter power factor can help with this situations the only way is to stop sending power to the grid when there is excess so that they do not need to turn off much slower generators. Just less than two hours before the new Solar BMS is on Kickstarter and once I have a link I will sent it to you. Solar BMS is for Off-grid :)

Hi Martin, can you do the power factor test like this by using wash machine or dryer which consume 3 - 4 Amps at a time ? If there is a difference, which means you are working for......, But if it is like this video which means it's a matter of miliamps and almost no difference, then I believe your testing (experiment).....show us your experiment by a big load which is like I mentioned ....frigrator or dryer or washing machine...house hold stuff ....etc. thank you M.

Very helpful series! Well explained. I own an Induction cooktop and thought it was consuming 300W idle / off, but apparently the "True" consumption is less than 10% of that.

I am watching your video because I have 8 motors at my work place that come on and off and I have power factor issues. Most important is as you said utility penalty for power factor and the second is low voltage especially in summers which is quite a problem for me. I have corrected the three phase motors but my single phase motors are a problem. I want to correct the single phase power factor so that the Transformer is not overloaded and I can get those 10-15 volts improvement

Great presentation! I have done a basic course and I wondered if I could ask what is in the main neutral conductor in a domestic consumer unit? If it is all the current in the house, then surely there must be a voltage to cause that current to flow. I assume that the voltage is actually quite low, but is dependent on the overall length and resistance of the supply cables? IE: if the supply cables are long then the voltage in the neutral at the consumer unit would be higher than one were the cables are short owing to the resistance? Am I thinking correctly? SAM

Do we get the same results if we are dealing with DC power, for example solar panels ??. some people claims to save money and even the battery bank holds the charge longer, when installing capacitors in a solar panel set up. what is opinion about it ??.

The Fluke 43b is a great scope meter for real time troubleshooting. I can’t find anything to replace it. I need the transient capture feature, but i really need the real time sag and swell recording. I have to figure out a lot of flickering light concerns. The last one was a defective power supply on a laptop computer. The one before that was a copier/printer that shared the wire from the main panel to the sub panel and cause the lights fed from the subpanel to flicker. Can the Fluke 345 perform these tests? Otherwise I will have to use a power quality analyzer and download it over and over again for each circuit tested. Very time consuming.
@ccd50686 жыл бұрын
One thing I’ve noticed is that using the inrush current on other clamp meter will only give you the inrush of current. The wont give you the corresponding single cycle voltage sag. Does the 345 have a single cycle inrush with a single cycle sag (at the same time) test?

Martin, Please make it clear that whether CFL Lamp /LED lights will have good effect or not. As I saw that it increases the pf but introduces the harmonics. So whats good ? use it or not? please tell me ur opinion
@volodumurkalunyak46518 жыл бұрын
why THD on15:07 is increased? I know. Capasitor compensate inductive rective power, REDUCING fundamental current. harmonics aren't reduced or increased. Thd is total harmonic current/total fundamental current. that's why THD is increased.

i have a problem,if use inductive loads reactive power generate and that reactive power flow back to the grid,in domestic there is no capacitor bank so large amount of current flow through the MCBs and RCD so why they didn't trip

I never heard of anyone being penalized for power factor unless it's real bad. Most residential, commercial and industrial consumers in North America are charged by kWH only, so power factor is not very relevant.
