Overhead Work SUCKS!! (MJ Sailing - Ep 334)

Temperatures are scorching, and we're inside covered in a paste of sweat and sanding dust. Work goes hard on the cabin top with hopes to get it primed in the next few days.
This week has had record breaking heat, making it impossible to tackle some crucial laminating projects. However, we’re not letting the heat slow us down! We’ve been focusing on sanding and fairing with determination. We're prepping the helm station and cockpit steps for their first coat of high-build primer. Of course, we’re aiming to prime as many areas as possible in one go. The V-berth and the underside of the cabin top around the deck are also in need of high-build primer.
Working in the V-berth is a challenge on its own. After a winter storm forced us to relocate 60% of our stored items into the boat, the V-berth has been a storage area for the past six months. My current mission is to clear it out, clean it up, and make the final touches to get it ready for primer. Meanwhile, Matt is perfecting the steps and helm storage by routing the edges. We weren’t satisfied with the radius of the steps compared to the smaller radius of the storage unit, so we're re-filling and routing the steps to match.
On the outside of the boat, I’m smoothing out the inside and outside edges of the cabin top to ensure all transition points are flawless. Although it’s not the most strenuous task, spending most of the day with my arms above my head and my neck craned up is definitely uncomfortable.
We had hoped to be applying primer by the end of the week, but a rainy day set us back. Minor delays are nothing new to us, so stay tuned for next week’s episode where we transform these areas!

I think you would be amazed how well a small AC unit would work. Just leave the unit outside the boat and plastic seal it up.

So I'm sitting here future tripping. As soon as you said nothing was going to be done about the damage to the tent structure , I was off and running. The people there have been so great to you. Most of these areas are about to get their last coat of finish primer. Depending on heat, we might have surfaces painted by early to mid September!

Get yourself one or two split AC systems. Preferably a recharged one. We do this every time we are in a yard. Just sell them afterwards.. Get the model that dies cool and heat. Much more efficient that using the space heaters. Good units have a COP of 4-5. So you will be getting 4x the heat for the same amount of electricity.

I know what you mean! There's so many areas that just need these little touch ups. And we bounce back and forth, day to day, working on them. But each week there's less spots to cover, and then before we know it, there will be none!😍

Have you considered getting a mini-split AC / Heat pump or just a straight AC unit so you can do all your work in better conditions? This would give you better respite from the heat and humidity and heat in the winter? I’ve seen at least 1 other rebuild project do this. Might be a very sensible investment…

We actually use of of those in the boat we're living on, but it wouldn't do well during the build right now because of all the sanding that is still happening in there. The cool air they circulate is drawn from within the boat, and with all the dust in the air, it would clog almost immediately. It would be nice though. 😀

Are you going to use gelcoat on the external areas or are you switching to paint? If the yard will let you you should do a temporary repair to the tent, constant leaks are going to slow things down👍

We are going to use paint on the external surfaces, instead of gelcoat. We're actually working quite hard right now to get the boat in close up condition, so that we can be exposed to the elements. 🙂

Can't you get it in the water and sai swim and sand a little bit while you are actually sailing around???it does not have to be perfect just good enough. Best wishes for finishing your yacht. Maybe you could sail it to one of the islands where you could hire 20 workers and have it done finished in a day. What do you think?

We'll be out of the tent by then and the boat will be in somewhat of a close up shape, haha. (We don't want to put in windows or hatches until we're ready to launch)

I have a question. At some point in this build you're probably going to install an Air-con system. Well if you either install the windows or have airtight plastic sheets covering the window frames and all the other gaps (like doorways) get airtight plastic sheets, then surely now would be a good time to have the air-con system installed so you could work inside the boat. So my question is why not setup the air-con system so that it's more comfortable for you to work inside the boat?

Marine air conditioning is water cooled and not air cooked like home units, so it requires the boat being in the water. But also, the cool air they circulate is drawn from within the boat, and with all the dust in the air, it would clog almost immediately. Man, It would be nice though :)

@@MJSailing Sorry princess I think the global problem is beyond your reach but by all means have a crack at it if you feel inclined. I was thinking you might employ a water misting fan or an air conditioner, there are lots of options to improve the work environment for better performance and to look after your health. Doing nothing and having an attitude won't improve the situation will it.

@@MUDNROCKS The only solutions we can use right now are the fans inside (which were shown) and the occasional cooling vest. We can't use an AC unit in there at the moment due to all the sanding that is still going on. The cool air they circulate is drawn from within the boat, and with all the dust in the air, it would clog almost immediately. I've even thought about the personal neck fans, but that would clog immediately too. Since there is so must dust in the air and on surfaces, a misting fan would turn everything into a paste. If you have other ideas for us, I'd love to hear it. I'm going to put it out to our viewers in next week's video to see if they have suggestions on ways to keep cool in a construction zone.

@@MJSailing I needed to cool a workshop once, I hired a freezer truck and froze 20L water containers in it at night for the thermal mass, during the day I had polystyrene covers which taped over two of it's doors and a fan with foil flexi ducts to plug into holes in the polystyrene door covers to get the cold air from the truck into the shop. I hired the truck, had the fans, bought some ducting and a shit load of water containers ..... wasn't hard.

Personally we'll have saved about 400k from what the same options would be from the factory. But we're also lucky that this build is part of our career and we make a living from putting out videos about it. Most people wouldn't be able to give up 4-5 years of their jobs to do a full time build.

@@MJSailing HMMMMM, 4 1/2 years , 2 people, 1800 hours/Yr x 2 = 16,200 hours x $50/Hr = $810,000 in labor + $350,000 for Material and O/H = $1.16 Million and a steady dose of chemicals and fibers in your system for 4 or 5 years !! Net loss of $410,000 and your health..........sad

Your hardwork is really paying off. I know it does not feel like it sometimes but, LOOK AT YOUR BOAT!! It looks like a cat. Great job!! Please remember you guys are around a lot of toxic materials and you are obsorbing those in your skin, breathing them in etc So make sure you guys detox your bodies of these toxians. Here are a few excellent chs that describe the process of detoxing heavy metals & toxians from the body. Ch Dr Mindy pelz (vds detox heavy metals, detox liver/kidney, 7 types of fasting etc), Dr Group, Dr Axe, Candida Eric bakker naturopath. I can see by the dark circles under your eyes (you guys are too young for those) that you need to detox your body. Wishing you guys all the best on the rest of your build. So proud of you both. Would it help to keep your materials in a refrigerator-cooler so that your starting from 50’ rather than 80-90’

Some of the items we do, but that's below the boat, and we're using the fairing compound so consistently. One of us is usually in it every 15 minutes.
