MY MENTAL HEALTH COMES FIRST!!.... Construction Tradespeople need Help
Ive walked off this job for the sake of my own mental health
Ive had to walk away from this huge new build for a few reason as i say in the video, but one being that its just too big for me to do with the pressure that's on it from day one. Walls and ceilings being plastered befoire pipework has gone in and been fitted.

Hardly a walk off mate, you've knocked over alot more than most would before it became untenable. Builder knows your manpower limitations as much as you do, there's a reason he'd be cracking on to squeeze every hour he could. Lucky to have had you as long they did, good on ya mate health first and reputation to the bread and butter 👍

As I’ve got older I’ve realised that rushing around thinking x3 jobs ahead of the one your actually on catches up with you eventually, I enjoy the trade more now just taking on what I can cope with and working at my pace not someone else’s, I’m content if my family are looked after bills are paid and I have some beer money in my pocket. We are all along time dead, nothing worth stressing about or losing sleep over👍🏻

I agree that it is not easy to walk away from commitments but there comes a time when your health is more important. I was in a very stressful job 30+ years ago and the end result was major heart surgery. I swore never to do it again because it's just not worth it!! Life is never stress free but keep it to a manageable level. You made the right decision Mark.

We need more like you, when I was working ( I’m now retired) it got me really angry when I was told a date when to start and when you arrived on site it was either not ready or everyone was in your way how hard is it to stall the plasterers for a while so you and the sparks can get your first fix done, pretty poor management in my opinion, I’ve seen me start at 4am and finish up by 10 am so I could be on site on my own without shoving someone aside or two or three trades in the way and damaging everything you had just done, rant over, funny thing is I still miss the site work even though I’m retired

Hi Mark, as an electrician I've had this happen to me when you arrive at a job to find the plaster's have been called in to do the walls before I've run my cables etc, not their fault just poor project management misunderstanding the process flow. Not worth the hassle and stress I completely understand and It's these situations that can lead to mistakes being made. Keep to your own planning, much better in the long run. Love the videos btw.

i'd of left the minute i saw the plasterers. one of the saving graces of site work, i get in before the sparky and the boarders... the firm i work for have banned us from running 15mm plastic down to appliances, due to bond locking the fittings open causing blow offs, so there all copper drops again, which makes 2nd fixing a doddle

Hi Mark, another good video highlighting the side of the job people don't see. If management treated someone like that in a normal 9 to 5 job they would get hauled over the coals for it yet builders are always pulling this sort of stunt. I walked away from 1st fix after a builder didn't pay me for the ufh and screed, lost a fortune, ended up selling my vans and getting rid of lads but now just service, boiler swaps and small plumbing jobs, everything else gets passed on. Only in my 30s but decided my health was more important than stressing out for builders, you did right thing

I burried my head in the sand, ignored my phone then had a bit of a panic attack. I'm a cabinetmaker for 40 years. You've been around jobsites long enough to know when it's not right. It's pretty simple really. They have not been willing to work through all the details with you. I stopped working as a flooring contractor for house builders many years ago. Every job was like this one. Totally disorganised schedules. We were fitting floors in houses that had no electricity yet or even windows!

I've only walked off one job too Mark, customer gave me 2 weeks to 1st fix a house then on day one she was on my back chasing me to finish, evaluated the situation then started packing up the next day, she asked if I was just tidying up, put all my gear in the van before I answered, "no I'm off the job!", took the hit of losing a days wages and a bit if stock, wasn't pleasurable, but for my own sanity, I had to do it. Well done to you for doing the same, most builders I know work like yours, think they can click their fingers and we all go running!

Refurbs are never programmed as efficiently as new builds. A plumber will carcass out pretty much any straight forward house up to a five bed in under a week. It’s easy to calculate pipe runs from drawings, plot specific kits delivered ready. This kind of mindless muddling through everyone on top of each other, ordering materials on a daily basis as you run into your next problem that knows thought about is enough to drive anyone bonkers!!!

Been there myself many times. Having anyone other than the electricians and plumbers at the first fix stage is not necessary. You did well to last a week. I have stepped away from jobs for less. Some builders have no organization skills. Only care about speed and profit. Not worth working with. Great video.

Although hard to do. Walking is the only option. I have had carpenters standing at the door trying to get the chip board floor into the room!!!!!!!! I never walked away from a job as a sparky that I trained to be. Did 4 years and in the end, walked away from the profession. Some regrets some not but I have to say any trades reading this, its always better to walk away from a job than it is to walk away from a profession. As a painter decorator for 36 yrs i think I've seen it all tbh from painting skirting while the carpet fitters are laying right behind me to every trade being in one room working or trying to but just getting in eachothers way, they seem to think getting all trades in at once it's getting done quicker but it's the worst thing to do, there's an order of trades going into a job & my trade follows plasterers & chippys but is more or less last bar the carpet fitters or that's how it should be, by the sound of it mate you had a lucky escape 👍

@@MJTiffPlumbing just cherry pick mate if you are in the position to, good plumbers , tradesmen will always be in work as believe it or not there very hard to find, all people want is someone that does a good job, is trustworthy & don't take the piss with a price etc, since i did away with site work as health & safety & influx of foreigners was killing it , no steps allowed, really ? i went self employed that was 9 yrs ago & I've been in constant work since, from distributing 500 cards locally over 2 days 1 person got back to me 2 weeks later where i met a builder doing a loft conversion & started painting the new loft conversions he did & just recommendations , & i only took that rd to post the cards because it was a trip down memory lane as we used it as kids when going fishing, unbelievable

Hi mate, I think we've all been there where other trades are pushing like mad to get done, mainly because I find they haven't got any other work on. You have done the right thing and walked away, that job is always destined to fail when you can't get the first fix done properly. On another note how has building control signed of the pre plaster without the wastes and soils being in. That job should never have been allowed to be plastered by the building control

@@MJTiffPlumbing Sometimes in life your better off to walk away with your reputation intact than risk things going wrong later on down the line because you were put under pressure and pipes weren't tested. Has that job even seen a building inspector? There is no cold spot insulation on the outside walls where the screed meets. There should be 25mm of kingspan or equivalent on all outside walls to stop a cold spot forming

I understand everything you said about this job. I am in the TV / communication's business for the past 38 years and am self employed also. A very small portion of my work is on large commercial jobs, thank god, as the H&S make it impossible to get a days work done. I arrived on site one day and by midday I had 5 minutes work completed as I had to get certs to use one type of step ladder, a different cert to work in a riser and a different cert to wipe my backside. Plasterers in general, especially on commercial sites don't give a dam about the other trades that follow them. They just want to get muck on the walls and in most cases they don't even price the job. Their rates are set by the quantity surveyors etc, so get as many sq mtrs up as possible in a day. I have had coaxial cable ends lost in a lump of plaster and cables cut by plastering trowel's. I should have listened to my late father when he advised me to ''get a job in the civil service'' . Being self employed is a thankless job.

Been in this blokes situation not as a plumber but on the brush and believe me losing sleep over a job because time is an issue is horrendous. That mental battle of jackin it in but knowing you've took the job on plays havoc with your head, but the relief when you come away...there's nothin like it haha. I'll never make the same mistake so I'm glad it happened to me as a valuable lesson

I once worked on a shopfitting job for a Tesco build. We were installing a customer service desk, right next to a bricklayer gang building a wall, flooring team laying the thick tiles in a specific path to allow ceiling installers on a scissor lifts to hang the ceiling. Absolute mayhem.

From the first day I could hear the stress in your voice on this job. It’s bad enough that the builder was supplying fittings, they never get what you want when you want it but scheduling plasterers when the first fix isn’t even done is a big no no! He might be a nice guy and pay on time but nobody worth their salt can work like that. You did exactly the right thing in walking away. There’s been a few jobs where I wished I’d done exactly that and had sleepless nights because I hadn’t. Keep up the great work Mark. 👍🏼👍🏼

I am not in any trade but about 30 years back I got a builder to build house on a plot. At the start he said I will complete house in 8 weeks ONCE planning passed and foundations are laid. He had his own team and it opened my eyes on how he managed the build with dates timings etc. Near the end house was complete except for about 7 rows of brick top of gable end, weather had turned nasty and the brickie refused to finish until weather improved his reason was the `cement mix` would likely be a different colour due to rain washing it, brickie would also not allow another brickie to help as it would cause inconsistency in the cement thickness between layers. That said house completed in just under 9 weeks. I was more than happy with the result. But I guess times have changed.

I was exactly the same this weekend I do mainly gas work servicing, landlord certs,repairs and replacing taps, toilets, basins and baths took on a bathroom and kitchen tor landlord in his own house full rip last weekend but all week wondering how I'm going to fit it in with my full time job and only available one day a week. This weekend had to explain to him I would be struggling to get if done in a timely manner and he be better getting some one else I was having sleepless nights last week eveuthing was going through my head at night then after letting him know Saturday had my breakfast went back to my bed and slept till 18.00. I know I won't be doing that again putting myself through all that stress. Good on ya Mark and a good video. Have a good week.

I have had similar situations in the past, all down to site management. you have done the right thing, not worth beating yourself up over it. At least your not walking away from materials on site. Sometimes, with my own experience, when i was self employed, i was doing a build for a client. I had previously done alot of work for the family. This particular client, money was not an issueand there were constant changes being made were i was having to alter the first fix pipework, after 9 days it was a bitter pill 2 swallow and arranged a meeting with the client on site and decided 2 walk off the job in good terms. But the point is, there are plumber who can work in chaos and work in a disorganised way - fine, it works for some. Not me, I like to work in an organised manner, if it takes me a day longer i dont mind, knowing there will no comebacks. But to feel constant pressure of a job because you r trying to accomodate other tradesmen is not worth the headache and stress. Now, if I dont want to do a job, because it will cause unnecessary strain I am happy to walk away (they will always be another plumber) Good decision Mark, at times you will feel if u made the right choice to walk away, this is natural, because u know your craft and at times its the assumption of anticipating or wondering of what others may have thought of u 2 walk away from a job, i felt like this fromy own experience but down the line, u know it was the right decision... Moral of my experience is,.u cant let builders or clients control you, they need your service otherwise they could do it themselves. Work at your pace knowing your enjoying the job at hand and giving that client your best work.

I am in the SAME quandary now as you are. I agreed to this job 2 months ago and got told to start 2 weeks later than they should of and being pushed every minute. 35 yrs doing this and I’m ready to tell him I’m all set now find another guy. It wenT from an entire basement for all equipment to a 7x11 room, oil tank, furnace, water heater, water pump and sewage pump. Best from Northeast US.

This reminds me of some barns I was involved in 10 years ago . We Got there to fit underfloor heating loops to find the floor insulation hadn’t even been fitted . So me and my mate spent half a day installing celotex , just so we could get loops done . We also had to shoehorn a oil boiler , unvented cylinder , and provide for a washing machine into a space of two square meters in the centre of the building . We said to the builder ,,, where’s the flue and condensate pipes going to go if the boiler Cupboard is in the centre of of the barn . The barn was also listed , so that made it difficult for the planners to accept the flue going through the roof ! There were a few days we walked off site and billed the developer for our wasted time , and charged him for jobs that other trades should have done and materials we used off the van or had to buy ourselves . Never again !!

I’m not a plumber but I am self employed I’m inanother trade and you were absolutely spot on to walk away and look after your regular customers so many trades just Rely on one off jobs nothing wrong with that but iv always ran my business with the utmost regard for my regular customers that look after me when times are harder good on you 👍

Should’ve stuck with what you thought. This is more of an industrial job rather than the private ones you usually do so you’ll have to deal with a load of other trades and their materials. To avoid the stress and your own reputation getting hammered you could make clear to the builder that you only had a certain amount of time free “look mate I can give you a week / 2 weeks max and I’ll do what I can in that time but spend some time looking for someone to finish it off “ That way you will all know where you all stand and no stress and no hard feelings either side.

Respect your honesty, I have known loads of single handed tradesmen burn out from taking on badly planned jobs. As always it's the shit in life that you cannot control that causes you the stress not necessarily the working your balls off bit!

Alarm bells ring for me when the builder is supplying all materials. Like you say, we know what we need when we go to the merchants. When a builder supplies we have the added stress of making sure they have the right list etc... If I know I haven't got something in particular I find it difficult to carry on working until I have that thing... Anyone else?

Fair play for being honest about the job and how it effects you. How many times do we hear this in the industry? All too often. Working for builders/on site is an absolute nightmare and often the lowest paid end of our trade! Always a pain when customer/builder wants to supply materials to save a few quid too! 👍👍

Great decision ! Don't work for a builder who doesn't know the sequence of building,you have to ask yourself why were the plasters on the job before you? Is the builder desperate for a stage payment after plastering done? Jobs that would normally take 10mins taking hours because you've got to take boards down,and move insulation out if the way ,and you can't work out your pipe runs.It all just makes the job harder than it should do,what other trades would put up with that? It's the builder's loss he's lost a good Plumber, he won't find another quite so easy!

Packed plumbing in when i was 19 too much pressure from start to finish starting from when you turned off the water/gas id have to say though that in the 3 years i was plumbing, i learnt how to lay bricks, patch plaster,joinery ,glaze,tile and became a demon at leadwork,that all on top of plumbing and central heating ,im retired now at 50 there was no chance of that if id stayed plumbing ,but must say it stood me in good stead as everything after that seemed like a walk in the park

A prime example of why planning and good comunication are important, especially on larger jobs. A few hours spent crating a plan that all trades can follow saves costlly time waisted undoing and redoing work already completed.

Hi Mark -- just watching your video of the job you could not coplete -- really know what problems you've come across ! -- 8 plasterers banging ceilings in all over the house + your expected on your own to get pipes in !! -- no good , like you've said you need the house to yourself so you can get your pipes in before the plasterers even come to site ! -- ive been plumbing + heating since the 70s + i now have worked for myself for 10 years + your bang on right , look after your regular customers , not some builder who just want to make a packet from his new builds -- i'm just glad he p[ayed coz that would have been an insult if you'ed have had trouble getting your money -- like you Mark ive done many big jobs in the past , but now its just boiler services + breakdowns , landlord certifictes + small jobs ! im like you a sole trader with approx 350 regulay customers -- and they come before any big time builder ! -- take care Mark --- JIM

Mark think most people in this game have come across situations like this at some time in there life but you know in yourself if things are not quite right the fact you gave a time scale to 1st fix and the builder as not listened I think you’ve made the right decision to walk, at the end of the day if you would have rushed in all the pipe work because you were under pressure by other trades and found later there were leaks everywhere due not having the time to test them it’s your reputation that you’ve built up over time that gets tarnished, l would not stress over this and carry on making other great videos

This is what I've said all along ( I'm 64 so coming g to the end of my plumbing career) there is a complete lack of respect between trades. Its ok for plasterers to crash on as they don't have the headaches of a plumbing system that needs installing and testing. Those guys will probably have been paid by the Square Mt and gone off and got a good night's sleep! Builder is to blame as well though and did you put it to him not to allow any boarding without at least ringing you for a visit. Infuriating!

You were talking about leadwork on an interview and how plumbers became synonymous with it. Probably down to the Romans forming lead pipes to supply their aqueducts and baths etc. I can still turn my hand to knocking up a gutter back, it's a skill you just don't lose once attained! I prefer to dress rather than leadburn but sometimes it's not possible.

My old man is going to love your channel. He's 45 years a plumber and currently stuck at home recovering from a knee op (the old dear has never seen so much of him lol). The number of times he's told this story to me lol! One builder once got the window fitters in at the same time as we were stripping all the old pipework out. Middle of January, no windows in the house, freezing our tits off and covered in old, dirty water while surrounded by brand new double glazing and window panes. Slow claps...

Sorry for you on what happened. I would do the same and definitely agreed with all your action. I always prefer things to be planned and go according to the plan which is not always happen but the builder shouldn’t let the plastering going without the fist fix. Couldn’t understand why a builder will think this will work at the end

Plasterers are a nightmare these days. Turn up too early, too many and every other trade is expected to fall in line and work in an inefficient manner in order to accommodate them. Often it is worse in the spring as they push ahead to take the summer off to go home to Romania for several weeks
