Chief Charles, her granddaughter and the other commentator are correct that we Sukumas are peace-loving people. That explains why people from other tribes and countries find Sukumas are different for they are easy-going people. They are hard working and love dancing over the weekends or during dry seasons. Their peace loving can also be attributed to their land which is almost flat or with hills here and there - not scary mountains like Kilimanjaro or those found in Morogoro. Rain is not as violent like Bukoba. I briefly lived in Kigoma and found people there were too reserved - not talking to strangers like me a typical Sukuma. I now live in Wisconsin USA. Other than isolated incidents, people here behave like Sukumas - hard working and enjoy weekends or off days. So an individual from Wisconsin will find it easy to live among Sukumas for they are get-along people. Of course we Sukumas think everybody in the world speaks Sukuma. My grannie was always disappointed every time I introduced people from other tribes and Americans and told her that they could not understand what she was saying.

You're right. I am 100% Sukuma born and raised at Jojiro and therefore I know Sukuma culture and how they operate. I also participated in research about Sukuma culture. I therefore know where my roots come from. In any case, Sukuma love being soil tillers or farmers and cattle ranchers. My maternal grandfather had more than 60 cows and large farm. I don't want to tell you where they got the farm. But I know my father had to pay dowry to have my mother as his wife. I was born during British era when I had to attend boarding school from 5th grade to 8th grade. From there I went to Mwanza secondary school where we had to speak English all the time. But the few years with my parents, I knew how Sukuma culture operates. The two presenters here were right as how Sukumas have operated all this time. What surprised me lately, is that despite political and economic imposed changes, somehow Sukumas have remained Sukumas. Sukumas are not socialists or capitalists - but excel as mixed economic people. If you are in trouble, they will help or love to help you until you get on your feet. In USA we say political changes have not removed “the Sukuma from Sukumas. That means they remained Sukumas. I have been further surprised even Sukuma kids still speak Sukuma without foreign accent. Amazing!

Both of you are correct about my Sukuma tribe. What surprises me is Sukumas are hard working and peace loving people. Sukumas tend to be adventurers - that is if family farm is too small to sustain extra family members; Sukumas would move to another location. I was surprised to see Sukumas in Geita, Rukwa areas. More surprise is when I heard Sukumas in Nzega Zanzibar speak Sukuma with regular accent like my accent at Jojiro. I had a cousin born and raised in Zanzibar - he was a doctor. I was surprised to hear him speak Sukuma with regular accent despite being raised among Swahili people in Zanzibar. I believe we Sukumas have something which glues us as Sukumas. I have kids here in USA. Don't tell them they are not Sukumas for they will not like that. They want to be regarded as Sukuma Americans just like we call Sukuma Mnyantuzu, Sukuma of Geita, Sukuma of Kahama, Sukuma of Nzega, Sukuma of Mwanza. Don’t be surprised that they have different Sukuma accents; just like English speaking people.

@@asifiwedeus4122 You are right. We Sukumas don't want to learn foreign cultures. We think we can do without foreign cultures. We expect visitors or strangers to learn Sukuma and live like Sukumas. Sukumas did not want to go to school. I am pure Sukuma from Jojiro. During school recess which lasted 1 month, I would visit my mother’s parents. There I was exposed how Sukumas lived. Given that I was too much into school Western academics, I found it hard to live with my mother’s parents. My grandmother i.e., mother of my mother, would always wonder how I could make it in life without tilling the soil. As the Sukuma young lady and the Sukuma gentleman said: "We Sukumas are peace loving people, will help you until you’re on your own; so longer you agree with Sukuma tradition. Further Sukuma will welcome anybody from any tribe so long as loves peace. I remember way back in the 60s the mayor of City of Mwanza was not Sukuma; but was Haya who had learned Sukuma language. So, the Sukumas had accepted him as one of their own despites being from Bukoba or was Haya. You will also learn that Sukumas love music and dancing. But they dance during dry season. As the gentleman said: It’s during dry season that a young Sukuma male would try to establish a new home. I personally observed that with my uncles on my mother’s side. That may explain why Sukumas have taken over areas outside pure Sukuma land. I was surprised to meet a Sukuma in Rukwa , Kigoma, Geita etc. And they seemed to be happy in those area. I hope you remember that Sukumas were also in Zanzibar in the 50s and 60s. Believe their kids spoke Sukuma without foreign or Swahili accent. Thanks for the discussion.
