Do the screens cover the very bottom of the heater, where it sits on the pad?

You are covering the vent louvres which restricts air flow for combustion. Just like an indoor heater needing the proper combustion air venting, so does an outdoor heater. Have you checked for any sooting in the heaters you have installed these on?

Hi...Did you have to drill holes to accomodate the screws? Doesn't appear to be any pre-drilled holes in the shell.

MK Rat Proofing screens are field-tested on the pool/spa heaters we sell kits for. Most of the heaters are forced air heaters. We haven't had any problems with air flow or sooting. The screens actually keep the inside of the heater cleaner.
