It’s a combination of past their prime players that can’t accept the L’s with age and a bunch of story mode fans with too high expectations. The original mk 1 had no stories - it was just a fighting game and if you did the tourney you got a quick blurb at the end about whatever character you took thru the tower. This game and X are both great fighting games

I think both sides can offer someone more insight on how things are really going in a video game. But I tend to agree with you the most. I love mk so ima play the game and enjoy my time with it. You are not dumb for listening to multiple sides of a topic before forming an opinion on it. If anything, you're smarter than most because you do that rather than go straight for confirmation bias. Brady does indeed offer good constructive criticism on MK1, but up to a certain point. As of late, he's been far too negative on MK, which has earned him that title. As for Mike Hollow, he has no connection to the MK Kommunity, has no tourney placements in MK ever and seems to not even like MK (especially MK1) to begin with, so listening to anyone that isn't invested in MK's success is a fool's errand. It always makes me laugh to see people that don't play MK games try to make content around our games suggesting the most ridiculous things to make MK more like their game that relatively nobody plays by comparison. No, MK needs to keep on being MK, just more optimized.

You are quite welcome!!! I have always done my best to tell the truth about this game not just the way that I see it, but also substantiated with historical context, facts, figures and data. MK1 got a lot of unearned vitriol directed towards it and I was one of the lone voices on here that consistently found the good in the game, even when my main character was brought into the game in a nerfed state.

7:30 I have to disagree here. Every fighting game should stay true to themselves. Take notes from other games, sure, but they shouldn't try to copy another franchise. Hell, the World Tour mode took notes from all versions of Konquest mode in 3D era, and it paid off for them immensely. Otherwise, I agree with everything else you said. I always thought about this idea for secret character fights in MK. I'm always gonna be down for brand new secret characters, but that obviously can't always happen. However, alternate versions of existing characters are definitely possible: Zombie Liu Kang, Cyber Sub-Zero, Hanzo Scorpion, Dark Raiden, etc. Edit: I'd love to see some MK9 footage. If you have any Arcade or 3D era footage, I'd like to see that.

I agreed with that sentiment, but I also noted that FGs do borrow things from other games and that MK can borrow some things here and there from other games. MK9's meter system came from somewhere else, along with the concept an X-Ray/Fatal Blow. But other games have borrowed things from MK also. Nonetheless, you do make a valid point of each game needing to stay true to its own identity, MK especially.

You wamt to know my favorite thing about MK1? If I played SF, I'd be at a massive disadvantage. If I played Tekken I'd be at a massive disadvantage. I am not at a large disadvantage with MK1, because NRS did their absolute best at making sure completely blind players like me can fully enjoy their game. They made a hole system that allows us to play at the level of everyone else. Even if MK1 does truly "die," I will always love the game for that reason.

That's a very good point! Of course, this is at the expense of long-time players, but there's still enough there for MK vets to still have an advantage, even if it doesn't allow them to blow newcomers out of the water.

What they've done is, one, a speech to text that reads out just about all of the menus in the game, second, during the match there is a distance meter which is a clicking that gets faster or further depending on how close I am to the apponent, third, there is another pitch that comes out on hit that is either higher or lower depending on if I am hit with an overhead, high, mid, or low, and lastly, there is sound that gets louder or quieter which tells us if we are approaching a corner. It isn't anything that gives us an edge, there are still a few bugs and flaws in the system, but it is something that no other fighting game has done before. They are still improving it with most patches. It was something I wasn't expecting NRS to do when I heard MK1 was coming out, and I prey that they never stop adding this feature.

Good analysis. Keep up the great content. You can like another game more than mk1 but that does not mean you have to hate mk1. Mk1 certainly looks more balanced and they did solve a lot of the problems that previous games had but that doesn’t mean its perfect. For me the most enjoyable mk game is mkx. Is just the most fun to play. Thats how a lot of people feel. Thats great. Mk1 gives you another feel. Its slower paced more balanced and better suited for competitive play. So you can play both games and enjoy them both without being dramatic all the time.

Personally I’ve played all mk games (except special forces), all tekken games except tekken 4 and almost all street fighter games. Among all them Mortal Kombat is the only franchise that gave me concrete and actual lore about all characters and bothered to create a compelling story. Tekken lost itself after chapter 6 and went back on track in the last game. Street fighter 6 didn’t even bother. I main Jamie and the only thing I know about him is that he wants to protect his city, I guess. A good lore makes you want to come back for the next game and to me mortal Kombat did it perfectly. And the variation system before and the kameo system now gives it more variety and will to experiment new gameplans

This is one of the things that people fail to understand the absolute most. Pitting two characters/fighters against one another is one thing, but it's another thing entirely when there is a compelling story between the two that elevates the stakes of the fight between them. That's been the difference between AEW and WWE as of late; AEW has been putting people to together to have great matches, while WWE has been putting together great stories that culminate in great and memorable matches.

Even still, it's a legendary game that I spent lots of hours playing. I even still know my damn cheat codes, GTTBHR and TDFCLT. If WB wants some more money from the MK franchise, they'd direct NRS to remake that game and MK Shaolin Monks. Couple that with a re-release of MK9 with GGPO and the removal of bugs and fixes to bottom-tier characters and that's bank right there.

Something I noticed is a lot of people that hate mk1 still play mk1. Including me 🤣 A lot are just doing it to get on the hate brigade. Cause they’re bigoted. But I think others like me just have this love/hate relationship with the mortal kombat series because of the last few games NRS and WB has given us. With mk11 being a pretty terrible game start to finish and then mk1 having a terrible launch and its rumors of Khaos Reigns being its last update people have disdain for the series. Some seem to want mk1 to die because then maybe WB will listen to fans more when it comes updating the game. They want people to boycott WB so we get higher quality games. It feels like with every update mk1 is 1 step forward the half a step back. Even when it’s just a balancing patch someone gets a big buff like new moves added and then they go and completely ruin a move. It’s just this pattern they’ve been stuck in for the last few years that I think the community is tired of. It feels like every update I’m like “this is so awesome I can’t wait to play” and then I find out something about it that kinda almost ruin it for me. Like with the Floyd update, I was so excited and then I find out about all the grinding it takes to just get to him. This game is already incredibly grindy with the 10 seasons of Invasions so it was a complete turn off after that.

@@gw7911 Fully heard and understood. I can see why people were frustrated with MK11 and then transitioning into the bad launch of MK1. NRS made quite a few blunders that seemingly have caught up to them. But people have to recognize WB's role in this. They are the ones with the purse strings, the ones who set DLC prices and determine how far NRS can keep developing. They are the reason we got a preemie game in 2023, not NRS. Also, those that were unhappy need to learn how to use their collective voice more effectively. Had they decided to return MK1 in record rates and make a very public statement to WB about their dubious practices, that could have had a transformative effect on the gaming scene. Instead, they decided to hate on the game while still playing it, which sends a mixed message.

Yeah those same people seem to have no self control when it comes to boycotting the game. I see them criticizing the game but at the same time buying the dragon crystals for new skins. They buying the new dlc. Not even waiting for it to go on sale. And then they start complaining but they’re rewarding them for making mistakes. ❓ Those people are completely unserious. The only thing WB listens to is money and data. Ah, I suppose that it is, but it's a non-traditional FG that has its own category. It's certainly not a member of the Big 3 (MK, SF and Tekken). It can't be called a proper 3D fighter because its characters are airborne rather than grounded and it has teleports and fast normals.

I don't know if it's the right track or not but I don't like a ton of what they have done. From small nitpicks like every ninja having exposed hair ruining every default costume. Seriously find a picture of any default sub/scorpion/ smoke skin with a hood/cowl it's just better. Too major issues like ignoring Baraka in every patch the guy needs a complete rework, or them leaving iceball as a 39 frame useless lump but giving Floyd, shujinko and cyrax better version of the move sub is known for. Or them directly admitting to patching characters based on if the combos look cool over functionality.

Those are mostly aesthetic/artistic nitpicks lumped in with normal gameplay/balance snafus that would be present in any Mortal Kombat or other FG. And though I am in agreement with you on these things, none of those issues prevent me from enjoying the game for what it is. We still have time to get NRS to fix Sub's Ice Ball which is the very last fix that he needs. Otherwise, he's in a good space.

I don't really have a team I like with any character I play, and if I want to be even somewhat competitive my kameo opinion goes down drastically unless I'm playing a top 5 character who can pretty much use any kameo and do well.
