It's not exactly explained what his father did, but Johnny drops some hints in MK11 that he probably was very aggressive stage dad. Not actually unusual: Macaulay Culkin and Angelina Jolie have famously bad relationship with their respective fathers: Kit Culkin was very hard on pushing his son to fame, to live his dreams trough him. Pressure he put his son under eventually led him to crack and start using drugs. He's clean now, but as far as I know, he hasn't talked to his father since that(he's still alive, 78y old). Jon Voight was all around asshole, whom Angelina never forgave of setting her family ablaze with his cheating: at best they were in speaking terms for a while, but they never really could mend their relationship. As Jon has gotten more extreme in his views, Angelina has ghosted him completly. Since Johnny is caricature of Hollywood, he probably has experienced the darker side of showbusiness, too.

If you look at the characters, George Liquor and Anthony’s dad from the show, who were both based on his father, you can tell John really hated him and his ways. (of course that didn’t stop him from eventually becoming just like his old man as an adult, turning him into the monster we know now) From a lot of research, parent issues in full grown adults are surprisingly way more common than I thought.
