MK18 Killer? Geissele’s URGI: My SBR Build.

I have my 10.3 geissele set up as a pistol. Running a hbpdw brace, and a ssa in a geissele lower I got and built out. Also running a closed tine warcomp and a warden. I freaking love that rig. Hands down the most practical set up I have for my part of the country/lifestyle. Doing chores around the property? Grab the 10.3 geissele. Going for walk on the mountain? Grab the geissele 10.3. Hear a bump in the night? Grab the geissele 10.3

Yeah ! That’s awesome it looks good and runs well too. A lot of negative reviews about G lately but I have had no issues and seems the little known problems there was have been resolved years ago. Thank you for sharing stay safe in the Appalachia.

@@DesertTigerSyndicate right on man. They had some issues with mk14 rails being bendy because I mean, look at it! So much material removed for weight savings of course it lost rigidity. They also had some barrels that got double chrome lined in the beginning of them hammer forging their own but that was quickly resolved. I don't get the hate, well I do, but it's one of those things where it's popular to hate it so people just do. I will gladly give my money to Mr.Bill with zero hesitation.

Yes I’ve done alot of research online seems you hit the nail on the head. Seems to be a lot of haters and mk18 riders. I do love the mk18 but sometimes other options are nice.

Def not a Mk18 killer, but its nice to have something else to pick from for that type of build. Careful with that rail, it has known issues for bending in the past. Hopefully its all fixed now.

Nah it’s definitely a killer, Geissele beat out DD even in barrel strength. The mk16 rail is definitely better than the ris ll, hence why the sop block 2 was replaced by the urgi.

@@walthermodel01 Idk, in order for something to "kill" its predecessor, there's gotta be enough of a leap in technology to bury it. The same gun but a couple ounces lighter isn't gonna stop dudes from buying the mk18 cause they think it looks cooler nor is it in any practical sense going to change the outcome of a firefight.

FYI, they found that the warcomp actually reduces the flash suppression of the RC2. Open tines are the way to go.

Cool setup! It sure is better than the old MK18. I would say it is about equal for the most part to RIII. I prefer the RIII MK18(at least the upper). The RIII seems to be more robust, it manages the heat very well and I like the grip feel better. I see you have a front iron but no rear, maybe a Unity micro mount would be a better choice since it proves a rear sight? It also has an optional emergency front post if you need more room in the front. I like the 2.26 height very much. Plus, you can use their magnifier mount to eliminate a huge snag point and blind spot in your vision, and more ambi as well esp if you need to peek left.😉

Thanks for the feedback I have not yet had the chance to shoot a RIII. I previously owned a unity riser it had some nice features and the back up rear sight was nice. Although I removed it because I wasn’t a fan of the height especially shooting prone, also it was more of a headache with hold overs.

The natural posture, the speed on the move, and the capability to erase a huge blind spot/snag point are pretty big advantages in my book. To be fair, tho, I also agree with the NZDF's new rifle setup; that piggyback red dot on the ACOG is so comfy to use(between Unity and GBRS height). So I'm definitely biased toward a high mount.

Yes all valid and great points for me right now my biggest reason for not continuing to run a higher mount is a don’t own night vision or gas masks. While I was in the military I shot fine with co witness sights under Nods so I personally don’t see I point for them with nods opposed to standard height

The rail is 2 oz lighter than a DD MK18 RIS, and about 10x as bendy

Never had any issues with bending or losing zeros and have ran two mk16 rails. Aside from weight difference it's minimal but worth mentioning.

Geissele named this style rail the MK16 which is coincidentally the military’s designation for the SCAR 16 rifle. Likewise, the SCAR 17 was designated as the MK17. So calling this AR build a MK16 is incorrect.

Mk18 also has a .080 gas port while the URGI has .070. Huge difference when shooting suppressed.

@@DesertTigerSyndicate a properly gassed rifle increases the longevity of recoil system and bolt/bcg. The 10.3 is notorious for beating itself to death more quickly than a carbine length rifle like a 14.5. URGI was created to improve on what the mk18 pitfalls were. Suppressed shooting and longevity were part of those issues. Not that the mk18 sucks, because it doesn’t at all, just not as modern as the urgi. Weight, gassing, longevity and suppression focused shooting were a big focus of the program

Daniel defense actually since 2017 started porting thier 10.3 barrels at .070 so since then mk18s are .070

I think you are mistaken. Mk16 is the name of the geissele rail. But the mk16 is the scar in 5.56 and the mk17 would be the scar in 7.62. My understanding anyways. Geissele also has what they call a mk18 rail, which is a mk16 but it is longer with arca rail bottom

Ordered a 11.5" near clone from G on black friday. For the money, i don't think it's possible to do better. The CHF barrel, the rail, the REBCG, Super42 spring and buffer kit, pinned gas block. For $940?? Get outta here son. This 8 week wait is killing me though.

Personally i love the handrail it’s light and looks great. No negative aspects in my experience. I know I had another rail that had some bends in it from mlok accessories but it was used and I purchased it online so not sure if it was a legit rail.

11.5’s, 10.3’a never got fielded. The warcomp fucks hard. Any 10.3 will have flash, the warcomp does the best for the flash mitigation of the hybrid muzzle devices. The warden is ghey and stupid. It robs all compensation of a brake or comp and then makes it flashier

Warcomps are trash.... There is a reason that they got ditched by most SOF door kickers. Most were swapped for Closed tine flash hiders or 4 prongs from my understanding My favorite do it all muzzle device is the simple Surefire closed tine flash hider. Great flash suppression, great at minimal kick up from prone as it is enclosed on the bottom, and a great suppressor host with no PING from every shot lol
