The armchair experts don't bother me mate. Im sure these old banger Fords were bodged waaaay worse than my methods back in the day when they were only worth £50 for a whole car. The fact is even 'Esther' had a few corners cut during her build and she's still looking mint 12 years after she was painted. There's more than one way to skin a Cat and you cant see the rear panel from the drivers seat anyway! 😃

For the areas you cannot get to the back of, you can drill a small hole put a self tapping screw and pull out the dent. Also the repair that creaks as you press it sound like there is rust behind it and would recommend to remove the patch and see what lurks behind

Marcus Hayes, I can feel your pain as I'am currently doing a mk3 cortina and currently working on the engine bay which is taking forever to do. I had to patch a hole near the battery tray, and what a pain that was as the metal was pitted in that area and kept blowing holes. I have had to remove the top scuttle panel due to the corners being bad, drivers side had a small hole and someone just filled it up, and similar with the passengers side. Luckily the lower scuttle panel and the area that the heater box and firewall were all clean. Just a suggestion, if trying to weld up and are with a hole or a gap to help avoid blowing holes make yourself a welding spoon and put it behind the panel to bridge the gap. I got some copper pipe and flattened it out to make one, it's a great help.

Abracs twist knot wheel brush for the grinder is very good for taking the paint off the body panels. The bevelled conical version is the ideal one to use , not the cup brush version. Toolstation or Screwfix locally sell them. Works a lot better than the wire wheel for the drill The flap disc is a bit too aggressive for going over the whole panel , the panels can get too hot and can warp with the flap disc over the whole panel. You should ideally only use the flap disc on the rust areas and for removing the bodyfiller.

Honestly, Heidi really isn't that bad! The main hole could do with welding, but if you aren't able to then just fill it with fibreglass. These guys are over thinking it. Yeah in an ideal world it would be immaculate, but guys like us are about getting them on the road and having fun with them. What's the point in doing it to such a high standard you're too scared to use it and hide it away in a garage??? Have fun with it mate, do it your way.
@pedenconceptz

Another point. You will find the filler easier to rub if, you sand it just before it fully cures. Basically you wait until it’s just hard enough to sand but not tear. It will clog the first piece of sanding paper you use, so use an old piece first to take the tacky skin off (or cheap paper). But if you buy a roll of mirka hoimant, it’s like £30 for 50 metres, and I cut it in half, so I get 100metres. You can cut long lengths for long long sanding blocks. It’s not the best paper but it’s cheap 80 or 120 grit so you can use as much as you need to cut through it fast.

Problem is that when you have a panel which is peppered with holes like your back panel it's rotted from the inside out so it's essentially tin foil. It wants a back panel on it.

Marcus Hayes, altough there is debate on which way to use filler some say it's ok to go over bare metal whereas others say put primer then filler. I personally think it makes more sense to go the primer then the filler. Not sure if that fibreglass filler allows it but if it was me I would have gone the primer then the fibreglass, sand back and coat again with primer. As for using fibreglass filler to fix holes, don't do it they will end up coming back. I did this on a cortina I owned. Cut out the arch section and put in a new one. Do the job right and it will last a long time, I know that it may take a long time but well worth it.

It might all take a while, but it’ll be well worth it in the long run. I like rust converters myself, and I’ve had good success when I used a produce called Ospho. Where you’ve lots of cheese, would you ever get fabbed panels(from MST for example) so you only have to make one larger repair, rather than multiple little patches? Enjoying the content Marcus. Keep up the good work. Cheers

If you have a welder you may as well use it. Waste of time having it otherwise. Put the whole bottom 1/2 panel on for all the money of it, if your not confident with the welding, overlap it 5mm and put a series of tacks on it, and some plug welds. not ideal but better than bog. and repaint the inside back panel. Overall it will be quicker. And do yourself a favour, if you’re not experienced with bodywork, upol ‘fantastic’ is very easy to rub. Fill the entire panel and block it off with a long block or I use a 2”x1/2” strip of wood maybe 20” long. (Spray glue strips of paper to it) . When it’s nearly there, a skim of dolphin glaze over the entire panel, it’s is mega easy to rub, you’d cut it back with 120. Filling patches on panels just takes longer. Fill it all and the long hard block will find the dents for you.

The tech data sheet will tell you that either fibreglass or filer is fine over steel, you just don’t want to let it get damp or leave it too long to absorb moisture. That’s why some recommended epoxy first, to seal the steel off. but really it just gives you a longer time window to do your work.
@hoggmotorsport
@hoggmotorsport 4 ай бұрын
@@pedenconceptz agreed on the point of not allowing the filler to get damp, as you've said it does absorb moisture.. If applying filler over the top of epoxy it does need to be well keyed for the mechanical bond... But ideally it should be straight onto bare metal.. The problem with the filler absorbing damp is once it's painted the damp is trapped, then causing micro blisters in the paint as it tries to escape, or then starts corrosion between the metal panel and filler.. Possibly what the original post refers to 🤔 I cringe when watching other channels wet flat filler with a quick wipe down, primed and painted! 😮🙈👍
