This might sound abit mad, but I think it might the immobiliser from the cobra alarm. Drop the fuse box, look for the splice for the fuel pump wires (A2 resource), disconnect the alarm wires, and re-join the original fuel pump wires. A friend of mine had the same problem with his MK3 VR. Remember that’s a very old alarm from the 90s, the circuit inside the alarm brain may not be that great.

I think you threw your ignition timing a bit off when you messed with it hence the backfiring and power loss. Ask someone near you for vagcom and check if there are any fault codes. Also check your fuel pump. I had a faulty fuel pump too on my G60 where it randomly died or started misfiring. Greetings and keep up the mk3 content✌️

Hey Christian, with all the focus on the throttle body area, did you check the coolant temp sensor....when faulty they can be intermittent, cause rough idling, starting issues and stalling. If it's that, it'll be a very quick, cheap job. I've had similar with mk3 and 4 Golfs as well as my 1.8 ABS Passat Wagon. Cheers

If your swapping your distributor out screwing with the timing. Even if it's at TDC it will be close but it won't be perfect. I'm think your losing fuel pressure. I would also check the wiring in the the single port injection. Like pull the insulation and make sure there not cracked.

Distributor timing is off , you need to align the crankshaft and camshaft, to top dead centre, then on the intermediate shaft that turns the distributor you need to loosen the cambelt tensioner and set the rotor on the distributor to point to cylinder number 1 , then with the crank , cam on tdc, put the cambelt back on whilst holding the intermediate shaft with distributor rotor on cylinder number 1. Once all that is set start the car then loosen the distributor and and rotate it to find the sweet spot, but since it just switches off it could be a bad hall sensor, when the vw distributor hall sensor is bad when it reaches a certain temperature is cuts out ,but hearing the backfire must be igniting too late, with a retarded ignition timing.

I'll also say fuel pump (not enough fuel pressure🤔)/reley/, maybe even the bad ecu (not rare thing it gone bad) when it shut off and you tried to start it, you can hear when cranking there is no fuel to start. And also check temperature sensor, just unplug it and run it like that, see will it shut off with unplugged, or maybe now change idle. 19:27 It is something simple I'm sure 99%, these engines were made by the devil him self. They are not easy to fix for DIY mechanic. :/

What engine management system does it have? Looks like there were a few possibilities for that engine code. If it is a Digifant II (seems like that was more common?) check out the "Digifant Reliability" section on this link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digifant_engine_management_system This is also of interest: "Once the new sensor has been installed, start the engine and disconnect the blue coolant temperature sensor. Rev the engine through 3,000 rpm three times, each time allowing the throttle to close completely. This clears the Digifant ECM fault memory." You might be fighting a fault code that is putting the engine into limp mode. I'm guessing this is an OBD1 car?

Idea. Maybe you are building crank pressure. I am not sure what this engine has for releaving crank pressure or how it reroutes the oil vapours but it might be blocked and causing the engine to stall. Easy to test, take the oil filling cap off, see if it runs good. Carefull not to make a mess by reving it too hard if there isn't a buffle behind the cap.

Pls pls pls check out the ECU for Fault Codes. Also it could be very likely too if the relay is getting warm, that it just dies. Mine is not getting warm at all. And again if you change the throttle body, or change the throttle sensor, you will very likely have to re-adapt the ECU to the throttle sensor. And since you switched your distributor assembly, you will have to align that one too. It might be turned to much...just a little tiny bit and bam...you got no power and the car dies sooner or later as it is running to lean or to fat. Also the thermo switch in the radiator is sometimes an issue too, if the car is reaching operation temperature. I would definetly LOVE to come over fix it...thing is...i'm living aprox. 470 km / 292 miles away from ya :[ Keep up, you can fix this. And as far as i can i will help you fix this. The content is not boring, i'm suffering with ya. I know the same stuff from my gti. But since i fixed it after a long period, it is soo gorgeous. Cheers. Still good work and content!
@Masseffectinator5 жыл бұрын
And also i've researched common problem with the motor that you got. There are 3 main Problems that can occur on it: 1. Ignition switch. The switch wears out due to the turning of the key. As it gets warm, the car will shut of as the switch looses contact for like a millisecond. Engine dies randomly. 2. The Fuel Pump Relay. Gets warm, coil of the electric magnet overheats. As it gets hot it looses power to hold itself switched on. Engine dies of due to no Fuel. Also very rought restart after this. 3. Hallsensor (that you already have switched). Sensor is damaged or the whole assembly missaligned. Car runs like crap and the engine will shut of randomly. These are the 99% of common problems that this engine has. Hope i could give ya fresh ideas. Cheers Mrqbasic / Matthias
