This was a MK6 Golf GTI Multifunction Steering wheel retrofit in a MK5 Golf GTI for the purpose of being able to interact with all the menu options in the previously retrofitted MK6 Golf R instrument cluster and radio.
All buttons do work. I was demonstrating the functionality but didn't realize that copyrighted content was being played in the background through the radio, so that had to be censored near the end of the video.

That’s awesome that you did the cluster from a mk6 as well! I’m currently thinking about getting the mk6 wheel on my mk5 gti because I just got the same touch screen radio and I also have a polar fis data monitor so the issue I have is my arrow keys control my music and my data monitor so the new wheel will have more buttons to hopefully fix that!

Yes, what you are looking at is a MK6 Golf-R instrument cluster, but it has the 2010 MK5 Jetta bezel so it fits in the MK5 Golf dashboard for an OEM look (and can actually be mounted to the dashboard). Yes, The MK6 wheel with more buttons will operate the Polar FIS menu items (I use the Kufatec model). You meed to ensure you have the correct Revision "C" clockspring, and also steering wheel control module that supports both MK5 (DDP) and MK6 (BAP) protocols along with the matching steering angle sensor configuration. You will also need a VAG tool like OBDeleven ,VCDS, VCP, ODIS, Autel MS908 Pro (or higher) to do the coding the way you want to make all the buttons work. All 12 buttons on my wheel works. You get the real benefit from the steering wheel swap when you also do the cluster as well (althougth that to immobilizer work involved as well.

The problem is that the head unit would the newer BAP ( or even newer) protocol. Your MK5 stock instrument cluster would use the older DDP protocol. You would need to retrofit a matching variant of the instrument to be able to see the display.

@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 4 жыл бұрын
@@lewisrene7589 Personally, I feel you should be using the SAME cables that cables that came with the airbag and new wheel as they would come with the "additional" wires and pins that are needed. A non-MFSW wheel, clock-spring and steering-wheel control module has LESS pins / wires as there are less components (such as buttons). You can however, use a Revision-C clock spring with both (the non-MFSW just won't use all pins, and that's fine). If after all that, the airbag still gives a unclearable fault-code, check the grounding again, and ensure that none of the pins in the steering wheel control module are broken, missing, or bent (so as not to make proper contact).

Hello, fantastic video... I had a question. I have a 2005 MK5 GOLF and want to change the steering wheel to an MK6 (exactly like yours). Does the MK6 steering wheel have to have an MK6 control module or can I get an MK5? Thanks.
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 2 жыл бұрын
You have to get a MK5 (not MK6) module that does BOTH the MK5 DDP and MK6 BAP protocol. The specific one that you get is dependent on the specific module that you have in your car currently. This matters if your car is manual or DSG and has the steering angle sensor in the steering rack or steering column. If you give me your part number, I can look it up on the Ross-Tech wiki page and tell you the part number to get.

Hey does your gti have a steering angle sensor behind the clock spring? I’m doing this retrofit on my mkv Jetta with a wheel from a mkv tdi and I already have the mfd+ with a high line module but I’m also upgrading to the module with CD like you did. Will I be able to perform the steering assist and have no angle sensor codes if the car I pulled this from didn’t have a steering angle sensor?
@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 3 жыл бұрын
My highline GTI originally came with the steering angle sensor in the steering rack, but the rack died as was replaced with another model that did not have one. With the CD variant retrofit years later I selected "0" in adaptation channel "9" for module "44" to use only the steering angle sensor in the steering column itself.

@@MatthewTaylor3 awesome. Will I be able to use this in VCDS as well by switching to 0 in the adaptation Chanel 9? I just want to make sure that I will not have a red or yellow steering wheel light on the dash and what not. I ask because my steering angle sensor is behind the clock spring and plugs into the control module. I currently have the control module that ends in BK which was a high line model with software 0100/0101 LIN 1.3. You think I can retrofit to my existing high line BK module or will I need to use the CD one indefinitely? I see the CD also uses LIN 1.3 but software 0111. So I just want to know if VCDS will be able to code my retrofit properly. Thanks for the replies!

@MatthewTaylor3 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, You have the correct 1K0-953-549-CH module. The issue is that you bought a MK7 steering wheel that uses a completely new protocol. The MK5 Golf/Jetta uses DDP The MK6 Golf/Jetta uses BAP The 1K0-953-549-CH supports both of these protocols The MK7 wheel uses a different protocol. You will have to mix & match several MK7 modules to make this work. It will seem like it isn't worth the hassle, or it is easier to sell / exchange your MK7 steering wheel for a MK6 one. Give me a day to read through some forums. I recall seeing a MK5 forum (based in the United Kingdom ) in which someone retrofitted a MK7 steering wheel in a MK5 chassis, but no all the buttons worked (including the horn).

@MatthewTaylor3
@MatthewTaylor3 6 ай бұрын
You need what I listed or else the HORN and paddle shifter won't work. The MK5 uses the older DDP protocol. The MK6 uses the newer BAP protocol. The correct steering wheel control module speaks both protocols. You need to have a working horn for safety and road legal reasons. Importantly, you NEED to KNOW that the airbag WILL also deploy in the event of an accident.

If your steering wheel currently has NO buttons on it, then it means you have the LOWLINE steering wheel control module as well. You would need to buy the HIGHLINE steering wheel control module to make the replacement steering wheel work. You would select the appropriate one once you know if the your car has the steering angle sensor in the rack itself or the column. You would then need to recode the steering wheel control module in case there is somethng different about your car than the donor vehicle you get the steering wheel control module from.

I have an earlier video on that. This requires you to KNOW the PIN on both clusters. You will need to pair a new key (transponder) as your existing one will then become invalid.

Please look through my older videos to see the process. If you got a key with the replacement clock it is then easy. ... however you still need to copy the PIN, MAC, CS and Power Class from your existing ECU or cluster to the replacement. Do NOT delete any keys from the cluster, until you get the car started. I used a copy of AVDI to place both clusters in Service Mode and so the immobiliser swap and pairing of three new key

Coding is NEEDED. The specific coding is dependednt on the steering wheel control module (#16) you have installed, and you select the appropriate one BASED on the steering rack (module #44) you have installed (based on whether or not it has the steering angle sensor built in). You also need to have the "Revision-C" clockspring if you don't have it already in a 2007+ vehicle. Your steering wheel part number doesn't matter, but it would be nice to have the paddles if you have the DSG. The part number you identified is fine. The airbag harness looks good too. As it relates to the SCCM, I'll post the Ross-Tech Wiki list for you to look at. You FIRST need to know what SCCM you have in the car now to advise you which compatible MK6 SCCM to buy.

wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions Read this FIRST before buying the wrong module. Note your existing module via visual or electronic means, then select the compatinble MK6 one that does both 1.3 and 2.0 protocol communication (1.3 MK5, 2.0 MK6), steering angle sensor location. The hack I used to make the chart easier to read is to copy and paste it into Excel, then applied a filter to get the Highline MK6 module that matched my MK5 one.
